I'm just saying, just because a player gets a RS nomination, doesn't mean they will turn out to be a spud (which is how the post read).

For the record, I place absolutely no currency (other than whatever financial reward the actual winner gets) on the whole Rising Star hoo-ha. The actual WINNER usually goes on to have a good career, but as we all know, one nomination does not a career make.

And the consistency argument is an aberation from when the award was first established. It should have nothing to do with consistency. Its about a future star, not who has had the best first year.

According to the bookies Hogan is 2nd favourite at $3.25 behind McCarthy at $3.00. 3rd Patrick Cribbs $5.50 and then Matt Crouch $13.

Its my belief Hogan's consistency (if continued) will get him over the line. Best they hurry up and nominate him.

He is giving good backman headaches. There are some teams we are yet to play with some holes in their backline that will struggle to contain hulk. He should take out the rising star award if he continues his current form. Contested marking machine.

I get why the panel are seduced by the best first year player theme but its not what the award was established for. And from what you are saying if a player play1 game, a blinder in roudn 23, and is nominated he can't win the award. That is a joke. A player that is nominated in any round should be able to win. And a player who is not nominated (say Gary Ablett Jnr, Dane Swan etc) should also be able to win.

The award needs a total revamp.

McCarthy has been excellent and was excellent again on the weekend against the crows who are a good team.

When does McCarthy cop the opposition's best key defender ? Answer, never. Not once. The opposition put the most work into Cameron. Hogan isn't a foil for anyone. He's the man.

I like McCarthy and don't begrudge him the nod, but Hogan beats McCarthy in just about every relevant stat except goals per game. Hogan has more disposals, more marks, more contested marks, and the same average marks inside 50. All while copping the best defender and playing for the team with the least inside 50's in the league.

Even on the weekend it was 21 disposals to 12, 9 marks to 6 and 3 goals to 4.

Not to mention he splits packs and creates goals for teammates. One is a power forward, the other isn't.

It's no major issue, but there's a flaw in the award when the best 20 year old and under in the competition hasn't been recognised.

Yes but that's not what it was when it was established. Its what it has morphed in to. And in effect there are only 8 players that can win it. Those nominated in the first 8 rounds.

I was tossing up between hogan and petracca at start of year(before petracca did his knee) I ended up placing $50 on hogan at $12 still early days but looking good, will jump on petracca for next years award

McCarthy - 12 disposals (5 contested, 75% DE), 6 marks (1 contested), 1 tackle, 2 inside 50s, 4 goals 1, 1 goal assist (on Cheney)

The system is flawed.

The nominations don't allow for a good player to be awarded if he is not nominated.

History shows that if you are not nominated before round 8 you have buckley's of winning (only 3 have won outside that). Getting nominated in rd 22 is almost impossible to win.

It USED (original concept) to be an award that awarded a player who was going to be a bona fide star. Now it is simply a 'best first year player' award with number of games and consistency etc being the major factors.

Its a crap award and I am happy if no melbourne player get nominated. Our history of it isn't great (Gysberts nominated twice, Morton etc etc) It simply means their contract value goes up, they think they have made it as a football player potentially and other clubs start sniffing around to get them. No benefit whatsoever to the club.
