The game is in Alice Springs. 

Playing two rucks always looks good on paper. And then on game day, the lack of pressure on the ball becomes obvious.

There are multiple ways of stopping that. Pressure from our forwards as you say. But also smarter entry going forward.

North Melbourne have the tallest forward-line going around and seem to be going okay. West Coast the same.

It's about the quality of ball coming in as much as anything. If it's poor, then yes their runners will bring it straight out and it'll be problematic.

The message I'm pushing is that the inclusion of Spencer to the side would mean they'd likely have to change their current set-up of talls. Which could work to our favour if we capitalize through the midfield.

It's clear Hogan is more difficult to match up on when roaming further up the field. He is too easily double teamed when he plays from the goal-square.

Gawn sitting at FF would be a nightmare for them and it'd also allow Watts to get off the leash and hit the scoreboard.

It works for NM because Waite and Petrie are both good at applying pressure. Our forward line includes Watts and Hogan, who are both below average.

I do not know if bringing Spencer in will work or not but as soon as i heard the idea, and thinking about Max's form, i thought this was a great solution.

How about for Sydney, Geelong and West Coast?

Whether or not it would work would come down to more than two key forwards being able to apply 'good pressure' off the ball, but of course pressure off the ball from all players helps.

Let's see what transpires.

We are the third highest scoring side in the comp. Why would we want to mess with the balance of the forward line?

If Gawn needs a rest (which I think he does) he should be rested.

So many factors go into picking a team on a week to week basis (these days) ...

• The 'rest' factor (especially with the younger players)
• Getting game time into the inexperienced players
• Needing more experienced players against certain teams.
• Do we work best with a tall forward line and/or a tall backline (as per the opposition team match-ups)
• With the zone that we're employing, do certain players suit more than others.
• Do we play a straight tagger if needed (Bugg can play that role but always?)
• Some in form decent player might miss out simply because we can't find a role for him or there simply isn't a spot.
• Selection based on targeting winnable games whilst experimenting in the tougher games (or vice-versa)
• Breeding confidence by giving certain players a block of games
• Making sure the team picked will gel together (same for the teams within the team - backline, forward line etc)
• Getting the structures right as per the opposition.
• Being more cautious with injuries and concussions
• Form (whether that form (or lack of form) is being displayed in the seniors or the reserves)
• Injuries or "the mystery illness/injury of the week"
• And there is often a selection based on a bit of x-factor

As much as some players will miss out from time to time or for a time, they will all get their chance if their form warrants it ... and sometimes a player will get opportunities just to see how they might go or how they might fit in - the match committee occasionally promoting players on spec is something that most or many MC's will do.

So, it's harder than it's ever been to pick a team from week to week (for us onlookers) ...

I've got Tyson & Jetta in as the only absolutes but we might make up to 5 changes (from a team that won by 63 points) ... as for who goes out, I'll defer to the above criteria

 

Footnote:  years ago the odd 'enforcer' or 2 would warrant selection.

Paul Roos was quoted in the Herald Sun as suggesting he was confident of "putting three or four guys in and leaving three or four out". That thinking would be based on the fact that a few were left out of last week's team who could easily come in after a six day break and presumably also to assist with load issues following the interstate trip to Alice Springs.We've never handled the situation well in the past and it's good to see that we're in a position at last to make some adjustments of this sort.

I'm looking forward to team selection in the next couple of weeks.

If you are dropped for a rest this week WJ you really get a rest as there is no Casey game.

That might play in Trengove's favour.

If  we do not play him this week he does get another game to show his wears again till 4th June.

To be honest It would not worry me after two years off what is another two weeks?

always seem to beat them in the pre-season but when it comes to the real thing we only come close.

Port appear to have conceded the ruck, as they have a genuine back-up ruckman but aren't naming him. They're roving to the opposition ruckmen, and doing it pretty well based on hit-outs and clearances from the West Coast game. I think there's definitely an argument to play Spencer and make sure there is domination in the ruck, and change our setup slightly to give our rucks the option of just smashing the ball forward (I'm going to call it the reverse diamond ). At least start the game like that to put doubt in their minds. The other thing it does, if they're both smashing into Trengove (especially Spence) it will make him less effective around the ground.

The extra ruck resting forward might force them into moving Westhoff back as well.

Jetta stops Wingard, Bugg gets into Gray, can TMac handle Dixon??????

Edit:- The point is not how gentle it was, the point is did he trip him or not? If he tripped him it is a reportable offence.
