WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CLAYTON OLIVER

We missed Ollie Wines, let's not make the same mistake.

Imagine this kid in the centre square, will cause explosions with Viney for the next 10 years. Much better prospect then Curnow in my opinion. By far

So, ollsik, is this your final bid?

i know. But Parish has been elite in the TAC cup for two years now. Oliver, has popped up mid year.

These are kids, they all develop at different rates. All that that says is that Parish came on earlier than others. It doesn't say anything at all about his ceiling, or what will happen 4+ years down the track. You only have to look at some of our own recent recruits for verification.

Would be happy with either of them. Or even both.

He looks like a canteen lady.

You may not be able to make a proper evaluation from watching highlights videos, but anyone that dedicated to a Facebook thread about themselves gets my nod of approval.

Have a look at who the recruiters have picked up in the last couple of drafts.

Our TOP 10 picks have all been over 183 cm and over 80 kgs. Brayshaw, Pettracca, Salem

There is a pattern here and I cant see them breaking this.

Roos wants big bodied tall mids and thats exactly what we will get. Parish is out of the picture.

That's the worst analysis/conclusion reaching I've ever read. Brayshaw and Petracca were unanimous top 3 picks. I doubt that Roos' philosophy swayed Taylor one iota.

What gives me the [censored] is our club hasn't leaked one little bit of info.

I want the old Melbourne back where Motor Mouth Connolly would open up with, tonight we will pick Jordon Gysberts, I assure you he will be better than our priority pick and pick one in a couple of years.

I want those leaks NOT!

Did he really say that?

Agree. I would have been happy to go with Parish and Mathieson to get a good mix of midfield talent with 4 AAs between them.

I wonder if the reluctance to pick Parish has to do with the nightmares endured in the wake of the decision to take Toumpas ahead of Wines three years ago.

im wondering if it more the trend of inside, strongly built mids being a safer bet with a high pick. Guys like Toump, O'rourke, Aish that are elite users of the ball and that killed it in the juniors just dont seem to have as good as strike rate as the more inside bigger guys - Brayshaw, Wines etc. not saying it is that cut and dry but it may be a trend.

all about risk and reward I guess. we would have argued in 2012 that Wines will have a impact straight away but his ceiling is not very high. but these days you dont need too many elites users of the ball - once you can kick well, its all about the stoppages

Oliver's TAC season courtesy of champion data's twitter.

Ranking points are equal to supercoach points.

Personally, not sold on oliver at pick 3 as it seems a stretch, however; if the club see something and pick him at 3 I'll get around him like any other player.

The good news on those ranking points is they were both trending up and also very consistent after the first 2 rounds when he was presumably getting some match fitness after missing some preseason.

That finish to the year is super impressive, as is the off the charts game which I presume was the game he kicked 6.

What is also amazing is that in his clip for AFL draft picks, he mentions he has just 1 vote in the Morrish Medal at Round 9.

I still feel we will pick up Parish over Oliver though as he is more of what we need, and has a longer more consistent body of work.

Drafting someone like Oliver is less of a risk than Parish. I feel given the state of us needing to draft competitors and bringing in tall big bodied mids, we will go with Clayton.

This is the argument im most keen on exploring...

Positionally, inside mids do have a much easier transition to AFL football and the bigger bodies are suiting the direction of the modern game more. That said, Parish is an inside mid, so its hard to say that his game would not translate to AFL level with multiple mids being around his height too.

Secondly, Oliver can be seen as more of a risk due to already having OP issues, not having played the carnival either years when compared to an injury free player who was all Australian both years. What are the relative odds of success from a player who did not actually play the carnival or reach all australian status relative to the other?

Its interesting to think about, either way il be happy!

Yes - but I wouldn't mind a player that could kick the freaking ball accurately. He would feel out of place, but he might be useful

Good article on Oliver here.

States how we met him at his home after the draft camp and that we were a lot nicer club to talk to than Essendon who ripped into him.

What a bunch of flogs!

Suck on these apples Essenscum.-

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
