"The story of how Stynes saved the Melbourne Football Club is much more than a sporting saga. Demolishing more than $4 million worth of debt was something the AFL initially believed beyond even him, but it was uniting the disenfranchised Demons that remains his most remarkable legacy" Caroline Wilson Age 7 May 2011.

The history of the Club under the leadership of the much-loved Jim Stynes and his successor Don McLardy is a difficult matter for all of us.

We all have a sense of sustained calamity. On the other hand, Jim and his colleagues stepped forward at a time of need, were motivated by the best of intentions and stuck to the task in the face of great and, in Jim's case, persobnal difficulty.

None of this should prevent the writing of the history of the Club accurately and faithfully over this period.

I think Todd's interview last night is a valuable contribution to this history. Most media commentators have to this day followed the Wilson myth that Jim "united the Club". This is a myth on 2 counts. Once the scars of the 2001 Board election had healed, there was no disunity at the Club. All this changed with Jim's election and the commencement of the period Todd referred to and lived through culminating in the events of 186. This period equated to the most sustained and destructive period of disunity at any Club in the modern era.

I was disappointed this aspect of his experience was not followed up and that his reference to the fractured club not expanded although the comment itself was chilling. I wondered if there was more in the interview that was edited out.

But the show was about Todd and his journey and to be honest it was one of the less interesting Mike interviews of which there have been some absolute rippers.

But I'd be fascinated with an insiders view of the role of Jimmy, Don, Garry, Chris, Barry, Cameron, Neale, Paul and Bails on our sad history over the last 10 years or so and Todd would tell it as straight as anyone would I reckon.

And the best way to achieve that is to move them on out of our club right??

I quite enjoyed the interview, nice to hear Mike reaffirm his allegiance to the Demons. Great to hear Todd reemphasize we are heading in the right direction with "good" people but we always anticipated the negative "noise".

Must say I also personally agree the Bails decision was the right decision ... sadly ... 100% agree it never an easy/nice thing to have to do. What is done is done - now we look forward in hope. Go Dees

I don't think it's possible for any one person to faithfully tell the story of our history over the past 10 - 15 years because history is something that different people tend to look at from different perspectives. The people you've named would no doubt all be able to give their own versions of some of the events and while TV could indeed tell it as straight as anyone, let's not forget that for much of that period he was away from the club having spent time with the Hawks and the Crows.

As far as I'm concerned, the best part of our recent sad history is the fact that it's history.

Gotta love Neita - one of footy's greatest philosophers.

Just another point re Lucas Cook - what if the 2010 draft had looked like this? ...

12 - Tom McDonald

33 - Jeremy Howe

50 - Troy Davis

53 - Lucas Cook

81 - Jordie McKenzie (promoted rookie)

96 - Jake Spencer (promoted rookie)

We'd almost certainly wear the late picks and be very happy with the first 2 picks (especially the first pick)

Spin :)

so play each game with 21?

I reckon most folks would think seasons end would be more strategic ;-)

Or I could have gone with we already are playing 21 (but that wouldn't be nice)

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
