So? What do think will be our strategy and outcome?

forward stocks look good if Hogan stays with Weed and the Hulk ready to step up. I think we will keep Pedo around as he can cover, not just forward and ruck, but can also go back and do a reasonable job.

Indefence we have the Big Macs and Frost with Frost and OMac with a lot of upside and development. Melksem to debut for us and with others to cover down there and one of Dunn or Garland hanging around I can see we need a couple of fillers in there. Hibbard ahead of Hurley for me as I think we can cover the key positions in the back half.

Mdfield is looking good with talent and depth. Late picks for speculation. The talent spotters have a good record with later picks. Trust them.

in the ruck we have the best with Max. Spencer is adequate but we will need to look to the future and draft a couple of prospects. Let Max mentor them.

summary; Dawes out the door. Look to natural development of the young brigade to step up with Pedo covering in short term. Hibbard and Milkshake to bolster the defence with the possibility of a bigger, more mature body coming in. Put work into selecting and developing a young ruck and look,to,natural development of the mids.

Dawes, Garland, Lumumba and Grimes to retire/be traded of the older brigade and Wagner to be upgrade off the rookie list.

Trade or whatever for Hibberd and look for a value for money trade to fill holes or, if an elite player is available and wants to come to us chase hard.

in the draft, upgrade Wagner, look for ruck prospects and speculate for the midfield.

Got a feeling Goodwin may try to put his stamp on the side, and there could be a surprising amount of movement amongst our fringe dwelling players.

I'd like to keep him, but I can see Trengove being moved. Grimes gone for sure. Newton, Garland or Dunn maybe. JKH. Wouldn't be surprised to see ANB be dangled to Essendon for Hibberd.

We have little currency in terms of picks, so it will have to be players.

You may well be right but I'd be very disappointed if we traded ANB.

can't see them trading ANB - too much potential in my opinion. i'd rather not get hibberd than lose him. we need depth in the midfield and ANB gives us that. just hope he works on kicking a few goals to add that extra dimension.. surely our second rd pick would be enough for hibberd. especially considering the dodgy circumstances that bring about his leaving. can't see us getting hurley. too many dons might spoil the broth! still be nice to get a top flight mid (tom mitchell, prestia, brad crouch, etc)..

however, it's the first year that i haven't been too concerned with filling gaps. we have a side that can beat hawthorn and nearly beat roos, crows... just need to get games into the youth and snag a solid player or two i reckon.

Agree, I'd be reticent to let ANB go at this stage, but he's not getting much of a chance at AFL level so may want to move on himself.

He hasn't performed particularly well this year when given a chance, and next season will have to add Melksham to one he is competing with for spot in the 22.

If ANB got the deal done for Hibberd I'd take it and run. Can't see ANB making it as a star. Might make B grade, but nothing more on what I've seen at VFL and AFL level so far. Not sure he has enough weapons for the big time.

I'd also look at seeing what is available for Salem. Of course, would love to keep him and unless it's a Brad Crouch type (yes, I know, he's re-signed) I wouldn't do the deal, but Salem would have currency, but isn't absolutely vital for our midfield at the moment. Equally, he may become that important Hawthorn-type left-footer on the outside, with an ability to play on the inside. I guess I am just spitballing, but I want to continue to improve our midfield and Salem may not make it back and is injury-prone.

Good OP too.

Exactly it.  Im a ANB fan but I can't see him reaching potential highs that many others could reach.  Also he had currency.  I like the kid but if he was on the table for a best 22 player I wouldn't think twice in sending him on his way

If Goodwin was coming in from outside I could see him wanting to reshape or adjust the list to his own liking. Given that he has been Roos right hand for a couple of seasons I don't see a bigg change being made in the list.

I think that we will not move both Grimes and Trengove. Strong possibility of one being moved on but not both. We only have to look back at recent history to see the effects of forcing out long time clubmen.

Nah, can't be having that. Salem is untouchable for mine. Just adds so much.

I am not a Hibberd fan,if we could get Caleb Marchbank from Gws and somehow palm off ANB maybe with the use of a BRisbane trade plus steak knives would be great. With the Drug cheats returning to EFC and the current available players someone(S) are likely to miss out.

Wow, ANB is overrated. He's never shown any ability to win contested ball at AFL level and yet people seem to think it'll click for him. I know he's young, but I can't see him coming along far enough to be a valuable contributor to our midfield long-term. And he's not quick enough or damaging enough to play forward. If he does have trade currency, let's bank it and move on.

Yep. As vanilla as they get. All of our mids have an outstanding attribute or tricks. ANB doesn't. Unless VFL accumulator is a trick. Would trade.

Watch him get BOG tomorrow now.

Even against poor opposition, at least that would show us some glimmer. Because as I say, I've seen nothing.

I think ANB can be our Tom Mitchell type. same development cycle.  hard work.

DV8 If you(referring to footy players) are prepared to work yo ars. off normally it will pay dividends. ANB should realise that others are likely to overtake him unless…….. or perhaps he has reached his optimum output and will remain to be a champion VFL player.

Good summary. Would like to see a second quality ruck that would allow gawn more time at FF if needed or at back in an emergency. Gawn is very dangerous up forward but gets worked to death. Hope they keep Dunn but I'm not sure they will. Most likely hold onto Garland.

Pedo is still very useful.

Midfield looks exciting.

I'll predict that St Kilda's game plan, after looking at it intently today, again, is the most one dimensional Game Plan in the AFL and VFL for that matter.

Will draft late for a ruck or will trade for an underperforming ruck that Goodwin thinks he can improve. Hardly an earth shattering prediction.

Also hope we are into a player or two from GWS. Hoskin Elliott, Marchbank or Tomlinson

Any chance Tomlinson could be used as a mobile backup ruckman?

Doesn't seem to be an effective KPP, but covers a fair bit of ground.

Possibly Mach5. He was recently used as a tall midfielder for a number of weeks in the NEAFL and racked up big numbers consistantly. Over 50 disp in one game.  But thats the NEAFL. He has ability, but where his best place is I do not know. l believe he could be the type of project player that Goodwin could improve.

We'll land Hibberd

Make a play for O'Meara and failing him i can see a left field attempt at Paul Ahern from GWS

Will also seek a back up ruck with the ability to play forward eg Zac Clarke, Nathan Vardy.

Guaranteed to leave the club: Grimes, Terlich, Max King, Michie

50/50 stay or go via trade, delist or retire: Trengove, Dawes, Pedersen, Dunn, Garland, Lumumba, Newton, Neal-Bullen, Matt Jones, JKH

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
