Training - Friday 11th March, 2016

Recommended Posts

Got there about half an hour into the session. Whilst i'm no seasoned track watcher you could tell it was a fairly light session. Missing or at least I never spotted them were, Roos, Vandenberg, Lumumba,Spencer, Stretch, Hulett, either King, Dunn, Weiderman, Hunt, Terlich ,White and Matt Jones. I won't go into specific drills because I'm crap at describing them and I'm sure others will do it a lot better than I. Goodwin took the session with Brett Allison also running some of the drills. Despite it being a lite session at times the intensity was first rate. Worth noting is that Jade Rawlings has it in his head that O'Mac needs toughening up. In one drill he pitted himself directly against Oscar three times and didn't hold anything back, at one stage decking Oscar with an errant elbow, much to the amusement of every one watching. Oscar took it as well as could be expected. In all three instances Rawlings beat O'Mac. Finally big brother stepped in and went one on one against Rawling and beat him comprehensively. The other thing of note was the vertical leap on both Petracca and Harmes, both these guys can jump. Not to be outdone old man Trengove got in the act and got some air and seemed mighty happy with his efforts. The boys finished the session practicing goal kicking. They seemed to be trying to bend it left to right from the left hand side pocket. Salem seemed to be the most proficient and was instructing the others on the technique, i.e. the point of the ball facing away from the goal for a right hander  at the point of contact and the facing the opposite way for a left hander. The skipper thought he could nail from the outside of the ground, alas with no success. I took some happy snaps which you can access via the link. This is a different team to ones we have seen. Smiles all around. It feels very different to me and I hope that we carry it through the year.

Watched training for an hour this morning. The NAB challenge squad were joined by Petracca, Trengove, JKH and Joel Smith. Gus Brayshaw clocked up a few km's on the sidelines and moved well with a heavily strapped knee. Dawesy was on the scooter and Ben Newton did a lot of work with crossy.
The focus was on ball movement and Benny Matthews barked a lot of instructions at the boys, with the emphasis being on taking care of the ball. Jesse Hogan didn't do the whole session. Not sure why as he moved very well.
Based on how they set up today look for Oscar McDonald to fill Dunn's role this week and Wagner to take Jayden Hunt's spot, as Jayden trained separately from the main group on the back oval. Jayden was the one player not at the Season Launch. Is anyone aware of something going on with him?

The lads playing at Casey tomorrow were not sighted.

Stopped by at the very end, didn't see anything much that hasn't been reported.

As a long time sufferer of MFCSS I found it disappointing that Goodwin and Salem had to instruct Viney, Harmes and a few others how to get a drop punt to move in the air.

Still work for our development team to do on organisation to make sure that every little thing is covered in their instructions to players.

I might be wrong but I thought they were trying to bend the ball left to right, not the more natural right to left, ( for a right footer ). Even Jones was trying it out and I'm pretty sure he can bend a ball right to left. Goodwin was also not so much instructing as trying it out for himself. Why they were doing this is beyond me.

Maybe they are expecting strong or swirling winds at Doglands at the weekend?

A quick question for the regular track-watchers. It seems the marking bags are out a bit lately. Is this more so than usual? Are they drills that everyone partakes in? Is it a light spot of frivolity or are the players given a decent amount of instruction on technique/positioning etc.? Cheers.

Top quality pics O'Fiddy!

I've noticed this in the two games so far and it's also evident in your 6th and 9th pics and in the background of your pic 3: We should run a book on which round Ben Kennedy will be blood-ruled off having bitten his tongue! :o:)

You can add Tyson to that as well.

It's just asking for trouble.

I'd be interested in this too - wondering if there's a contested marking emphasis going around in response to the interchange cap.

With Hogan, Gawn and McDonald already out there, a little extra development across the team could make contested marks a decisive advantage in our game.

Plus, top fun to watch.

I think it was Goodwin who suggested it to Viney that instead of practising on his right he learns how to move the ball from right to left as a left footer. Salem didn't need any instructions, he nailed the first one.

I doubt it's even a technique many forwards use these days but they still should. From deep in a forward pocket and too far out to attempt a checkside snap, you can curve a drop punt the more unnatural way by a combination of changing your ball drop and/or arc of your leg swing, just like a golfer hitting a fade or draw. Of course there are some players (Tom Hawkins these days, David Neitz) who kick best moving it left to right for a right footer.

I don't expect Jack Viney or Nathan Jones to have mastered it, but it would be nice as experienced footballers if they at least had heard and understood the concept.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
