NATIONAL DRAFT PICKS 3 & 7

good result, we are going to have one last dip into the draft and hope that we are able to develop these players into the backbone of our list.
We can still trade to get back into the first round next year and hopefully sign Prestia as a restricted free agent (i think he qualifies)

Parish was our go to from what i hear and essendon were heavily invested in him, Saints really really wanted Curnow now they have traded that off he might slip to 10.

Disagree, we can tell now that this is a good or bad deal, I think good. In a few years we will be able to tell if our recruiting staff were good with using the picks gained. The success of the players we draft is a reflection on the draft recruitment, not the trading we do.

I'm sorry, but early draft picks in isolation mean nothing. Draft picks equates to draft recruitment. Our tanking years were designed to get early draft picks. It ended up being a massive fail.

Good trade and makes a few of the usual "Sky is falling, Whoa is me" Demonlanders look very silly for going early as usual

Said it many times in the last year or so, the fact our club no longer leaks doesn't mean we aren't doing things in the background

Who knows trade period isn't over yet, but happy to recruit a few this year, the draft has been talked about as shallow after the first dozen so will trust the FD to get the picks right as they have done since taking over

Which is exactly what you are doing. Calling the early crow on this trade, then calling out Demonlanders for going early, bit hypocritical.

Anyone still think we got screwed on Howe? We plugged pick 29 directly in to a trade we were going to use Howe in. That was his market value.

Anyone also still care that we used 25 instead of 29 for Melksham?

Anyone still reckon they'd do a better job than the amateurs at the club at the moment?

I'm feeling so smug right now. Hehe.

Yep I do.

We could've used 25 to get one of the 3 Gold Coast 2nd round picks next year instead of pick 43.

Getting back a 2nd rounder next year in a deeper draft would've helped us mitigate against the loss of the 1st round pick.

Now we are stuck with pick 43 in a draft with very little Vic Metro talent which means it's a pretty useless pick.

We've got better scouts and a better development system in place than we used to. Sure, it's still a lottery, but I feel confident backing the club's decisions at the moment.

O'Kearny or something similar to that is a chance to be available around that mark, or even grabbing a player from WAFL or VFL.

25 and 29 are much of a muchness, at the end of the day I was a bit eh about the trade, but now after todays business i think we have done well overall this trade/free agency period

PFt. He is not claiming to have a crystal ball about how players are going to turn out. He is saying that muppets have been proven wrong for slagging off the club this trade period. Which is clear.

Exactly, he doesn't have a crystal ball, so then how can it be a good trade? He is the one going early on this, and slandering Demonlanders for doing exactly the same. Let's just wait 12 months, better let just wait a few years before calling this deal a good trade/bad trade etc. I know patience isn't at a premium around here, but this deal is neither a good/bad deal as of yet. It is far too early.

BTW, if you are one of the many who have prattled on about what we did and failed to do and how Mahoney sucks and how you are a better negotiator and waawaawaa... this would be a good time to stick your hand up and admit you don't know WTF you're talking about

So we trade a future first rounder so we have 2 picks in the top 10 in the weakest draft in a decade well played, .

Rightly or wrongly, I have been criticised for my comments about Mahoney. So because my cred on DL is important to me I have gone back thru my posts mentioning him. They have been positive, neutral or supportive. One comment that offended some (not you) was when I said I would like him and Roos to stop saying we ‘are not a destination club' because even if true it talks the club down. I still hold that view. But, if you think that is 'anti-Mahoney' I put my hand up.

Back on topic. The Age has reported Mahoney as saying: "It was an important deal. We've had a strategy of the last few years, we wanted to add two players in the top 10. We want to make the most of the time we're down the end of the ladder. We don't plan to be down here for too long."

This is a strategy that has been held close inside the club. Love the 'no leaks' it reflects. Also, love the optimism for the future, of the last line.

Edit: added 'for the future'

If early draft picks in isolation mean nothing then late draft picks surely mean nothing as well, therefore the advantage of this trade is negligible.

You also agree that we stuffed early picks due to our recruiting, not the picks themselves, that is my point, the recruiters failed, not the picks. We have improved our position this year and as such it is a win. How we use that position to our advantage is the next challenge.

Where's he been for the last decade?

Finally this club is backing itself to win and rise up the ladder. Its a risky deal that shows a lot of balls. Dissect the trade all you like but the most important thing is the attitude change at the MFC.

Also I reckon we definitely moved up to pick 3 to get Curnow as the Dons likely would have taken him.

The way I see it is I think we thought:

Pick 6 this year v Pick 10 this year = same same, no real difference between who will be available at each pick. Weiderman might be the guy for us at either of these picks

Pick 29 this year v Pick 43 this year = both pretty ordinary.

Pick 3 this year v 1st rounder next year = we can get a good kid in now instead of waiting.

It's the pick 3 that will make this trade. Poor kids going to have some pressure on him but we can diffuse that externally by pointing to the rest of our good kids and pick 10.

He fits the Roos admired mould of big modern midfielder. Still wouldn't mind Parish now though, thought he'd be gone before.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
