Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

How does a club like Hawthorn who's won the past three premierships and has over 70,000 members only get 45,000 people to a Friday night game?

I know a lot of Hawthorn fans and I have a strong belief that many of their supporters are "fake".

They've signed up because it's "in" - Hawthorn is a winning side, it's "fun" watching them play and being associated with them.

But they're not real supporters. They don't actually go to games, they don't dedicate themselves.

If Hawthorn stops winning their membership will fall to a truer number of around 50,000.

As for the game, that was a borderline holding the ball on Smith (IMO he elected to ride the tackle (i.e. prior opportunity) and then dropped it), but the bigger issue for Adelaide was Jenkins' kick just before - he had Walker running towards goal but elected a ridiculous left-foot snap which went straight up in the air and wasted 4 or 5 seconds waiting for it to come back down.

He attempted to dispose of the ball by intentionally handballing thin air to give the impression he was trying. He knew exactly what he was doing, no different to when players pretend to handball it away when they're wrapped up in a tackle on the ground.

Hawthorn and St Kilda have both wrecked my footy tipping record over the last fortnight, as both weeks I picked St Kilda to win and the Hawks to lose. Close but no cigar!

I watched Tom Papley play a few times as 23rd player for the Scorpions last year. He was mainly used in a forward goal sneak role and played well in every game. I didn't see him as a midfielder and he has certainly kicked on with the Swans where he was rookie listed at the end of last year.

Half time today - he has 15 disposals, a goal and 85 DT points.

Another one who got away.

I think a lot of clubs are like that to be honest.

I don't really believe we only have 36000 supporters, if we were winning every week like Hawthorn I reckon a lot of people will come out of the woodwork and we'd have a membership base in excess of 50,000.

just to show how much stats can sometimes lie.

swans won 12 16 88 to eagles 7 7 49 - twice as many scoring shots and 39 point margin. yet stats show a very even situation

edit: missing eagles hit outs and interchanges are 41 and 87

The same way we only got 28,000 to GWS when we have almost 10,000 more members. When you've got 70,000 members, it's fair to say the truer indication of the die hards are 40,000ish.

Am I the only one that thinks West Coast look ordinary against the 2016 brand of football? Quick ball movement combined with contested possessions. I reckon they're very gettable this year when we play them. Bring our A game and we can knock them off.

They've beaten Brisbane, Fremantle and Richmond. With those wins and losses to Hawthorn and Sydney looks like they're back to their flat track bully best.

No it's not.

No prior opportunity and he attempted to dispose of the ball.

What?!! He clearly grabbed the ball to his chest making token punching actions to it well before anyone tackled him. Wstch the front on vision to Smith. His intent was to keep the ball in his hands and stall the flow of play, not to dispose of it. As Carey said, holding the ball every day of the week (except Friday night, it would appear)

This was a Friday night game against a genuine premiership opposition.

Pathetic from Hawthorn.

I wouldn't call it pathetic, but it does show there are a lot of casual supporters in amongst those 70,000 members. 45,000 is still a pretty good effort against an interstate side. Mind you, Adelaide have a lot of support here. They tend to get about 15,000 along to games in Melbourne. So when you take that into consideration, Hawthorn would have been hoping for a few more.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
