James Harmes

After watching Roosy's presser, I'm pretty confident he won't play this week.

You must have watched that through your crystal ball to be confident. I wouldn't draw any confident conclusion from that. But I'd be prepared to weakly guess that he will play and Roos is trying to keep EFC guessing without telling a whopping lie, since everyone knows that once a rookie is promoted they usually play immediately.

That has been the trend.

Harmes says his Demons allegiance runs deep.

"My two pops went for Melbourne and my mum and dad also," he said.

He says the day he pulls on the famous Melbourne jumper will be special.

So I doubt his father was Wayne Harmes (bicbw)

Yes...I stand corrected. Maybe some sort of uncle?

But regardless a few "special goal assists" like Wayne's famous one would be good to see.

There has been instances where rookies have been promoted but not selected - James Magner under Neil Craig rings a bell. It usually is the case though, otherwise there's not much point in promoting him unless there's an administrative reason to do so that I'm not aware of.

I'm pretty sure that Wayne Harmes is related to Norm Smith, so there may be a reason for the family supporting Melbourne.

Tom Couch was another beauty. Got promoted at the start of the year and didn't debut until the middle of the year after about 7 BOGs in a row performance at VFL level.

Then unfortunately didn't do much at AFL level :(

Maybe they are dangling the carrot in front of him, there are enough LTI's that there is space to do so.

Or maybe he is next cab off the rank if Brayshaw or some others don't pull up.

Or maybe he is playing.

We will soon find out.

Really pleased for him. It seems from all reports that he's gone up a gear in the last month or two, so it's a great reward.

Hopefully he gets picked now. Can't imagine what it would be like to pull on a MFC jumper as a life long fan.

Agree completely. Everything I've heard from those inside the Club is that he's a great listener, and works extremely hard on any aspects of his game that require attention. That's a great attitude to have, and I'm thrilled for the kid ...... even more so given that he's been a Demon from birth.

Lets hope that he is a super fierce tackler - then he could really earn the nickname GB.

Was it Wayne Harmes that was Norm Smith's nephew? I seem to remember something like that, but I may have the wrong player.

Sorry mo64, just saw your post and you beat me to it.

GB for Grievous Bodily or Gus Brayshaw? :)

WOW. His excitement is jumping off the page!

Really liked this:

Harmes said Bernie Vince and Nathan Jones had taken him under his wing.

“From day one, Jonesy was getting around me, so probably those two boys [have had the biggest influence on me],” he said.

Comments like these (and that by Vand about Cross) show how good our leadership is now. Our senior guys are really mentoring the young guys as much as our coaches are developing their skills. At last we are becoming a professional club.

Will Gus Rigoni present his jumper I wonder.

Only if his cousin Guy is unavailable.

I thought his nickname was Gus, I did know his name was Guy.

I'm usually only pedantic about apostrophes but I remember him as Guy.

But you may be right about the nickname.

I thought his nickname was Gus, I did know his name was Guy.

Correct.

I don't think I've ever seen as big a smile as the one on Harmes' face in his interview with Burgs!! Rapt for the kid, real dream come true kind of stuff.

Go get em son!

Just a little story on Harmes I just wanna share a story on how quality of a person this young kid is.

'Chomp' comes up to Yarra every summer and this year he spent new years there. Old man is a taxi driver so they got talking about footy and without harms mentioning anything about being an AFL player dad said he barracked for the Dees, when in turn James mentioned he was a rookie list player. Dad being a passionate supporter was pumped and they got talking for a while about footy etc.. When dad had to drop him off he managed to get a selfie with Chomp and he turned around and offered his support to my younger brother who is playing for under 15s Vic Country this year by giving dad his number! Chomp then offered to ring me little brother and say g'day to which he was little star struck given he is only 14 years old.. Harmes offered some handy advise and tips and wished him all the best. Dad said he was by far the best 18 year old he has dealt with being such a mature kid for his age and the way he has gone out of his way to keep in touch with my little brother. There was no arrogance or cockiness just a down to earth kid who was just as pumped to meet another demon supporter.

Dad sent an email to the footy club complimenting on what a terrific young kid he was and the way he had gone out his way to do what he has done for my little brother. Dad mentioned that he wanted this email to go straight to Paul Roos and Peter Jackson. Dads already promised him free taxi rides Lol

Against Sydney this year Chomp got free tickets for my family and even a chance to get them into the rooms. My family have now become good friends with James and when I rang my dad before, him and my little brother were fist pumping and shouting with excitement. So the Harmes selection is a bit closer to heart then usual.

The kid is a ripper and I am absolutely stoked for Harmesy to be living his dream because I know for a fact just how hard he has had to work for it and what he has gone through.

Good luck Chomp!!

Great story DD.

And hope your brother's going well with his footy development in the under age program.

So does anyone know if he's actually related to Wayne Harmes? Not that it makes a huge difference, but it would be interesting to know.

I'm absolutely thrilled for the kid to get the nod this week. Hes a classic example of someone earning his spot by putting together such a great run of form in the reserves that they can't leave him out anymore. He's worked his guts out at Casey and had some amazing results. I'll be there cheering him on with my dad this weekend.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
