No but he's the only one the AFL clubs trust. Kind of silly. But they've picked their man so they stay with him.

Apart from the half dozen others I know of who regularly scope and reconstruct AFL players knees. By the sounds, he's got a meniscal tear, which will have been reported by the radiologist, the person who is best qualified to assess the scans, not the orthopaedic surgeon. So guess what? 4 to 6. The only potential fly in that ointment is the possibility of a tibial plateau fracture to go with it. That would be months, so fingers crossed.

Agreed with Webber Always hard to interpret layman <Mahoney> comments on blood vessel damage .

may well be some swelling ? Bleed ? Other pathology

sometimes early post injury scan may need repeating when swelling or bleeding settle .

m r I sometimes can under or over diagnose pathology

The only positive is that a cruciate rupture would be immediately obvious on MRI. If there is a lot of oedema it might take a couple of days to get a decent view of the  other structures within the knee.

Anyone else bracing themselves for the worst?

Or am I alone..

Hopefully it's just us that are bracing ourselves and they aren't bracing a certain someone's knee even further right now

The delay has me pretty worried

I don't think,  a comment saying 'it doesn't require a scan',  says that,  a precautionary scan won't be carried out.

I think the statement is meant to convey there is little to worry about.  & Not,  that any requirements,  will not be done.

I always thought some sort of scan would be done as he was on crutches,  just as a checkup.

I think your on the money.

Angus will be fine......us however !! lol

Awaiting a specialist who is overseas to look at the scans.

believe it's better to wait a couple of days and get the best to diagnose it opposed to another giving their diagnoses sooner.

also gives time for swelling to subside,  so any scans can be clearer?

Sad that he doesn't own a laptop to see scans whist o/s

he would need to see the patient to inspect the leg at the same time,  to form a complete assessment.

the young Bartram comes to memory,,,,  so the wait for that feller is well worth it...  if its a meniscal tear,  he can go in immediately to have a closer look,  & any clean,  if need be.

Better to taker the time with knees,  especially at this time of preseason.

another one comes to mind way back, Paul Obrien.  should have had his knee checked at halftime, but didn't worry about it.  ruptured after half time.  I've always felt he tweaked it in 2nd Qtr.

I'm a Melbourne supporter so I'm expecting the worst. I've been called a pessimist, but I regard pessimists as well informed optimists.

Players should know better then to get injured, it's bad for our blood pressure.

Possibly just me but  seems two sets of rules going around.  If it happens TO a Melb player... "play on"  ..nothing to see here...BY a Melb player....  hotline to the MRP !!

Harlett leaves the ground to accentuate the tackle and thumping into the ground.  I recall somewhere this is frowned upon... Result.. Brayshaw buggers knee... game goes on.

Ollie lays a fair and legal tackle.. "without leaving the ground" ...opponent has hands free...and cops a fine

Why hasn't the Port player been cited here ??

Agree BB I posted earlier that I saw Hartlett jump and put his full body weight onto Brayshaw's knee, thus the injury. Forget slings, jumps etc just move to duty of care     on the tackler, if the guy tackled get injured then you wear the consequences. That said if you are Trengove and you sling tackle Dangermouse and he plays the next week you should be safe, especially if he kicks 6 the next week!

If everyone goes around doing tackles like that all the time, there will not be anyone left to play. So I think it should be looked at by the AFL Umpires at least.

Or do we wait for the farcical situation of Ablett having two cartilage operations courtesy of Waite's weight.

Quad insertion tendon tear?? Given the riding into the ground with knees bent I wouldn't put this out of the question. If it is this ah he will be missing for a while!

I also would question that you would wait for Julian Feller if thats who they are waiting for. Many other emminent specialists around such as Prof Richard De Steiger, Dirk Van Bavel, Cameron Norsworthy, all very very highly regarded!

I think if you leave the ground prior to the act of tackling or bumping,  there may already be a rule re interpretation to sort this ?

leaving the ground to bump,  or to me to tackle,  is not doing the right thing,  unless the target is still above you:  ie:  someone too big,  or already in the air themselves.

Surely jumping onto another player intent on bringing them down,  is infringing in some way..    the player tackling in my mind,  should start off with they're feet (both) on the ground,  even if they're being dragged & just they're toes are touching the ground.

# no slinging into turf head first,  no driving into turf from behind,  no jumping onto them buckling their legs....

# just latching onto them & drag them down,  or spin them if you can standing up,  but not chicken-winged into the ground.

what about PCL ?

I wonder if its similar to Dom Tysons knee injury last year.

Unsurprising, there are definitely players that masquerade as the good guys of the game, but would happily down the opposition's gun players at the earliest opportunity.

Never forget Hodge on Wingard. Hasn't stopped the boys-club media from gushing over the guy at every opportunity, naturally.

Just watched it again. I didn't notice it initially but it is quite a deliberate attempt to jump on him isn't it. Crude at the least.

I think more crude that deliberate.

Brayshaw was running away from Hartlett. He couldn't dive straight in his back and I don't think he had the leverage or strength to halt his momentum and drag him down on his side.

I think the lift was an attempt to get Brayshaw off balance to then tackle him but Brayshaw slipped out forward and Harlett ended up slamming the pair of them down on Brayshaw's knee.

Both easy to clinically diagnose so it ain't either, although the drive of the knee into the ground is classic PCL injury mechanism. All impatient armchair speculation really, I'm sure he'll be fine with a scope and a couple of weeks on the bike ?

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
