We should be ready for this frequent tactic of Martin. It gives him extra time to choose the best option for disposal, which he does excellently.

I work with a martial arts expert, and I asked him about this. He says that the mistake people make when confronted with a push away is that they push back. The better response is to pull back, using the momentum of his push, to pull  him off balance.

Perhaps another approach would be to make a concerted effort to grab that outstretched hand and not let go. He'd then be in the difficult position of not being able to handball.

Whatever they decide to do , they should be ready for Martin to push them in the face when he's tackled.His effectiveness would be greatly nullified if they could somehow counteract it.

    pulling requires getting a grip.  Easier to duck a bit.

    Corralling not tackling also allows the opponent to consider his options and dispose of the footy but it seems I'm the only one who doesn't like it.

    Slap the arm away and continue on into the body. Or if not at full pace, grab his wrist with both hands and yank towards and downwards to you as hard as possible.

    There's a reason Martin's been able to do it effectively for six years, he has a combination of size, strength, balance and perfect timing. It's pretty hard to argue with a don't argue when it's done properly. That's one of the reasons why I rate Viney's tackle as the best I've ever seen.

    He is strong in the legs and the "don't argue" probably came from his NZ heritage as it is a Rugby tactic.

    If we stick the first tackle and the second tackler arrives quickly we will get him for holding the ball ,which he does a bit.

    We need to tackle with intent as we have for two weeks.

    Missed easy tackles should never be tolerated.

    fortunately he hasn't been racking up big numbers this year. i suggest all the players talk to him with a kiwi accent to confuse him

    If he puts the arm out of the don't argue - he is open for a shirt front. That is one option. I would look to lay him out early (take the 3 weeks, he won't do it again when playing Melbourne, so good long term problem solver). The other option is to come in from the opposite side and either ambush him with the tackle, or pick pocket the ball out of his hands (Garlett/Oliver/Kent would all be capable of that). He is a great player though is Martin, a really tough competitor, and a true leader.

    There's a move you can use when an idiot grabs the front of your shirt trying to look tough that would be perfect for this situation as it turns it into an arm lock in your favour.  I'm sure the club could find a martial arts instructor who would be happy to work out a safe and AFL-friendly version to teach the team.

    Try swinging your arm up rapidly under the elbow = high tackle and a very sore elbow/arm.

    Hope he tries to fend off Gawn.. And is subsequently ends up dislocating his shoulder!

    Gawn would still be able to tackle him with those Inspector Gadget arms even with a don't argue.

    Firstly he must get the ball, no point fending off when you don't have it. And Gawnny wouldn't let him have it.

    That's where Viney's technique was so good. Instead of trying to push the don't-argue aside and grab the body, which is impossible and is what the other player expects you to do, he grabbed Weller's don't-argue arm above the elbow. As soon as he did that, there was nothing Weller could do, it was only going to end one way. Viney used the arm to pull him in and then smash him to the ground. It's obviously something he's practised, though doing it at full pace is amazing.

      From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

      Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

    • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

      The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
