Yes, he is worse than Brayshaw, who is very good despite some of the comments one sees here.

Tyson can turn it over, but is a far more penetrating and damaging kick than De Goey.

I agree re Harmes, who I don't have as best 22 going into next year (unless he improves his kicking).

He's on a par with vandenBerg, but the latter plays a different role.

And why bring up a key defender ?  Compare like with like.  Do you really want a player with McDonald's kicking skills running around your midfield ?  Why on earth you'd bring up McDonald is beyond me.  That said, he's a better kick than McDonald.

De Goey is a poor kick under pressure.  Very poor.  We're building a midfield that renders De Goey unnecessary.

Sorry, but arguing the difference between De Goey and Brayshaw's field kicking is ridiculous.

Both make bad decisions at times and good ones at other times. Neither are elite kicks. And neither are terrible.

And actually his kicking penetration is as good as Tysons. He has a cannon of a right foot. It's a strength of his, I'm not sure how much of the guy you've watched. Not a lot obviously.

I brought up players who are as good/bad a kick as De Goey in our side.

Your post was a one-liner suggesting that the reason we shouldn't get him is because 'he can't kick'.

Which not only isn't true, but also ignores his strengths as a player.

Yeah there's a bit of talk about Steele to the Saints. I've been keen on a trade for both H-E and Tomlinson for a fair while, both would provide some things we need. I've come around to Stewart, mainly due to our need for a fwd/ruck and the uncertainty around Hogan. Reckon he could be a good fit in a forward line with Watts and Weed.

Tomlinson is an interesting one and may point to why we don't seem to get some of these so called young guns.

Last year he was approached by Carlton and St Kilda, we were not interested and didn't make an approach for whatever reason. My understanding is that's still the case unless we've changed our mind sometime over the last month.

The source is solid on this...

Venom Denom reporting De Goey from pies may be gettable.

Young talented mid. Probably will cost. Very unlikely to be a dee with no 1st rd picks

Can we offer Dawes, HL and Kennedy?

He is behind, Adams, Crisp, Sidebottom, Pendles, probably Aish and others and then Wells is rumoured to be coming.

I wonder if we could get something from the Lions for Dunn and Garland, which we could in some way upgrade to do a deal, or use a pick from next year to upgrade somehow.

He would complete our inside mids and I think he has a bit of pace. Not the best kick if I recall.

All obtained through offering way more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ than their current teams were.

That's generally how it works to get a player out of a certain club.

Yeah earlier in the year I was convinced we'd be doing a trade with GWS this year, we seem to have a good relationship with them, and I thought some kind of pick for 2 players deal could work for both teams (us for the depth and GWS for the slimming of their list), but there doesn't seem to be much noise around anything between the 2 clubs.

We'd surely be sounding out Hoskin-Elliot though wouldn't we? I'd be happy with a package of him and either one of Tomlinson or Stewart.

Virtually every time I see De Goey kicking he butchers it.  Why do you think he gets dtopped ?

I'm happy to disagree on Brayshaw.  He has lovely foot skills on both sides of his body.  Obviously young players make mistakes as they get accustomed to the tempo of AFL footy.  And yes, the same could be said of De Goey, but my eyes tell me Brayshaw is a vastly better skilled player.

ButI have better things to do than argue about a fringe Collingwood player.

I'll end up sounding like Stuie.

Sounds good to me Redleg

I'm just passing on Trade Rumors - or am I doing it wrong :)

But in all seriousness I can't see it happening.....

I have read somewhere that he is looking at buying a house in Melbourne, might be an investment but something anyway

I'm going to take that as a certain he's moving here, but I'm also going to take Hogan's Perth property as merely an investment... ;)

Nice cherry picking.  The players I mentioned - Whiley, Jaksch and Liam Jones, have been at Carlton for a few years.  You cherry picked Melksham and Kennedy, who have been at the club for 1 year and deserve a little more time, while Lumumba has been struck down by concussion issues (and even then, his few games this year far surpassed anything the three I mentioned did this year).  I'll give you Dawes.

And who says we had to do a lot of work to get these players?

Ironic, isn't it Wise?

And if he is, it's so marginal it'd be pointless to argue.

All of those names miss targets, like De Goey.

And none of them are elite kicks.

Which is exactly why we can't recruit another one who is an average kick.  Guys with some class and polish are who we should be targeting

Kennedy? Dawes? Lumumba? Melksham? None of those have "fared far, far better" (for varying reasons).

I think where we're all differing is the definition of what a "destination club" is. I see it as a club that has to do very little to attract players to nominate them as their preferred destination. I don't think we're quite at that stage yet. We're still having to work hard on convincing players to come to us. We're heading in the right direction in this regard clearly, but as per the original post, I totally disagree we are the 3rd most attractive club in the league.

We are no way the third most attractive club in the league of or Victoria for the matter.

Mid say we are in the bottom four or five.

When is the last time a quality player came out and said "I want to go to Melbourne".  We convinced Mitch Clarke by offering him a stupid contract. Jeff White was another. He was a 20 year old and was the highest paid player at the club which caused lots of issues amongst the playing group at the time.

Outside of a ruckman/fwd-ruck we should only be considering players who are locks for our best 22.  We have enough depth players.

Not 100% sure on that. We had a very lucky run with injuries this year, and bringing in players who are better than those leaving improves us significantly. Most of Terlich, Grimes, Michie, Newton, Garland, Dunn, Dawes, Pedersen, King and Jones look like they're gone. Pretty hard to replace that many with best 22 players. Let's also remember the likes of Oliver, Brayshaw, Weideman and possibly Trengove will all be in our best 25 or so despite not playing most of the games this year.

There's still a lot of improvement to be done with our depth.

Probably the best place to put this...

Paul Connors attended the Old Xav's Golf Day on Monday and was the after dinner guest speaker.  My Brother attended.

He manages 88 players and was happy to have a post-talk 'question and answer' time.

At one stage he asked if there were any Melbourne supporters in the room ?  It was his initiative and the only club he did it for.  It's fair to say he was glowing at the prospects for the club over the next 5 years.  He said they were "fantastic" and that supporters were going to have an immense amount of joy.  He also said the players love Goodwin, that he'll be a great coach and that Roos was leaving at the "perfect" time.  As I said, he brought Melbourne up.

He doesn't manage Hogan, but nonetheless offered an opinion.  He said "Hogan will stay at the Dees".  Obviously it's just his opinion, but he was very confident in delivery.  Obviously it's a relatively small industry and player managers and officials regularly have talks, coffees, etc.

He personally barracks for Richmond and said they're stuffed.  He said Deledio is on $800K and the club wants to free up cap space so would off load him if they could.  This is where the talk has come from.  At his age with his recent soft tissue injuries that's easier said than done.

No great revelations, but nice to hear...

Awesome ProDee. Love it.

As for Deludio wouldn't touch him.

Agree with Richmond being stuffed.

Malthouse has been quoted about managers a few times recently. Says there are some good ones but some rogues who he has no time for.

Connors to me seems one of the good ones, he has the players interest at heart but seems to understand how important the synergy with the club is.

Agree we need a ruck forward. It's obvious we can't carry Gawn and another pure ruck in the same 22.

Hence my interest in Vickery.

Vardy maybe.

Witts is basically in upgrade in Spencer.

Thanks ProDee

Love this sort of info especially if it talks us up haha. But in all seriousness little snippets from player managers are way more bankable then whispers from the media

Thanks again ProDee - it's why I keep reading this site

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
