What a player at his best, both forward and back. He played tall and as we know tough. His presence was immense both for his teammates and the enemy. I suspect his literary quotes to his opponents would have been short and not so sweet. Makes some of the tough guys today look like marshmallows including one of our own.

Still remember vividly his efforts in the otherwise disastrous 1988 GF - 'balls' never stopped trying and although ultimately overwhelmed, was one of the very few that could hold his head high after a rather dispiriting 96 point flogging.

Talented but genuinely tough - a very rare combination in the current era.

Mike of course takes the chance to milk the melodrama as much as he can. I'm sure the brick through the supermarket window as well as the king hit on Terry Wallace will get a decent airing. Mike will of course finish the interview as though he was has just finished talking to John Hinckley Jr.  (as he does with any guest that seems vaguely controversial).

I'd like to see the Wallace hit video again. I have a recollection that Grinter got ball first and his fist deflected into Wallace's face. Curious to see if my memory is playing tricks.

I saw Grinter at a party that night. His hand was swollen like a balloon. I think he missed more games from infection that TW did with the broken jaw.

A very talented and whole-hearted player was Balls.

Was there that day on the outer wing at the Western Oval and can confirm that he either snicked or just missed the ball. This is not seen in the video replay a fact that Grinter likes to point out to anyone that listens.

I also saw him at a party that night. Party was at another players place.

I do remember his swollen hand and him looking really dejected.

Grinter was my favourite player of the Northey era

Sensing Grinter's closing footsteps Wallace shat himself and fumbled the ball. The ball was bobbling about six inches away from Wallace's face. Unfortunately the ball moved as Grinter swung his arm to punch it away. Anyway that's the way I saw it.

Remember him speaking at a sportsman night a number of years ago.  He was asked from the floor if he regretted the 'Wallace' incident.  His answer was, my only regret is that I should have hit him harder.

Apparently 'Hollywood' Wallace wasn't the most popular bloke going around, even among his own team mates.

A lot of the umpires just didn't understand Rod. 

They made some poor decisions based purely on guys rolling around with broken bones and internal bruising because they had stepped into the wrong part of the ground.

A lot of people calling him a thug are way off.

He was more like  an assassin .

The crack of Bone and Teeth was quite audible from over the fence

Wearing a Melbourne scarf became quite a dangerous prospect after that moment. 

I thank "Balls" for that. 

After the win i was expecting my car to be a burnt out shell on Dynon Rd...Alas the Club Song was pumped through a very fat Pre Amp. Windows down

It is fascinating the perception of him from the outside. I can vividly remember him being one of our most skilful players at his prime. He was an incredible mark for his size too.

I could live without seeing the 87 prelim again though. Ever.
