Would be interested to know how athletes from track and field who have been banned get around it as a comparison.

Don't know about track and field, but banned cyclists just ... cycle. By themselves. There's no "getting around it".

Does anyone at the EFC get irony?????? These guys are mad.

Their new coach was in charge of a club during a highly publicised drug taking regime. And they won a flag.

Now the FIRST person they hire as a fill in player is someone who is coming back fom a drug suspension, Ryan Crowley.

My God you couldn't make this stuff up

He also played in a pretty dubious era of a club where they won a couple of flags...

That's what I was trying to get at, how is there getting around it when you can train. But Bing do they train with another group of riders paid for by the Riders Association?

I would've thought every player signed up to the WADA code upon starting their AFL career. You can't just go train together at some non-WADA-approved facility in a country that doesn't recognise them.

It would still be a breach of your agreement to abide by the WADA code, would it not? Farcical if not the case.

I thought the employment of a Chemist as the new Senior Coach says it all!!!!

nothing

as long as they are not funded by essendon, the afl or the aflpa (which is 100% funded by the afl).if supporters or independent benefactors wish to fund them so be it.

Are you referring to that billionaire cadaveric ex-President of EFC?

The "cadaveric" Paul Little..... Thankyou Mono

Any one know what the ACC's next move is? They notified the Sporting Codes and action was taken against the NRL and AFL.

One would think in this gigantic stew pot that it is not just players that are guilty. Operation Imperio would have captured more than just the players.

Irony.  The EFC have players banned for PED use. They are permitted fill in players. The first player selected is a banned drug cheat.

I imagine the sponsors will be delighted.

It's a Saad situation

I don't know if any of the suspended players are in the US right now, but if they are they should be watching Frontline on PBS tonight (ie, 19 Jan US time). I assume it's not about the EFC, but any program called "Supplements and Safety" should surely hold their attention.

Essendon braced for compensation from doping

  Quote

Two of Australia’s leading personal injury law firms are preparing compensation claims against the Essendon Football Club on behalf of footballers banned for doping.

A group of six players, including captain Jobe Watson, ruckman Thomas Bellchambers and Port Adelaide forward Angus Monfries, is receiving legal advice from Holding Redlich managing partner Howard Rapke, who has begun the complex task of calculating each player’s financial cost and injury from the three-year drugs scandal.

Western Bulldogs forward Stewart Crameri, coach Brent Prismall and former Essendon player Sam Lonergan, who will be unable to take up a coaching job in Launceston as a consequence of last week’s Court of Arbitration decision, are being advised by rival firm Slater and Gordon.

A third group of players is talking to players manager Peter Jess, who has approached prominent barrister and sports law expert Tony Nolan QC to represent Nathan Lovett-Murray, a former Essendon player who until the CAS decision was the coach of an Aboriginal team in Victoria.

Another can of worms about to open ...

It's like the burglar who falls through the ceiling of the house he's breaking into and sues the home owner.

I suspect that any of the 12 that sue EFC are flagging they won't be playing for the bombers when their suspension ends.  A fellow on bf has started a thread cleverly called the 'Dirty Dozen'...it asks posters to vote on who they think will stay at EFC.

That Jobe is one to 'throw down the gauntlet' is significant as he has been the glue that has kept the 34 unified throughout.  Really feel for the guy.  He has been a stalwart for three years now seems to have had enough.

Interesting comments by Hinkley, they end up with one less player than Essendon.

But the thing that interests me most is his comment about there not being a contingency plan already in place for CAS handing out bans. Surely event the inept and corrupt beast that is the AFL would have to have given this SOME thought? Apparently not.

My first thought about legal action by players against the EFC suggests that the consent forms they signed which got them into strife with CAS may now be their undoing in the legal action.

Maybe or maybe not but at least it lets the circus go on.

My thoughts:the players thought the consent forms were giving them indemnity, they actually indemnified the club against the players, and most likely are as legally robust as anything formulated by Dennis Denuto.

Perhaps they could claim they were signed under duress? Difficult when others didn't sign but possible. Perhaps EFC provided legal advice that the forms were ok and that they shouldn't seek outside advice.

yep, that dank man is amazing. he gives not only medical advice but by drawing up the consent form, legal advice too

and everyone at efc accepts his medical and legal status. it's quite mind blowing actually when you consider the club had real doctors and real lawyers

DC, real doctors and lawyers would have said steer clear, run away now, have nothing to do with these shysters.

Is this even possible?:

Crowley: "In time I'd like to sit down and have a chat to the 12 players. I could give them a real insight as to what they may go through."

I would have thought that now Crowley is on the Essendon books he can't have anything to do with the other 12 players. If that's right, someone needs to tell the Essendon social media person that this tweet was probably not the best one to publish.

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
