Hate putting up a slightly negative topic after such a good win but it's been bothering me for a while, i don't believe Salem is working at half back.

in his first year playing across half forward we saw an extremely creative and dangerous young playing with great skills and goal sense, now while he has transferred some of those attributes across half back, i just feel he's playing well below what he's capable in an attacking sense and he's not a great defender and opposition teams know it.

I understand the importance of good ball users in defense and how important that is to our ball movement and game plan but i really think it's time to get Christian up the ground a bit more and let Wagner and go take up the mantle, Jesse loves when Jack watts delivers the ball to him, imagine having both Watts and Salem doing that on a regular basis.

thoughts?

I cannot wait for the day that he moves onto a wing permanently or rotates between half forward and the midfield. I had hoped that with Vince back there that would allow Salem to be released into the midfield, but he probably doesn't have the fitness or trust in his body yet to play a midfield role. And as a team, we probably don't have enough depth across half back to have the luxury of playing him there either at the moment. Perhaps, later this season or early 2017 we'll see Salem injected into the midfield?

Don't remember asking you for your explanation or your opinion of an unrelated player, not matter how much you want to give it, again.

You'll get what you're given and be thankful I'm trying to make you a smarter person.  If you weren't so thick it wouldn't have needed explaining.

Oh please... He did what thousand other footballers do and slipped over while trying to give a decent chass.

Disagree. I reckon Salem has the potential to be an absolute gun, but there's no getting around it. That was a poor effort. He went to ground, because the tackle or the intent to tackle wasn't strong enough.

Again, not interested in your opinions, on anything. I know that's baffling to you, but maybe have a sit and think.

Yeah he will be a gun and I feel it wasnt so much a lack of intent more he just panicked tried to tackle because he thought  Varcoe was gonna get out, went too early and missed. But are people really geting into him over that? He hasnt stared but hasnt been bad by any means

I don't even know if that's what Old meant. But he'll run with it now.

Fortunately for us we have "ProDee" here to give his opinions and explanations on everything, whether it's asked for or not...

It is fortunate, ProDee is one of the better posters going round.

He is reliable and steady, part of a defence which is building nicely and does not require to much change at the moment

Just as long as he 'keeps his feet', as all footballers are instructed to do.

He's played less than 30 games and he will learn, and he isn't Robinson Crusoe in doing this.

He's saying that he rates Salem so highly he "pictures" him as being capable of representing Melbourne on GF day, but wouldn't want those types of errors on such a big and important stage.

He wouldn't say the same thing about Matt Jones, because he wouldn't "picture" a player like Jones getting to GF day.

And while we're on that theme I was very disappointed N.Jones missed the captain's goal sealer too.

He's slotted those in the past to be fair. I was actually shocked that he missed it.

35m out directly in front. He should have kicked it. I thought he'd nail it too, because he has become a good clutch goal kicker. Suspect he probably thought we were safe. :P

I got lots of love for the captain but I thought he had a real mixed bag on the Sunday - lots of good stuff but uncharacteristically quite a bit of not so good - the missed goal which he would nail 9 times out of 10 ( that shot must have been the 1 out of 10) and quite a few handballs to the opposition.

The short pass to Brayshaw coming out of the goal square was a gem though and some really nice clearances.

Salem is a player we don't have to be concerned about. He is class.

The one area that concerns me, is his pace. He is not quick, but has a lethal left foot and is not a dumb footballer. Jesse must love seeing him with footy in hand.

Good thing we just signed on a three year contract last year.

Having Garland as depth doesn't bother me too much. Think his best shot would be to reinvent himself as a forward given we now have Oscar, Wagner & White all gunning for his spot and Melksham to join the list next year.

As for Salem, i'm not concerned. Think he's being allowed to develop his game nicely. In a few years time (post Vince & Jones) we will see him spending big minutes in the midfield with the likes of Viney, Oliver, Petracca, Brayshaw, Tyson etc...

Then he'd only have to compete with Hogan, Watts, Weed, Frost, Pedersen & Dawes.... ;)

Not setting the world on fire, but his 15 kicks are like some else's 25

Id like to see him him further up the ground and could develop into a Burgoyne type.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
