FAREWELL JIMMY TOUMPAS

Featured Replies

I really wish Toumpas all the best.

I hope he makes it.

Yes, I hope both Toumpas and Kennedy pull something out of the fire.

at melbourne he seemed to lack defensive accountability, lack any great footballing nous, regularly turned it over, made excessive errors under a scintilla of pressure, and seemed to take the weight of the world on his shoulders.

for his sake i hope he can turn it around at the power; no doubt they have him earmarked to fill the role that polec and matt white hold, that of an outside runner.

funnily enough, i don't think he's quick enough to make a success of it; i see him being better, in the long term if he's going to make it, as an inside mid. and i don't think he has the strength or skills nor composure to make that role his own.

so where does he fit in? i guess the sanfl...

Speed - Not quick

Direction Change - Not Sam Mitchell-like

Grunt - Not significant

Skills - OK

Will we miss him - No

Why did we draft him - I dont know

It will be interesting to see how Toumpas goes in Port Adelaide. In a better team, might find that he improves a player. Can see him as someone helping Pittard coming off the half back line allowing for hartlett to come into the midfield.

So negative :)

Who's to say WE won't be the better team ?

Was worth having on the list even as a depth player. Given the right pre season and experience he would have been handy.

Essentially we hope that pick 29 is a success.

Good thing Kennedy is there, huh?

Hopefully that is the last absolute balls up with high picks...

...

If my memory is right, he was benched in Darwin last year w/o a possession in nearly a half of football?

I'd take Stringer over Wines.

I'd take Pavlich over Fiora

Ok now I'll say it:

"I wish we'd picked Ollie Wines."

I wasn't going to mention that....Too busy at work for an argument!!!

You're not wrong. Simply can not afford to stuff them up any longer.

I'm still bugged to how we had four early picks which arguably could all be duds pending a Trengove recovery and missed Fyfe at 21. Anyone rate him at the time or was he just well hidden by Freo?

It isn't a balls up, but in any case, it won't be. Happens to every club, and will happen again to us.

Let's not forget Collingwood are trading out two first round picks this year.

It just made sense at the time to pick Wines, Wines was best mates with Jack Viney since primary school and they were both merging into AFL at the same time.

[censored], Not one recruiter in the land thought that. You're a revisionist dreamer.

He had a sensational quarter against the Saints from memory but never kicked on.

Good luck Jimmy.

maybe one did

Just didn't come to pass. No revision there.

I'm not so sure about that. Rumour has it that Todd Viney was one recruiter that wanted Wines.

Many on here wanted Wines as well.

I thought we were after him and reports prior were that Wines and Viney junior pushed each other competitively which made me think they were from the same mould so to speak and if Viney was good enough then same argument would apply to Wines.

The papers reported Toump as higher and I guess we'll never really know what the actual recruiters wanted

He was supposed to be our outside runner.

But he had hip issues and Neeld as a coach.

Should never, ever, have been picked up ! Many on this site willed him to suceed, But found wanting almost always!

Soon forgotten, no regrets

we got the pick which was about right!

We move on!

FWIW, The Ox said on SEN yesterday that there was only one person who could be blamed for the selection of Toumpas - Mark Neeld. 'Blamed' was the word he used. He said that TViney and others at the club wanted Wines, but that Neeld wanted the outside run of Toumpas and that we had enough inside mids. Was quite definitive in his claim.

Apols if this has been mentioned before.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
