It will be interesting to see next year with Watts coming out of contract, if they will be in a hurry to re-sign him. I mean during this trade period the club put him out there and no one was interested. I can't see them being in a hurry.

pretty sure michie contracted until 2016

I believe his player sponsor informed me he was OOC in 2015. I initially had him OOC in 2016.

Assuming Lovett makes it to the Rookie List, we upgrade Harmes and delist Hunt to do so.

King and White on our the 4 man RL and Smith on his own on a separate list.

If we re-rookie Hunt, and rookie Lovett we will have a full rookie list.

Our first 4 picks in the draft have their spots but I would use our ND82 in lieu of Terlich, as it would end up being ~61st 'live' pick.

Interesting to see what happens.

So as we are seeing this week there is still room to move on AFL club lists and some players who couldn't find homes in trade week are now deleted free agents (DFA). It was noted today that Jamar is still to declare his hand and may nominate as a DFA. I wonder if there is still movement on the MFC list as Harmes, Michie and Hunt are still OOC. Wasn't it around this time last year that Barry announced his retirement, as did Evans with 1 year still on his contract. Thus freeing up 2 spaces? I cannot see us going to the draft with 4 picks and 1 rookie and is it possible that there will be an exchange of rookie spots or an existing contracted player will be delisted and the re rookied? The club has continued to surprise us is there more to come???

Posted

I would like to keep Michie as i thought he was starting to show something towards the end. But i have a feeling he actually might get delisted..

You do have to shake your head though that they gave Dean Terlich a 2 year deal off the back of an ordinary year last year and then to play 0 games makes it even worse. I wonder whether they will pay him out Michael Evans style because there honestly no hope of him getting a game next year at all especially with Bugg and Melksham brought in to play off a half back.

Posted

still a chance they might buy out m.jones or terlich. i'd go terlich myself

At least Jones played games - Terlich didn't.

I would struggle to see the point in keeping him for 2016 if you didn't use for 2015...

With Hunt and Harmes resigning. I am not certain with Michie's status, but right now we don't have a spot for ND50 - which will end up being the ~39th live pick.

Maybe Terlich will be either gone or downgraded and we pay out his contract.

Well, there is definitely at least 1 deletion to come.

Why is that?

We could simply re-sign Michie and go to the draft with three live picks?

I think though, the way it is shaping, I wouldn't be surprised if one of Michie or Terlich are moved on. And I feel that Michie offers more.

Interesting that we have a large contingent out of contact next year now. And better still, when i look at the names, I feel like after next season draft and trade, we should have a fully competitive AFL list. We will be, for the first time in 20 years, be deadwood free and ready to build a list for a premiership. That will be the Roos legacy; a platform on which to build and a clean slate for Goodwin.

That was always the stated intention and why I am usually puzzled by the people who question the 3 years he is on for and the so called lack of improvement on the field, especially when we have clearly improved (we have gone from a second grade VFL side to a bottom to mid range AFL side in 2 years!)

Kind of answered your own question there - I understand this is a shallow draft but Terlich didn't play last year at all as a 25 year old and we had injuries, and we have recruited more players in his role...

Now I know this is a shallow draft but surely live pick 39 is worth more than another year of the nothing we got out of Terlich...

With Hunt and Harmes both signing, I can't see a case for keeping Terlich now, for the reasons rpfc outlined. Making a mistake in the past (2 years for Terlich) is not a reason to make another mistake (keeping a player we see no future in on the list). Michie is the better player - that's the only thing that matters IMO.

I disagree that its the only thing that matters. I think contracts matter. If we want players to fulfill their contracts, we should fulfill ours. How would we feel if Hogan decided not stay for 2017? Ignoring the disparity in talent, that's the equivalent position to Terlich, but from the players' side. If the clubs (not just ours) want and expect players to fulfill contracts, then clubs need to do so as well.

On the plus side, if it comes down to a choice between keeping Terlich because he has a contract or Michie because he doesn't, it's really only a decision at the margin. Michie might be a better prospect than Terlich, but not by that much that the team's on field performance will change significantly.

The club would fulfill it's part in the contract by paying him out. The clubs part is to pay, not to have you on the list or to give you games, the players part is to play when asked, it is hard for the players to do this if they walk and play for another club so the two things are different.

Look, it isn't great to nix contracts with a year to go but a mistake is not fixed by another mistake - if Terlich is not in the 40 players you want on your PL - you should honour the contracts of the other 39 or 38 by going into 2016 with your best list that you can possibly get.

Footy is tough and good clubs rarely 'pay players out' but we are coming from a long way back and to only have Evans and Terlich as players we have paid out a year early is a decent effort considering our list a few years ago...

Why on earth would we give Hunt another year on the senior list? He has done nothing at all to date to suggest he will be an AFL player.

Three years is what we gave Toumpas to prove himself, and he showed a million times more promise in that time than Hunt has.

Really disappointed that the club has not come out and justified the Terlich contract either given that one year contracts are in vogue at present. Why was Dean given two years on the back of an underwhelming 2014 season? How many memberships are covering the cost of his contract?

PS. I actually like Terlich as a player, but I'm not sure why he was contracted for two years when the coach doesn't rate him.

Hunt was likely given another year due to the fact that a) he showed some decent form towards the end of the season in the VFL and b) his first two seasons were largely interrupted by injury.

Also keep in mind that he has shown that he had the ability to match it with the top performers in his draft in his younger years but fell behind when they all grew and he didn't. Now that he's starting to put on some size, I'm more than happy for the club to give him another season to prove himself.

In preparation for the ND, it has been updated.

Now, we have 10 days to decide whether to nominate Lovett - which will make it harder to not delist someone if we want to 'meet' any bid during the ND.

If a bid comes during the ND, we have to put Lovett on the Primary List if we want to meet that bid. If he makes it through (and through the PSD I believe - we can rookie list him).

So if we wanted to take him, I can see why we have not delisted Terlich - we may not want to take Lovett in the ND, nor will we have to if he doesn't get bid upon.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
