Do you get tired being such a wet blanket?

He's done it plenty of times.

he was our best player in the second half against Port. The chips were down. he beat his opponent many times and gave is good rebound. pity others didnt follow him

All of these responses are almost identical to what posters were saying about Frawley when he was putting off contract talks.

Of course there were and are times Garland beats his opponent. Just as there were times Frawley would beat his opponent. He had an AA year after all that was exhaustingly brought up time and time again as a means to defend him against those of us who were happy to see him go.

Look how it turned out. We landed Angus Brayshaw. Does any supporter think that we lost out on that one? I would be surprised if so. And this is only his first year..

I'm not saying we'll net someone like that for Garland. But the same drivel is being written in his defence and it's so tiresome.

The club is still so deep in it's own [censored] from having these senior blokes who are not only so up and down in individual performance but who also just don't have the capacity to create and inspire change! Garland doesn't have the capacity to instil fear in opponents around him nor does he lift team mates. He plays a very individual game, refuses to throw his weight around and constantly looks like he's just run a marathon. The dropping his head vision is one of many symbolic images. There are numerous nuances and subtleties in body language that players pick up on. Both opposition players and players of our own.

Garland as I said is one of a handful.

Drop-offs in performance like we saw against the Power occur because of a combination of reasons. The senior player issue is one of them.

Garland is hit and miss. I really like the bloke, and he earned my respect for how he kept his head high and kept trying in 2012 and 2013, undoubtedly the hardest time to be a Melbourne player in the past 50 years. I respect him for that.

But at the same time, like steve said, he's part of a problem that persists at the club, and that's inconsistent performance, and an inability to consistently assist in helping the team perform at the same high level every week.

I'm not saying I want to see him go, but at the same time I think him moving on would help us rid the club of a certain mentality that continues to plague us. If he can turn it around and help us to some wins this year on a consistent basis, I'd be happy to see him get a 2-3 year contract at 350-400k a year. But I've lost confidence in players like him, Dunn, Watts, Howe to rid themselves of that ugly approach to games the team is expected to lose. It's a losers mentality we can no longer accommodate.

In the end I suppose its about what Roos tells the list managers. Personally would be disappointed to see him go. Playing some good footy.

Frawley gave us next to nothing in his last few years, similar to what Howe is giving us now. FA

At least Garland is showing some pride in his performance.

Frawley gave us some good games last year, led hard and worked harder when playing forward. Comparing his 2014 output to Howe's 2015 output is hyperbolic.

Howe has given us some moments too but neither performed/are performing up to what their capabilities are.

The point really is that Garland still puts in.

Watch his body language during games, he's been mentally spent for 2 years.

He's gone.

I know what you mean - I've watched him quite a lot. Sometimes he carries himself like a beaten dog - but I think in this instance looks are utterly deceiving. To me, Garlo is the quintessential Roos Role Player, phlegmatic in victory and defeat.

I guess we'll see what happens, but he was the first player i thought of when Roos talked about players who will never get over the mental scarring of the last few years.

A complete digression from your point of course, but I still contend that the club was going the gus all the way regardless of any Frawley compo pick. When we did get that number 3 we said we'll have Petracca too thanks - and it was just going along with expectations to read CP's name first.

Garland of 2015 is Dunn of 2014.

Why can't they both play well in the same year?

That's the one time he has done that.

Did it against GWS in 2013 too, but I get your point. He's done it a couple of times, but if Roos thinks Col is one of those suffering from irreparable damage, then move him on.

EDIT. I've changed my tune in the space of a thread. What a dill.

We cannot afford to lose both Howe and Col. I hope Col stays. He is one person we need to keep.

Not sure why we cannot afford to lose Howe.

The guy plays 6 -7 good games a year and the rest are tripe.

I would trade tomorrow for a good deal.

self deprecating is very undervalued trait. I think we would get on well.

I am not saying he is not going to go like chip did. his heart was being questioned and as a supporter, I backed him up and pointed out that only last week he was one of few leaders.

Col has been a good player over the last 6 years and I will continue to back him

Garland of 2015 is Dunn of 2014.

Talking about Dunn, what the hell happened to the good form he produced in the first half of last year - talk about 2 steps forward and 1 backwards.

Surely the cursed Vice Capt position hasn't hampered him.

Not sure why when he was rated amongst our best last week when most other players dropped their heads.

Always puts in and doesn't make excuses, he is a must sign. Seeing how emotional he got after our Gold Coast win shows how much he bleeds red and blue. I want to see success for the guy

Not sure he plays 6-7 good games. I wouldn't have called the Bulldogs game a good game. He took a couple of good marks, but that's about it. This is the problem with Howe. His highlight reel masks his inadequacies as a footballer. I can't recall the last time he played a really good game. Perhaps, under Neeld.

Gee guys I was been generous.

But you are correct the good ones are far and few between.

Whatever the number he is expendable IMO

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
