Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Jack Trengove was slow in a slow team. He was also unfairly an integral cog of our midfield after playing about 5 games.

He was slow because he had (undiagnosed) stress fractures in his foot.

He ran 2.97 seconds for 20 metres in state screening before he was drafted (considered good), so he certainly wasn't "slow" when he first came to the club.  And I didn't think he was slow in his first 2 years.  Ever since he's looked like he was running in quicksand, but I put that down to the injury.

Thanks Jack.

I was interested when Clayton Oliver was interviewed by Barry Hall after the game and how similar they looked in size.  I think that rather than Josh Kennedy I'm hoping that Clayton will be more like Nathan Fyfe.  He has the natural ball getting ability, he has the strength in the air, he has the lateral movement and he has the decision making. He also seems to have the determination to succeed and the competitive nature that is so important.  Most importantly he looks like Jordie.

I think in his third year he'll be our best mid.

Maybe Barry Hall was stooping over?

Times have changed. He will be a role player in a team that has a balance between speed and hardness. His balance and poise will compliment just nicely.

I thought Jack was quite capable of fulfilling a midfield role from the get go but I seem to recall him spending a fair amount of time as a half forward in his first and wouldn't have called him an integral cog in the midfield at that stage of his career at all.

I still think that is where he played his best football WJ.

IMO he is a half forward I would be very  happy to see him playing well in that role.

AVB was on crutches the first time I saw him at the season launch but one of the players mentioned that this was a precaution. He will only miss this week.

So will Joel Smith due to a head knock.

Everyone is saying that Jack Trengove and Christian Petracca are ready to be unleashed but nobody can say exactly when. If it's to be this week, I suppose we'll know when the team sheets for this week's Casey Scorpions practice match match comes out.

I got to meet Mitch King briefly and told him he's already a legend for getting Clayton Oliver up to Morrish Medal status with his hit outs ?. He has a younger brother playing footy for Wodonga so Dazzle Davey could perhaps keep a lookout for him?

And speaking of Clayton Oliver, one thing that impresses is his size. Back in the day, I'm sure he would have been a KPP but I can see Roosy turning him into a Josh Kennedy of the Sydney variety

Yes he does, his name is Charlie King.

I made a comment around draft time that watching Oliver play live several times he had the style of a Luke Parker because of his strong contested mark in the air. But his size and body strength I feel will end up like Josh Kennedy. I have been surprised watching him lately that he looks a lot taller then most of our mids. I wouldn't be surprised if he has grown to about 190cm tall. He stood next to Joel Smith (listed at 191cm) at the AGM and he looked pretty much same height as him.

Petracca - It's especially hard to talk about Trengove's 'speed' when this guy is around him. First time I've seen him in the flesh and he clearly has some gears. At some stages during drills he'd just turn it on and break through or accelerate past a defender. A very special trait to have. His kicking also has an explosive quality to it. During some of the kicking drills, he'd really punch the footy hard and it would zip through the air to his team-mate with a lot of power. Those quads. Monstrous I tell you. And as a poster previously said, his contested marking and vertical jumping were pretty damn impressive. He'll be a nightmare to handle as that mid-sized forward.

Does that description not sound like you're talking about Ablett (of the senior variety)?

Thanks for the reports. Is there any timeframe for the return of JKH? Unless I've missed a Misson

report haven't seen anything regarding his injury seriousness.

I saw JKH at training for the first time in a while and he looked fine. There were no major contact drills to see if he would sit out, he wasn't taped and he kicked a goal from the 50m line so I think he'll play pretty soon at Casey. I would suspect he has his work cut out to get a go back in the main game. He looks like he feels like he doesn't belong. Head down, bum up and work his arse off and he may get a chance mid season.

I remember him as slow but probably unfairly and in hindsight after the stress fractures.

He is not a very penetrating kick which is a good indicator of slow twitch fibres. Slow twitch fibres equals slow burst of speed.

Don't get me wrong i think Trengove will be in the best 22 when he is fit.

I thought he was slow in 2011 and even started a thread about it here.

He's not just a slow runner, he's a slow mover in general.

A great indication of the injury he had and the lack of power he could generate.

Trengove is an excellent kick of the ball, penetration not a problem...

Jack Trengove will really struggle to play another senior game at the MFC.

Anyone who thinks otherwise then do this....

Pick your best 22 and decide who you would play! Would Trengove get a game???

And what position would you play him??

Hard??you betcha!

After that then come back to me !

Too long out!

Unfortunate but ... lets focus on reality!

Eh

How can you run under 3 seconds for 20 metres if you're a slow runner ?

He has a deliberate style, but he wasn't"slow".

But I'm sick of arguing about it.  He'll either make it or he won't.

I think he will.

Easy, he's in my best 22 to start with.

Off HF or HB, rotation through the midfield...you don't lose class & footy iq.

I am going to make a huge statement with a small disclaimer. (if his foot causes no inconvenience) Jack will come back better than ever. He only needs to be able to get contests and his football smarts will hold him in very good stead. As you rightly said - Balanced and skillful footballers who make good decisions are a valuable commodity.

If he can stay on the park, Jack's perfect position is off half back. A good user, good decision maker and highly disciplined. Trengove and Salem releasing off half back. That'll be nice.

Playing Jack off half back also releases Vince into the midfield. I know it was just the Bulldogs game, but don't waste Vince. Put him in the guts.

Disagree we have a team that has a balance of speed and hardness. We certainly have hardness, not sure about the speed. Still, I think your point about playing a role is right. Jack can now settle into being a role player.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
