I think brisbane are kinda happy Murph knocked back F/S to go in the draft.

Don't think so. Brisbane's 3rd round pick that year was Rhan Hooper. Murphy might not be much more than a solid B grader these days but I didn't see Rhan Hooper winning the ALFCA and Age footballer of the year in 2011.

I think the horse has bolted on Carlton trades, Murphy's value is dropping, probably same with Gibbs, Henderson is worth something;

They had the opportunity last year to trade for early picks or even get involved in the Boyd deal but had their heads so far up their....

I hope they do try and trade out some of their better players, it will be a huge mistake now, probably bigger than the ones we made.

He had one 'A' grade year, but hasn't come close since. I suspect his shoulder collision/injury effected his career.

I'm shocked though that he turns 29 next year. It seems like yesterday Brisbane were (unsuccessfully) wooing him under F/S. Where have the years gone ?

time waits for no man prodee.

too old for us, and carlton are going to want far too much for him.

the same goes for gibbs - he's just that little bit too old for our make-up, and carlton are going want too much for him.

to be honest the players on their list who do interest me are those i think they'll probably be most keen to retain:

menzel

buckley

cripps

yarran

henderson

everitt

tuohy

i think their list is in bad, bad shape.

Same draft year as Nathan Jones. Its obvious he never reached his full potential. Shoulder problems played a big part on that. I really thought he was going to be a star of the comp but he just never took that next step.

I also think Carlton stuffed up the captaincy by giving it to him instead of Kade Simpon who is one of the more courageous players in the comp and gives his all right to the end. Murphy just doesn't know how to influence a game while being a captain.

What am I bid for this 1987 VL Commodore, 300,000km with dodgy clutch in faded blue?

Shame Sam Blease has gone, that would be a fair swap.

Agree, Simpson was an obvious choice as captain...

Murphy's predicament reminds me a lot of Trengove

High draft picks

Great footy (for age) until cruelled by injury

Divided club management

Poor coaches

Poor developement

Non-performing team

Club culture ruined by 'tanking'.

On top of that they get the captaincy when not ready for it.

Set-up to fail situation, really.

Feel sorry for the kid, he has to play and captain another 20 games with the speculation that he is trade bait.

And Tex was an obvious choice at Adelaide? And Jones wasn't an obvious choice because he surfed too much.

Why, why, why do people think they know who should and shouldn't be captain of a club?

In regards to Murphy, I think he was a victim of Carlton getting Judd. I'm not sure how, but I'll come up with something. I just continually tell my Carlton-supporting associates that getting Judd was a big mistake. Has set them back massively, and I love every bloody second of it. That said, it's amazing how those supporters still expect Carlton to win every game, right up until their last game of the season. I have never heard any of them "hope" they get within "x" amount of points to a team, regardless of how shite they are going.

He is actually 27 not 29. If he was an UFA I would go for him but not for a trade.

That still makes him 29 next year, born in July.

So Ethan I think that means he is 27.

Carlton would ask for Jesse hogan or Dom Tyson and we would have a good laugh, both boys under 40 games are going to be so much better

Easy to justify: getting Judd set the expectation that Murphy would escape tags and thus become a super productive high disposal, high efficiency footballer, as would Gibbs.

Fact remains teams are primarily happy to let Judd go tag-free and focus on Murphy and Gibbs as - because of the inside role Judd has played at Carlton - they can't handle it the way Judd can, and continues to do.

Murphy reminds me of McLean - I think his afl career won't last as long as you'd expect, due to a lack of speed and injuries catching up with him. Better skills than Chook, but not by as much as you'd expect.

I think there were other players that could've achieved the same desired outcome as what they wanted from Judd. Problem with Judd in your team is that he is a freak, and can win a game on his own. Meant that when the game was there to be won, the other players knew Judd could rise, and often he did, so they didn't have to rise as much. It's probably a bit like Ablett and the GC kids.

...because with all their inside knowledge clubs often get it wrong. Our club got it badly wrong as have Carlton, Murphy would be better with the pressure off and Simpson seems (admittedly from the outside looking in) the heart and soul of the team as Jones has been for us.

Agree with you on Judd, and we know all about the messiah complex. I think they are doing the same with Silvagni, all the talk about how he built the GWS list is laughable. How many picks did they get? you would have to be a moron to get that one wrong.

How do you know we got it "badly" wrong? I'm presuming you are talking about the Trengove and Grimes appointment? Who else should've been made captain? And let's not forget that the players got a say in who they wanted captain back when that decision was made. Would you prefer the club to run a vote with the members to see who they want, then reward it based on those results? Of course in hindsight, Jones should've been selected instead of Trengove, but gee, there's equally as many people on here that were against Jones being named captain.

I think where a lot of people are mistaken is that they think that the best player should be captain. Often they are, but there are a number of examples of premiership winning teams, especially in recent years, where that wasn't the case. Geelong/Harley, Geelong/Ling, Collingwood/Maxwell, Hawthorn/Mitchell.

I do agree, I think Carlton got it wrong with Murphy, I thought Carrazzo was the best candidate, but how the hell would I know? I definitely won't be making definitive statements about it though. It's just my opinion, but the people inside the club would know the true answer (not that you would hear about it if it was a wrong decision!).

You're arguing for the sake of it 'billy', we got it badly wrong.

Hindsight is a wonderful way to make decisions I know but what it does prove is the club with all their inside information made a mistake.

I agree that Murphy is a bit old. Will be 29 next year, has had injuries, probably wouldn't play past 32, that is 3 years of service, probably tops.

I would go with Gibbs, will be 27 next year, hasn't had as many injury problems.

Yes, good point GRRM. But don't want Murph at Melbourne next year either.

Actually, you're arguing for the sake of it. It's a topic that you are calling black and white, and I'm saying it's anything but.

You believe Carlton made a mistake by making Murphy captain - what's this based on? Why would making Simpson captain be the right decision? You have NFI, which is/was my original point.

Trengove in particular, could've been a bloody good captain. He was at a stage in his career where he could take that step up and be a very good player, and by all reports, had training standards that were at the highest at the club, which was a big thing we were looking for at the time. I actually think he captained very well in the short time he was playing - Neeld had a huge emphasis on defence, and Trengove led by example, to some degree sacrificing his own game, to show his teammates what was expected. Obviously his injury didn't help.

When the time comes for a team to select a captain, there are many variables that we don't know about, and many qualities the players have that we are not privy to. We are in no position to judge if a club made a wrong decision, and taking easy pot shots at the past, like what you are doing, is disappointing.

Just for my entertainment, tell me who you think should've been captain when J&J were appointed. I can assure you, on here there weren't too many that wanted Jones, and there were a heck of a lot more that wanted Moloney.

Silvagni has been brought back to help this area, decision made last year for this to happen, they brought in Jaksch. & some other kids.

they will be into Shiel for sure. & other GWS players.

Henderson, I believe from a Melbourne following family is up for contract this season & has just put off contract negotiations temporarily.

can we leverage Henderson from them, they are in for years of rebuild.

KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy.
