Two years to go on his contract. Will come out of contract as a restricted free agent. Freo have bigger fish to fry.

    He may not have to. I'm sure WC would pay whatever it takes to get him and there is avery strong argument to say WC are much closer to a flag than Freo playing in a winning GF team is one of Fyfe's key motivations.

    There are many players on the list (Harmes, Kent, JKH, Tom Mc, Petracca, etc.) that he is very close to and player relationships is one of the major reasons players don't go

    He's well aware of his importance to the team and would feel a real responsibility to help make a difference - it might be different if he was 26 and had already given plenty of service

    I point to other players who were chased by opposition clubs - apart from Cloke, there was no hesitation to go elsewhere.

    Why can't Hogan (who has an ability to speak, I hope) come out and say he's going to sign, but not until after a season of footy behind him?

    Pretty important decision, i reckon he is well within his rights to not be certain.

    I personally would not sign two years out, I think he is doing the right thing.

    Sure, I'd be happier if he did, but the fact his manager has stayed he won't break contract either is a sign that he isn't thinking of going right now.

    I think he will re-sign with us early next year for three years, after that he may go back home.

    Hogan cant predict the future so doesnt want to say something he might regret even if he is 99% sure.  fair enough i reckon

    I have been reading this thread throughout without contributing, but I feel the need to add my two-bobs-worth (apologies to young folk who have NFI what that expression means).

    Hogan has already extended his contract. He will be an MFC player for at least two more seasons in that time we will be inside the top eight.... IF we continue to improve at the rate we improved in 2015. I keep hearing that Hogan will stay if the team shows that sort of improvement (Finalists!)... that is where I would like to make an important observation/modification... Its not just about the team improving/imposing itself/increasing output ... the upward trend is very dependent on Hogan improving/imposing himself/increasing output. If Hogan kicks 65 goals this season we are going to be in the fight for the top eight at the business end. If he kicks 80 goals in 2017 we will be close to top four. If that happens Hogan will be saying "Where do I sign?". So the future for Hogan at the MFC is very much in Hogan's capable hands. If he doesn't rise to those levels the Team won't rise to those levels. To summarise... If Hogan is as good as we all think the future takes care of itself! Relax fellow Demons, sit back, belt up and enjoy the ride.

    When I do deals I usually resort to Chinese negotiating tactics and make them an offer they can't understand.

    He's not responsible for "the knots in your underpants".  You are. 

    As a sign of good faith Hogan extended 18 months ago, but seemingly that's not good enough for you.

    FFS, the guy has 2 seasons left on his contract and he's saying I'll negotiate at the end of this year.  Bloody reasonable if you ask me.

    Interesting that apparently 'others' out of contract are awaiting Hogan extending before resigning... McDonald and...?

    Because if Hogan said this his negotiating power is reduced to zero.  By saying 'I'm gonna sign on no matter what' he goes from potentially 1 million a year to a small fraction of that.  

    To negotiate a suitable long term contract, threre has to be an element of danger there- in this case, pay me what I'm worth on the market or I'll leave.

    Disappointed to hear The Ox say that Hogan probably wont be as good as Jonathan Brown or Nick Riewoldt.

    He's about the only person I've ever heard say that Hoges cant get to those heights. Most people would say hes a certainty to get to that level or better barring major injury.

    That's beyond absurd. You really think that any sporting club would willingly screw a star player who shows good faith? Hogan will always have the negotiating power, even if he verbally commits.

    Yeah, it's a bizarre claim from Schwarz. Hogan is frankly stellar and while i share the notion that 1.5m a year starts to look unbalancing on the list, if there's any player worth it it is Hogan.

    But Hogan is also taking a risk... what if by halfway through this season Weidemann has cleared his injury legacy, developed the fitness and is out and about providing a credible alternative? Would knock 250k off Hogan's maximum value. :)

    Of course, I think really Hogan would just be delighted to have a strong partner up forward and the two of them could settle into becoming the game's best combo.

    Remember the quotes pre-draft; "When Weideman went under the knife he was rated a top-three prospect on the rise — and little has changed."

    Players don't undertake the negotiation, managers do; if it was simply a matter of clubs giving out fantastic contracts, then threre'd be no need for managers or negotiation.

    And yes, if a club can sign a player for under market value, then it's a huge win for the club. A manager has to maximise their clients earning potential.  That doesn't mean threatening to leave, it simply means leaving it un-said.

    I reckon the club would have been relieved when Hogans manager postponed talks to avoid the season long conjecture.

    It's the next best thing to re-signing.

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
