We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Oh no.  The AFL are totally committed to the integrity of the game (LOL)

Fair is not what AFL is about anymore. Any given Sunday is a concept only. When you have the same teams in the Top 4 for many years, it becomes boring for the rest of the 14 teams and FAIR is no where to be seen.

This is why attendances drop off and no-one talks about great games anymore. They talk about odds and who is up for contract. This isn't sport anymore, its business.

Vlad and Gil have set the game back years, if not decades, by their absolute favoritism of the 'big clubs' and their special franchises to the detriment of the majority of clubs and their supporters.  I hope it bites them both in the bum, very painfully.

Monoccular nice work except when you have the same teams in the top for many years. Those teams have smart peoplle working for them.In the 50's the Dees won stacks of premierships. The Hawks and Kangaroos were pathethic during that time. In the EPL many people support their team knowing that they will not see their club win the silverwear. The [censored] weak clubs are offered a sedate draw, they get the good draft picks and still they fail.In this day and age you would expect all yeams to be closer. Perhaps we should introduce a handicap system the team finishes to deduct 6 games, the bottom teams are gifted 6 wins that will even up the comp.JUST JOKING  for all you kiddies out there is no need to re quote.

However, it does beg the question of how are the players are going to keep football fit?  I think (not sure) but under WADA rules they cannot be involved with any aussie rules competition/club at any level.  But it is easy to imagine an EFC coterie member organising for their 12 to train at a new neutral gym near an oval with good fitness staff and recovery facilities under the eye of a retired AFL/VFL coach.  Unlikely to be Bomber Thompson but someone like him.

In that scenario Bomber (or whoever) could talk to Woosha to get directions and programs for the 12. It will be very difficult for ASADA/WADA to police the rule that players cannot have contact with a club as there are 34 players spread around the country.  Hope they are watching the EFC 12 closely tho.

EFC have form.  I fully expect them to find every way possible to get around all of WADA suspension rules

I was right on the money!

Just heard KB say the AFLPA is considering taking the 34 players to an overseas (high altitude) location to train at a (non AFL) club!  No mention was made of a coach but I suspect my prediction of a past AFL/VFL coach being included would happen.

My thought is that the AFLPA are being very ingenious...34 players gives them the opportunity to play practice matches which not only keeps the players physically fit it enables them to stay match fit.

I have to agree with Patrick Smith response that he finds the AFLPA trying to find every avenue to get around the CAS decision (because they don't like it) as obscene!

Would be interested to know how athletes from track and field who have been banned get around it as a comparison.

Yes, a small fortune.

I wish I knew what the WADA do's/don'ts were for players under suspension.  I think it is something along the lines of not being able to do anything/anywhere associated with or sponsored by the AFL.

I have posted earlier that I expect a very early 'out of court settlement' with EFC/AFL to get money to players asap (especially for those with families).  I also posted that EFC coterie's might fund a non-afl related training program.  The AFL fully funds AFLPA so I doubt it can directly pay for player training etc.

So I would imagine the funding would be some combination of these.  Only problem for me is that a fair chunk of the 'out of court settlement' would come from the AFL.  If it is a court settlement I doubt it would constitute payment by the AFL so probably would not contravene WADA rules.

I should emphasize, I am only hypothesing.

So there effectively wont be any penalty right?

That is what AFLPA appears to be aiming for.

However, they will never get their integrity back.  I think this is why they are smarting.  Bearing in mind the CAS suspension was 2 years, less 1 year (to the date of AFL Tribunal), less 4 months (for provisional suspension served).  Net result 11 months.

I think the players could accept a guilty verdict and 11 months suspension if they had been given a 1 year (50%) discount for 'no significant fault' (say instead of the 1 year backdating) as it would exonerate them from any fault ie support their 'we were doped and duped' line so they could walk away saying they it wasn't their fault.  If that happened they would not have to wear the 'drug cheat' label.

Whether AFLPA succeed in any of their 'get around WADA rules' plans is yet to be seen.

I suspect WADA will be watching carefully, certainly the 17 still playing AFL and especially the EFC 12.

I can't see the problem with the "Essendon 34" organising their own training. If the AFLPA wants to be involved, so what? I don't see how this in any way is an avenue "to get around the CAS decision". Once these players (and ex-players) have served their penalty they are entitled to resume their careers if they want. One of the prerequisites for continuing AFL careers will be that the players must be fit. What's wrong with them working together to stay fit?

I tend to agree, though i wonder how the AFLPA could possibly afford to pay for something like that. I assume they get money from players and the AFL but also assume they are a not for profit and don't run up surpluses. So again how do they pay? Even running an AFL standard fitness program here in Australia would cost upwards of $200k you'd reckon, give you'd need to have a full time fitness person, pay for equipment and ground hire, insurance etc etc. Also not all 34 players live in Melbourne so you would need to sort relocation and accommodation costs.

I agree with Lucifer that a settlement will be reached with the players and that it will be relatively generous. In which case the players might pay for such a camp or more likely their own personal training regime with personal trainer etc.

On the point of a settlement  if the players can't be paid for this year how does suing for lost income fit? I mean if they successful sue for the lost income and get an income they end up getting paid for the year!

spot on dc and as long as the training is not associated with any afl related or associated club ie they cannot coach the little league for example.  I also heard kb say that players can for example use Melbourne storm facilities but can't train with the club.

i'm not sure kb can make that claim with any authority. melbourne storm's facilities are not really theirs as they share them with mfc and the soccer clubs. doubt there would be spare capacity anyway. even if it were somehow possible they would have to pay. by my reading storm (or the others at aami) can have nothing to do with them. if they could train using the aami park facilities it would be a farce

I wouldn't think they can use Melbourne Storm facilities as the NRL is also under the WADA code. As long as the AFL havent pulled a shifty when signing up to the code then the players are banned from all sports that are under the WADA code. That is why there is talk of them going to the USA to train in the drug filled NFL system.

Interesting point. Whose facilities are they? If they're owned (let's say) by the Yarra Park Trust, or whatever the Government body is that manages the land in the precinct, and just leased by the various sporting clubs, such as Melbourne Storm and the MFC, why couldn't the Essendon 34 also lease them, should they be available?

Forgive me if this point has been laboured beforehand, however I think recent events warrant it being raised again. The AFLPA and others spending time and energy bemoaning how 'unfair' this all is on the players are missing the key point - Player Welfare. The EFC injected drugs into the players and many, if not all, those players still have no idea exactly what's been administered to them. This goes way beyond football and missing a season...the recent news from France illustrates just how badly things can go wrong even in a governed regimen: French Drug Trial Is Halted After Patient Becomes Brain Dead.

Yep. Haven't seen anyone in the mdia connect those dots. BUt Dank was experimenting by his own admission in the texts between himself and Alavi the compunding chemist. He should be locked up.

Does anyone at the EFC get irony?????? These guys are mad.

Their new coach was in charge of a club during a highly publicised drug taking regime. And they won a flag.

Now the FIRST person they hire as a fill in player is someone who is coming back fom a drug suspension, Ryan Crowley.

My God you couldn't make this stuff up

It's just been suggested that there should be a Royal Commission in to the Administration of the AFL.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs.
