I have seen it - don't patronise me because I can see the merits in keeping Colin Garland in the backline.

That's what we are talking about here. Nathan Jones will be next on your list wouldn't he?

Nathan Jones is the one player on our list who has astonishingly enough come through without being affected.

Of course he is not next on the list. The bloke has improved his game every single year, his development and desire to succeed and see the club succeed has been the only beacon of light through this entire nightmare. He is our Captian.

I don't know why you're bringing him up. He stands alone. He is the outlier.

What are the merits of keeping Garland from a 'list needs' point of view then?

What, (other than your fondness of the guy on a human level) do you see that he provides our backline that someone like Frost can't provide?

With the understanding that we are the worst 'kicking' side in the AFL especially coming out of our defence and that the pick we'd obtain from him would be further ammunition to add to the needs of our list, what is he offering the club that outweighs the potential of the pick we'd be receiving?

We just beat Geelong in Geelong fcs! Garland wasn't there!

Being a '125 game MFC servant' isn't a valid answer btw.

I don't remember Frawley playing a single game for Casey last year and I'm sure you'll agree that we haven't missed him this year? Our team seems to be doing better with him gone in fact.. But he was considered best 22 every week last year wasn't he? So really, it's a non-argument.

As for the 'logic'. I can see that it makes sense to you. You regard Colin as one of our 'better' players and I'm pretty sure you held Frawley in that category too. I'm not so sure everyone working at the MFC would agree with you and your definition of better.

Your logic seems simple enough RPFC, but what yourself and Nasher and plenty of others seem to be missing is the magnitude of failure the club has been subject to. We are talking about a failed football club trying to completely rebuild itself.

It's not as if we made the finals a couple of years ago and we're bottoming out a bit. We have been sub-standard within every inch of the club and the list has suffered hugely because of it. Leadership, development of players, elite environment, drafting of players and personalities etc . These things have been completely non-existent at our club.

Do supporters consistently miss this?

We are unique. No club has been through what we have. And therefore the list has suffered immeasurably! Which is why we've broken all sorts of losing records over the past 6-7 years.

Colin Garland is absolutely without a doubt a player who's form, (like others previous) has been all over the place. You say he's had a consistent season to date, and I agree. Roos says so too. He is playing a role and has played it well.

Given he's one of the longest serving MFC players on our list, you'd think he'd be offering some sort of leadership. But he hasn't. He's not even in the leadership group and that speaks volumes to me.

Why do you think we've brought in players like Cross and Vince? And why is it that they're two players who have had the biggest impact on our list and not players like Garland?

Frawley was consistent in his form last year. So far as to say he 'played his role'. (..*Shudders*..).

There's a process the MFC are taking and need to continue to take. Rejuvenation and Regeneration. Players like Garland play a role yes. But they are not going to change the face of the club. They are merely passengers now and I have a feeling that him, Howe and Jamar will all be gone by the end of the season.

I really like Garlo. He is a long serving player who consistently and capably plays his role, but perhaps to a lesser extent when the 'chips' are really 'down'. I think his record shows that he is not a player who will turn, or even slow the 'tide', when momentum is running hard against us. Further, he seems not have the leadership qualities that we probably should expect from a senior player in a young team (confirmed by his fairly recent demotion from the leadership group). I generally think loyalty is a very important quality, but (sadly) it now belongs more to a bygone era in the AFL. Unfortunately, we need to keep pace with this trend, or we will fall by the wayside. I would argue that our Footy Dept. should make what it deems as a reasonable offer to Garlo given what he brings to the team ......... and that offer may well be less than what he currently earns. I certainly would not 'up the anti' to keep him on our list. Tough but realistic call imo.

I'm enjoying these discussions on the last two pages guys keep it up. I think that Frost is superior to Garland physically, but i think his skill with ball in hand is poorer and maybe his decision making (hard to say with limited ball in hand time - with more game time and practice this may improve). But i am super excited for his size/speed and aggression in the backline next year. His age also fits in well with McDonald too.

I think some of you are trying to brace yourself for the dissapointment of him leaving but I personally think he will stay and really want him to stay.

Garland offers a versatility that others cannot provide (eg Frost) so when we play a team with a small fwd line, we can cope. he can tag when needed, eg help out on ablett. Offers good rebound and uses the ball well. I believe he will really flourish further as we improve.

He is a team man through and through. even played at CHF for half a year when asked and did ok

And not every player needs to be a leader, some are not born to do it. you need some leaders and some solid contributors and he is certainly the latter.

As I said - I like Garland's flexibility - he can play on anyone minus the person that Nev Jet would get to play on. He doesn't look 'mentally scarred or hampered' and seems to have a pretty good relationship with Roos judging from the words that come out of his mouth and the embrace he gave him after 'the win he didn't play in.'

And that doesn't tell me we don't need him, anymore that it tells me Hogan is surplus to requirements because he also didn't play...

McDonald, Jetta, and Dunn form the nucleus of our backline at the minute and Frost has not done enough to convince me he will be able to play the role that Garland has been capable of playing. Salem is a lock when he comes back too. Outside of those four, we have Lumumba - who plays up the ground more than Colin does, and a whole lot of kids and NQRs with Howe heading back to the spot he wants to play in - the forward line.

And Nathan Jones has gotten the most out of himself at a club where that was difficult to do, I am happy for Colin Garland because he did the same, battled through some injuries as well, and emerged through that river of [censored] clean on the other side.

Ultimately, Roos and co. will do what they want but it is not as straight forward as you make it seem.

I think Garland is the footballer, Frost at this stage the raw athlete. I also don't see them as like for like and/or competing for the same position.

Garland is a good player and as Roos has said he's been our most consistent this year, hardly someone crushed by his environment.

I think we need to keep our better experienced players now. We've had to trade in to fill a void adding the likes of Vince and Cross but now with Garland and Jones moving into the over 25 yo age group it's critical we keep them.

We can then look at adding quality in the under 25'ers and the draft to really build a successful team going forward.

Does this sound optimistic for Pedo: Cameron Pedersen: Pedos season has finished, due to injury, which is really disappointing. He played a couple of important games and really good games, but unfortunately were not going to see him for the rest of the year.

I was waiting for Roos to say a good rest and he'll be ready for next season.

I'd imagine that remaining time on contract is one of the first talking points by management when a player receives a season ending injury; it would dictate the recovery plan Misson implements. If he's specifically talked about the plan to get Pedo back into pre-season and ready for next year, he wouldn't be saying it without consulting with Mahoney and Roos.

Either way, I'd be staggered beyond belief if he's let go. He provides more than Dawes (for starters, he can actually mark).

There are a few clubs looking for a ruckman. Carlton don't have much besides Kreuzer and he's always injured. Geelongs rucks are always injured and there really isn't anyone backing up Goldstein/Jacobs either.

The great thing about this is that most of our high end talent will be locked away for at least 2 or 3 years.

That asterisk next to Tyson means I couldn't find confirmation - but it made sense that it was a 3 year deal.
