Match Preview and Team Selection - Round 6

Surprised Michie is out, he was poor last week but did well against the Tigers when he came on to replace Kent. Considering we are light on for midfield rotations I would have thought someone like Watts or Howe would be on thinner ice.

lol first time in 5 years that I didn't hate Grimes' game and he gets dropped. Surely Richmond will chuck us a 2nd rounder for Cotch's new mentor.

I hope Spencer takes some of Hawthorn's angry pills and some of Essendon's 'roids.

Goodluck to SOS.

I'd like to reserve a Jack Watts thread for 10:35 pm Saturday night thank you.

No Jetta, no Melbourne.

This game was going to be my glorious return to the footy after a forced 3 year absence, but [censored] that.

Hopefully we will see your glorious return next week against the Hawks then.

Cannot believe that we haven't gone with Gawn and Riley who have both played well at Casey

Instead we have Spencer (Cant ruck) and Toumpas (completely underwhelming) in the Team

We are already carrying a passenger in Watts. I am very dissappointed in the selection we have lost this at the selection table

Why wouldn't you have Riley in in the Wet at the G against the Swans. Not even an emergency he must have really pi885d Roos off at some stage

Gawn has been inconsistent at Casey and Spencer's form has been good so he deserves the call up. I'm not convinced that he can make the grade but this is his opportunity, if he doesn't take it I doubt he will be on the list next year. The balls in his court now...

It's more about setting up the team now, we need to see who can play and who can't at the level.

I really don't get Roos and his selections. Last week we played Fremantle, one of the hardest running teams in the comp. So we play McKenzie and Michie, two absolute plodders who are great in a contest. This week we play Sydney, arguably the best contested side in the comp, so we bring in outside runners in Stretch and Toumpas and drop McKenzie and Michie.

I'm glad to see Spencer get a game. Jamar has been next to useless outside the centre circle yet again this year. At least we know that Jake will run until he drops.

I refuse to believe that Grimes is not in our best 22, and thought he was a long way from the worst last week. I would certainly have played him ahead of Toumpas.

Can't play full stop. And if you like I'll put the same comment up on Saturday night!

On top of the Mc Kenzie blunder last week is this one! Pig dog in the Wet against the swans should have been a "Shoe In"

Disagree, lacking confidence something fierce but he played extremely well in the first half on the weekend against casey, had a quiet second half because he had a super hard tag put on him.

Pigdog imo isn't getting a game this week imo because we are lacking pace and a few times this year that has been exposed, can't have all inside mids because the better teams will carve you up.

Yes, although i would turn this around and say :roos: & his FD are waiting desperately for next year in order to avoid a selection dillema like this again!

None of the "ins" are deserving IMO apart from Stretch and i wouldn't include him for his first try out against anyone in the top 8 with this list. A stronger list like Norf, Port, the Pies etc.... but not us and certainly not against a rampaging Swans on the rebound. Reminds me of the inclusion of Watts against the Pies so many years ago

Or Salem against the Swans last year?

Talk about contradicting yourself in the one post. Fairly typical of your posts I note.

So Spenc has been in good/ripping form for the past 5 weeks. Gawn has had one good game.

Toump has done everything asked of him. Had a blinder of a first half and had no influence in the second half. Previous weeks has played well. Riley has one good game and he's in by your logic.

Thank the lord you have nothing to do with drafting or trading. There's a reason why they preferred Spenc. I suggest you watch the game on Saturday night to find out why.

Cant argue with any of that. Grimes deserved a few consecutive games. I think what lets him down is his instinctive nature to look to go up the line (safety first/easiest option) and not look inside as a first option when coming off HB. This could be due to his inability to accurately hit targets by foot on a regular basis but im just speculating based on what ive seen in previous years. Hopefully he has addressed this part of his game.

I think the list building over the last 4 years has been much improved.

Salem,Toumpas,Brayshaw,Viney,Tommy and Hoges are players who dont like to lose a contest and are being nutured in the right way for the development of the list.

Dont think that the gravediggers in the group will be there forever and watch the improvement as the year unfolds.

We are definitely getting better and learning to stay over the pill for longer periods.

Some up's and downs with this list is understandable but not panic worthy.

Thank god we have so many "astute" coaches on this forum. Surely the powers to be should ignore the opinions of our "million dollar plus" coaching panel and listen to the experts here. You obviously attend all training sessions, team meetings reserve and senior games etc. I mean what is the point of playing our young players ......no point in seeing what they're made off ....just keep playing the guys that have been there for years and are not our future. Oh & can't wait till after the game when these players play and don't get BOG ......no time at the MFC unless they're A graders straight away. By the way.....my opinion to all you "keyboard coaches" I'm very happy to spend this season watching our younger players finish another season under Roos & Co.....see if they will develop and make it .....won't be calling for any heads until then.....but then of course ..what would I know ....no coaching credentials for me

I think Roos rates ANB...

Also in that article: “We’re monitoring [Jetta] and being really cautious, as to when we bring him back,” Roos said.

“He’ll probably start doing a little bit of competitive work over the next week to two weeks, so he’s probably two weeks away and then we’ll monitor him.”

Starting to wonder if we'll ever see Nev again.

rjay, I just compared Gawn & Sandilands at the same age (23)

Gawn leads in disposals marks goals and trails in hitouts.

Spencer V Sandilands at the same age (26) trails in everything but leads in tackles & hitouts!

At the same age (23) Gawn leads Spencer in everything except hitouts & tackles.

Don't know what that means other than ruckmen do take a while to come on.

Edit: The ages selected are based on the oldest age of the youngest player.

I hope Viv has improved. But his lazy attitude to defending has seen him cop a spray last year.

Quite worrying when he has been back in for a short time and dropped.

It's what he does when we dont have the pill that goes against him,and most supporters probably only see what he does when we have the ball.

You seem to have missed the point of Demonland, which is to enable fans to express a view - however wrong or right that may be - and shock, horror, some views may not be politically correct.

Perhaps change your name from Deestar3 to JustinKoschitzke because you have complete lack of awareness of what is around you.

Sorry, Rjay, but how the hell did you come up with that theory based on that article?

I would presume that he rates him - he did afterall have a say in his recruitment, but how you come to that conclusion from “Alex had played a couple of development games and played well on the weekend, so that was really encouraging,” has got me stuffed!

...and I hope Gawn comes on like Sandy but at the moment Spencer is the one in form at Casey. He has also had more opportunity playing as first ruck.

I think his selection is more to see how he performs and if he is a long term prospect. If he fails then I think it's important for big Max to take the first ruck spot and push for a senior berth.

That is rubbish

Watch last week and tell me what Grimes'opponent did. SFA is the answer. He is very stiff.

Really, if the coaching staff is serious about this year, Watts should have been dropped before Grimes or Jamar. I wonder what this does to team morale?

it is bizarre that Watts keeps getting a game. i agree bad for morale

How often has Roos commented on a kid at Casey who is yet to play a senior game? apart from Hogan I would say it's pretty rare.

I maybe drawing a long bow but I thought it was interesting for him to comment. Maybe he's taken to heart some comments on here about his lack of interest in Casey and restoring the balance...

Good headline to, maybe it's Mat that rates him.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
