He's been a consistent defender for 2+ years. Just because he's been dropped now doesn't mean he doesn't have any attributes. He's been commended after plenty of games under Roos. I would've only taken Garland over Dunn 3 years ago

How many games has he been commended on this year? Look at the defensive set up and attacking style we are playing now. Does he have the attributes to play it? The times they are a changin'

Not bagging Dunn (as he has been a fantastic servant of the club) nor saying Garland is the answer (as neither are) but you need to look at where he fits with what we are trying to do now.

Garland v Dunn is the latest circular debate assuming the mantle previously occupied by Dawes v Pedo.

Neither are stars but if Roos is true to his word on one poor game being enough to see you out of the side and form in the seconds being rewarded, Garland is pretty lucky to escape the chop this week, and conversely, Dunn could consider himself unlucky.

i don't abide by a theory that Dunn can't play in a zone setup. I think sometimes we pay players too little credit. There must be more to it that we don't necessarily know.

Pederson is out for illness, that surely means he will out for 6-8 weeks won't it !!! . Matt Jones soreness has lasted a long time, perhaps a record for this injury. Based on the round 6 injury report he is available but still not available for any games, why is that so?The club loves to bull sh.t a lot. This is one ara ROOS hasn't changed.

Not sure why so much pessimism. I like the changes. In fact I believe not enough changes have been made in past games. ANB gives us another ball getter/winner. Kent gives us more speed/pressure/goal scoring. OMac is the future and has to be given game time at the highest level and is less raw than his first AFL experience.

We are still learning and developing. That is what this year is about. Next year we demand finals. Tomorrow I trust our structures will deliver a comfortable win. Go Dees!

Not sure if it has been said but I was impressed by Michie at half back last week with his ability to get back and take a few good intercept marks. This is something I have not seen Salem do very well previously and could be the reason why he was dropped.

I don't mind the selections but can't see any player on the list capable of giving Maxy a chop out. Will be interesting.

I might be wrong, but I think you'll find that Matt Jones was out for a rib injury.

Pedersen going out of the side worries me more than it should, especially given we haven't brought in anyone who plays his role.

Tom McDonald at CHF might be the solution the FD is going with but I don't like it. The more so given Brisbane's playing two ruckmen.

We should have more than enough talent across the park but I can't shake a nagging feeling that we've picked a weaker side than we could have.

Very unbalanced team. I can't understand what they think they are doing. Brisbane is that bad it shouldn't matter, but ffs a lot of bad ball users off the backline and potentially a lot of players in the forward line who will get in each other's way.

Vince will play back along with Wagner and Hunt who can all use the ball

Final changes.

Kent Anb Omac for Salem Jetta Pedersen..

Emergency Newton Grimes Dunn

Another baffling selection..

No second / back up ruck.  Whilst many bag Pedersen he does the job.

Does anyone have any info re his "illness"?

Do not under any circumstances like going in with Just Max as Ruck.

Too many variables

1 If he goes down we haven't got a replacement( and don't give me Tommy Mac, O mac OR gasp Jack Watts

2 Read the above, fraught with danger!! Who lends a chop out.??

Crap selection could have blooded Hullet or even Spencil!

Don't like just going in with Max at all!

That's great.  So why isn't he playing?

And just in case Steve or Curry or whoever fly in from the night, I'm not defending Garland, merely arguing that Dunn in for Garland makes no difference.

Dunn competes, Garland doesn't.  That's the difference.

Pedersen has been pretty good, I don't get the bagging.  He's not a superstar but I think he gets the best out of himself.  He won't drag us over the line but if we're playing well he plays his role.

No disrespect to you, Doc, but a post like this is utter rubbish.  If Garland didn't actually compete then he wouldn't play.  It's plain and simple, and it's ridiculous to suggest that he doesn't.  You can knock him for other stuff, but to suggest he doesn't compete in games is pretty poor and incorrect.

Seven's promo for the game: "In Queensland, the Lions play the Demons at 1"

Made to sound extra stupid being read out by Basil Zemplas.

Who checks these things before they go to air? A monkey? A monkey on the sauce? How do you get where the game is being [censored] played wrong?

I think they mean for viewers in Queensland, they will see the Mel v BL game.

If a kick is not to the advantage of a fisrward and the defender is able to make a basic 'spoil', who is given the plauditsit

The defender? If you believe so, I think you're completely overrating a basic skill that all defenders are expected to execute under those circumstances. All defenders are expected to 'spoil' a ball in that situation at the very least.

I didn't go the game last week. But I did watch the replay and after reading comments about Garland on demonland, I was expecting the worst. Surprisingly however, I didn't think it was a horrible game from him. But it was very much a 'Garland' game. The same story which I've been preaching for a long time. He just floats. Hangs off his opponent. Literally. (Which is evidenced by free kicks against). And provides little to any offensive play. (As evidenced by his 35 metre vertical kicks into the air as well as his blaze away kicking when under any sort of pressure).

We will get better when we find upgrades to these kinds of players.

The modern game demands a fairly neutral outcome from defenders when we dont have the ball and then creating run/carry/space and accurate execution when we get It.

If you could marry Dunn/Garland with the likes of H (or a more dangerous HB offensively like a Burgoyne) then we are talking seriously potent backs a la Gibson. The trouble Is we dont and finding/developing such well polished but damaging (offensively) defenders Isn't so easy.

I suspect this Is why our "one sided" (Ie; quite good at defending or attacking/disposal but not solid with both) defenders are constantly being dropped/selected and will no doubt continue unless others eventually step up and provide the right balance.

P.S. Jetta is probably our only consistent example of at least one defender who is solid on both sides much of the time (and slowly improving)

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
