Mitch King out for year with ruptured ACL

Scans confirm Melbourne Football Club ruckman Mitch King will miss the rest of the year with a ruptured ACL.

Shattered for the kid, thats 3 years in a row a first year player has been put out for the whole year. They tend to be all about education so hopefully he can spend some extra time watching Gawny ruck live. Could be good for his development further down the road.

Very sad for him, all the best for his recovery. Once he's up and running I doubt Petracca will take him for some bare foot basketball!  (A bit of lightness in a sad conversation)

Is it better or worse that it's the same knee?

Hopefully he can feel a bit secure knowing he's a young player and a long term prospect, and can spend the year getting his game knowledge up.

Poor kid. Hugely rated by Jason Taylor and his team. The bushies staff have a glowing endorsement of this kid.

While its rotten luck its the perfect opportunity for him to add size to his frame and re build his body. He is an intelligent footballer so i have no doubt his development will only be fast tracked.

Paul Roos is on record on saying That Hogan missing the whole year fast tracked his development because he was able to do alot of educational work, watching the power forwards and analysing their leading patterns etc.. He was also able to build his body up. Said the exact same thing with Petracca. 

King will now be able to sit down and go to live games and study the likes of Goldstien Gawn Naitanui and how they go about. They will put him through educational sessions and maybe do bit of recruiting work like they did with Track.. All while he will still be able to build his body without being thrown into the wolfs at VFL because of our genuine lack of ruckman thats available.

If it is the same knee it is worse. It could do more damage if the knee 'pops' out frequently. It can damage the meniscus and cartilage can float around the area. The meniscus is the cartilage between the femur and tibia. If it has damaged the meniscus, the knee won't seat properly, the knee would essentially be bone on bone if it is torn that badly and can cause pain and further issues

Also, if he has had it done before and has taken 2 hamstrings from that leg and LARS is not an option (usually because it is badly damaged a la Bob Murphy), he will need to take 2 hamstrings from the opposite leg which can make the hamstrings weaker leaving 6 hamstrings on each leg. The hamstrings are twice as long as an ACL so they double them over and they are actually up to 40% stronger than a regular ACL.

I don't think there's that much difference between same knee and the other knee, it all comes down to individual circumstances.

If it were the other knee he'd potentially have 2 dodgy knees going forward which obviously isn't an ideal result. 

If there isn't too much associated damage and they can fix this one well then it's probably a better result. 

At least he got a preseason in of skill development and learning about AFL footy and now he can do a lot of gym work. 

I'm not buying the 'it's better to have a year out with a knee' theory, but for an 18 year old ruckman game and training development is only so beneficial and physical development is a massive part of it. I've often thought about 15 games at any level might be enough and they should spend longer doing skills and time in the gym.

It's the same side.  Gawn had two Acl's same side - so there is hope.   I have huge sympathy for the kid - I am 4 months post ACL reco and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.  The recovery is long slow and painful (although I don't have physio on tap like professional athletes do).
