You would hope that we respectfully offer Jones fair market value. Being exploited for your loyalty leaves a bad taste in the mouth and is a real culture killer.

i'm not disagreeing with you, but there would be a lot of hawks and swans players not paid fair market value and their culture seems strong

My suggestion - pay everyone else what they are worth. That should leave us comfortably under the salary cap.

Then pay the rest to Jones as a re-signing bonus

I think you're on to something here GTB contracts on base level for all including Jones with performance bonus based on this years requirement to get him to resign for 3 yearsand past performance.to balance of salary cap.

This allows us to recognise his considerable value to the club but signals other players that they must perform to get a larger salary than base.

If they do perform and we make progress next contract with Jones we may agree that we cant afford him or he may agree that he has been well rewarded financially and will be better rewarded with a flag.

You do understand that Jones is a player as opposed to us being supporters (redundant question).

I fully understand players supporting other players irrespective of how we see it. Players are professional footballers and no matter how much we want them to think "club first" it is their livelihood and they will always more understanding about the trials and tribulations of their fellow players than we will. We write players off the minute they leave the club - players don't do that to fellow players. You only have to look at what I think was Josh Gibson wedding on the weekend with Buddy partying up with his ex team mates.

I've grown to really admire Jones over his career. His improvement these last few years, in his football and leadership commands a decent sized contract. We've got to pay someone the big bucks, and Jones is it.

He'll sign soon enough.

Any player who now goes into a contract negotiation should say "Tom Boyd's getting $7 million".

Not saying Jones should get that much, just that Boyd's contract re-aligns what players can now demand.

Jones is worth what any club would pay to take him. We need to make sure our offer is no different.

The big point of difference here is that Boyd is a KF prospect. KPPs are always more highly sought after as a commodity, than a dime a dozen midfielder. I love the way Jonesy plays, but the position he plays in has to be factored into the contract, as does the captaincy mind you.

i'm not so sure he will attract big overs offers from other clubs, purely because he is a midfielder and they are a common commodity

i don't put him in the mould of a judd, ablett or dangerfield who would be exceptions

the fa's who attract the real overs are those who can fill strategic roles where there are not many of their type

i don't think mfc need to pay overs here, just a fair evaluation of his worth

I'm staggered MFC is even debating this! We have plenty of cap room in 2015 so front end it!!

The average payment with a $10m cap is $250K. I could give payment patterns to show the cap is not an issue going forward. Suffice to say there will always be new low paid players to offset valuable high paid players and the cap will automatically go up over time.

On the contract 'term'. He will be 27 next Jan. 4+1 years takes him to 32 in his last year. So 5 years seems a very small risk to the club.

Jonesy will (rightly IMO) be mighty peeved if he has to accept high 500's so we can get a 'star FA' @ $1m for 5-7 years. I wouldn't blame Jonesy for walking away - Crikey he does all the hard yards just so some FA comes along and collects. No way Jose! If we think that Jonesy can't get more than the high 500's + 5 years somewhere else we are kidding ourselves. eg. GCS would take him in a heartbeat to support young midfield (Ablett will be 32 in 2016). Plenty of surfing up there!

Lets remember, if Jonesy walks next year and we get a 'star FA' there will be NO FA compo pick for Jonesy!! The FA's more than offset.
