    Anyone know when/If hogan has started talks on an extension yet? Surely we’d like that locked away before next year

    Pedo played his best football when Gawn went down without a doubt. AA form well...... some poetic licence there I am sure....

    I think people tend to forget the importance of Hogan's presence. Even when he's not playing well he still demands the oppositions best key back or even two. This allows Mcdonald the freedom to lead into other open spaces and gives small forwards the opportunity to be proactive knowing Jess is more likely to try to bring the ball to ground when he has two opponents. I don't mind if Jesse is having an off day not marking or finding the football as long as he makes a strong contest in the air and applies pressure around the ball in forward half thats all you can ask of him when he's not at his best.

    I know Jess has been down on form the past two weeks but if fit I think its key to keep improving our forward structures and keep the team playing together with that predictability and trust as well as continuity in our game. I think that's really important at this time of the season.

    Yep, Down on form, and probably sore.......but - he draws a key defender each week, can have a run in the midfiield, and I thought his sublime hanging over the top handball to Tracc with 30 seconds to go was pretty handy!!

    The next week against Footscray he had 18 disposals, 9 marks, and 4 goals.  He was very good.

    He's been poor the last 2 weeks.  But he's structurally important for the team.  If he's injured or sore he should be rested.

    He has not been "very poor for at least a month" as you assert.

    What about against Port? He plays well against weaker opposition and struggles and against better opposition, it’s been the case for a while.

    The better teams are often the ones with better structures and ability to stick a plan. If we could deliver it better into the forward line our forwards wouldnt be standing under it getting smashed by 2, 3 or even 4 defenders (geelong games)

    I see Hogan as a better mobile forward than full forward playing deep.

    He does not jump at the ball when flatfooted and he is not a great 1 grab mark both of which limit his effectiveness as a target man for long kicks inside 50.

    Skill set more suited using his endurance as a mobile high half forward.

    He wasn't great against Port, but he contributed and he has been pretty good in some other big games.  Against Port if our mids had lowered their eyes going inside 50 Hogan could have had a day out.  He's our top 3 quickest according to AFL tracker and we don't hit him up on the lead enough.  Our mids seem more comfortable kicking long to a contest and so he stays back too much.

Hogan is on track to kick 50 goals this season. The last 23 y.o. Demon to kick more than 50 in a season was David Neitz in 1996 (56), so it has been 22 years. Before that...

    For me it’s not just how many goals but who they come against and the times in games when they come.

    Agree with this, that’s why the idea of playing him deep against the Suns in a bid to get some cheap goals and get his confidence up is stupid. No he’s not going to get dropped, but he needs to work through this in the position that he is most dangerous to the opposition and valuable to the team.

    When gawn was down last year pedo played 7 games at an average of 18 possessions, 5.5 marks, 18.5 hitouts when he was rucking and kicked over a goal a game.

    He also polled 4 brownlow votes in 2017.  

     

    and Hogan is 6th, not 2nd.

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
