Come to think of it, why isn't the state government providing this service to alleviate the road congestion. Cheaper than new roads I'm sure.

Please  readers  put  yourselves  in  somebodies  place  after  a  30000 people  game  and  try   fitting  on  a  Frankston  train,  please  breathe  in  and  hold  it  till  you  get  to  Caulfield.

    Edit  PS  Put  the  new  stadium  at  Sandown  Park  on  the  vacant  land  on  the  western  side  of  the  track. 

Not sure that is true. It is true that the proposed new line from the south-east will not go to Richmond, and will go to Domain and then CBD South, which will be right next to Flinders Street. So get the train to CBD South, and then it is easy to walk to the MCG, or to get an outbound train to Richmond. Reverse this process to get home. Simples!

Couldn't think of anything more stupid than for this city to have both football stadiums right next to each other.

What do you do when they are used at the same time, or one after each other? Having Etihad on the other side of the city makes it much easier to handle.

there is not one AFL ground east of  PuntRd-Hoddle St... within Victoria.    Eastern Victoria being ripped off.

 

the AFL punters of the SthEast & East of Melbourne, especially the regions are being treated poorly.   The supporters,  the communities which could use games out in they're area,  the Business people, & the Tradesmen & workers could all use a stadium being built @ Sth Dandenong.

I can't believe i'm saying this because i hate Docklands but it would be crazy for it to not continue as the second AFL ground in Victoria. Why?

• It is perfectly located - a ground is needed to service the West. I live in Altona and as much as i dislike the ground it is brilliant to be able to get one train from my place to the ground. Brilliant. For me the time it takes out of my weekend (kids, housework etc etc) is a big factor and getting PT to the g, whilst not too onerous can take another 30 each way than Docklands.
• Praha notes that it screws up Docklands. I agree but who cares? Its not the AFL's responsibility to make the Docklands a pleasant environment (by the by i reckon the Docklands has been a huge [censored] up and unbelievably we look like repeating exactly the same mistakes at Fisherman bend - but that's another story)  
• We don't play there that often so the fact that it is a [censored] ground is not an issue for me - that said many people like it and as someone who sits at the top of the Ponsford the view from the top level at DL is brilliant
• The AFL will own it soon enough. Use it until the end of its lifespan (say 2035) and it will be worth billions more than it is now. They should buy land under the Bolte now or in the ezone just past North Melbourne Station as someone else suggested and build a new ground once Ethiad is finished

i hear this but i can't see it. It will only be replaced by another huge skscraper anyway which would be even more blocking. it's not as though it would just become parklands. at the moment as you come out of southern cross stn you can't even see it, totally obscured by the strange shaped nab building built so close to it.

Yeah exactly. What do people think will be built in place of Docklands stadium? A school? A park? Come on. More ugly shoebox apartments with not enough parking.

There are people out there slavering at the thought of that land going up for sale. Maybe Eddie is one of them.

In the map above :.....  see the 'E-gate reactive',,  within the circular railway track,  just west of the Nth Melbourne railways station. 

This patch of ground is adjacent to Nth Melbourne railway station.   Which serves all of our SthWest, Western & Northern railway lines from/to country Victoria,    & including Adelaide, Canberra & Sydney lines.   All passing through the Nth Melbourne Station,  on the way to Southern Cross station.

 

This was to be the site of E-Gate stadium...

Afl need to find a solution were smaller clubs can play to smaller crowds & make money like Geelong do on their home ground.. That's how you get clubs controlling their own destiny financially ..

current Stadium deals only benefit interstate & larger clubs ....

So  your  suggesting  my  wife  and  I  walk  from  Punt  road  to  the  present  Royal  arcade   in  all  weathers  and  time  of  night.  We  will  be  75  when  it  is  completed[ if  on  time] Simple  really, just  a  light  jog  at  11 oclock  at  night.

  Why  must  ALL  grounds  in  Melbourne  have  to  be  within  spitting  distance  of  one  another?  

  What  I  am  trying  to  say  is  Melbourne  does  not  stop  at  Punt  road, you  don't  fall  off  the  end  of  the  earth  if  you  venture  east  of  punt  road,  like  some  Monty  Python  skit.

  As  the  MFC  is  one  of  the  lower  sides regarding  crowds  this  new  stadium  would  be  aimed  squarely  at  US. How  would  you  like  getting  just  one  home  game  on  the  G  each  year, And  every  second  year  the  ANZAC  home ?  I  know  I  wouldn't  as  the  G  is  the  home  of  the  Dees  but  with  this  new  ground  Punt  road  would  be  our  new  home.

This is just the Tigers jumping on Eddies Media attention bandwagon. This will never happen, the AFL will buy Docklands stadium for $1 in a few years and everything will be fine so why is this even a topic of conversation??

Melbourne is becoming the city of stadiums.

I am not sure that I follow.  I use the Dandenong line myself to get to the G, and you are right that the new arrangements for the trains will mean trains on that line will not go directly to Richmond. As you said you can either change at Caulfield or as I said go to the new CBD South (2nd stop after Caulfield) and either walk from there (which is probably what I will do) or get a train from nearby Flinders St to Richmond. More hassle than now? Yes. End if the world? No.

I'm sure the footy trains would run to the 'G' on gamedays.  Just because of changes Re underground tunnels thru the Domain & to the city,  they won't rip out the existing rail lines from Richmond to Carnegie & beyond,  so its just a matter of using the old route for special MCG major events,  & for the Tennis centre,  Rugby @ aami,  etc.

Of course the old train lines will be there. But I am not sure that they will have the capability to run the Dandenong line trains to Richmond. Even if they do, they may not run those services. Put it this way -- you may be right, but I wouldn't rely on that being the case.

Even without the new EddieHad Stadium, which I am sure is the name that he would insist on using, under grounding Richmond station, through which about 9 services run, plus V line and freight, would be a monumentally disruptive for years, and exorbitantly expensive excercise.  Even under grounding a few stations on the Dandenong line is too much hence Denial Andrews' (until recently) secret sky rail plan.
