that Sam Blease goal followed by the JKH goal straight out of the resulting centre bounce was the best bit of footy ive seen from the MFC in a long time

In an acceptance that the way I look at football has seriously changed I was more excited by Rileys massive tackle on Wines. Agree both goals were great to watch though.

I don't particularly care how easily they kick the ball around in their back half, as long as they can't kick it easily past centre and inside 50.

Players properly covering the corridor can easily then move over to the other side of the ground, even if the opposition have six kicks to get it down there.

Too many times we let the player with the ball run down the ground with no one stopping them while other players flood back into a defensive spot.

This tactic lets the player with the ball get closer to the forward zone before he releases. He is under no pressure and can kick to a position as he is well balanced and has had plenty of opportunity to assess options.

Quite often this kick is to a space that the receiver is running into with an opponent a couple of paces behind

I saw North and Carlton play on Friday and they treated this play totally differently. Carlton released a player by providing a moving sheperd and maybe our tactic avoids this but even then they did not get deep into the forward zone without having pressure applied

Anyway not sure if that clearly explains it but it was frustrating to watch and I hope our coach and players are satisfied that what they are doing is effective. There has certainly been improvement this year so I am pleased with that.

Re watched the game... I cannot believe how many times we kicked to a 1 vs 2/3/4 port players. Really poor options that cost us going forward when we had them on the ropes.

On the upside you can really see the Improvement and the pressure we put them under was fantastic all bar 20 mins.

Well, I finally got around to watching that game and I have to get something off my chest. I can't believe the selfish play I saw from the two captains. Obviously everyone has already mentioned Jones taking the advantage and running himself into trouble when we needed him to show leadership and settle the play down, but I haven't seen any mention of Grimes' role in the HB call on Jack Viney. With Viney clearly first man to the ball and Grimes running in alongside his own man, did he put on any sort of block or bump to allow his younger teammate a little room and time to take the ball and move it on? HELL NO. He peeled off his man and ran past looking for a handball and a cheap stat, leaving Viney to cop the contact and ultimately costing us a free kick on the PA HFF. What should have been the most basic play to put a bit of body on his man and take him out of the contest became a 1 vs 2 win for the opposition because he wasn't willing to do the team thing and play for someone else to get the ball. That is not leadership. I was furious when I saw it last night and I'm equally [censored] off right now writing about it. That was as poor an effort as I have seen this year, both as a player and a leader. Pathetic.

Having got the rant off my chest, there was actually quite a bit to like about the game overall.

I thought Tappy produced the best minute of his football career and in general was pretty solid. He should be spending most of his time forward in my opinion.

Blease gave us a bit in attack and much to my amazement actually put in defensively.

JKH was back and looking good.

Jetta was superb. Some of his evasive work was insane to watch, just the awareness and agility to avoid tackles until he could dish off.

Tyson still ogt caught a couple of times, but it was a very handy game.

Riley looks like he could be a real find once he gets back to full fitness. He really has slotted in nicely.

Kent really threw himself in as the substitute. I've seen a lot of people say he should have played the whole game, but I'm not sure I agree. He was ideal in that role where his burst of speed and attack on the ball wrought havoc and created a lot of opportunities when we needed them.

Probably more I could throw out, but I just got back from work and it was late when I watched it last night. The point is that we looked like a decent side last night. Our tall forwards were average, but we had a rock solid defence, we did well in clearances, we had a few quick players in there to break lines and create, and they all worked as advertised. It was actually a good game from us, we just failed to finish it off (again). A little more composure and awareness and we'd have added Port to the list of scalps this year.

I didn't think THAT spoil on Dangerfield when we won against Adelaide over there was leadership - it was just an illustration of his talent and commitment.

disagree, he is side-by-side at best, a long way off the ball, he would probably have just ended up being clearly 3rd to the contest if he had tried a block.. yes he was 3rd anyway but he made the decision to keep it a dead heat for all 3 players, in which we would outnumber 2-1, which was the right call. Unfortunately it was a spectacular tackle, otherwise it would have worked out for us as Grimes would have ran off with the ball that spilt from the tackle.. and it should have been ball up anyway

seriously, the way they have ruined the rules, what Viney should have done is exactly what he did with one minor alteration, dont actually take control of the ball, but let it bounce of your palms instead.. run bend down and scoop just as he did, but 'accidentally' don't take possession and get tackled - there was such a fraction of a second between when he touches the ball to when the opposition gets him that there is no way he would appreciate that clean possession hasn't been taken and he would lay the tackle and TWEET 'holding the man'. I know that type of rule-fiddling is deplorable but that is what they have reduced us to. They no longer protect the man with the ball so don't be the man with the ball and you have a better chance

i bet that's what were gonna start seeing now, players taking a couple of short steps and/or deliberately fumbling to make sure they are second to the contest and/or not in possession because that's the advanatageous position to be in now

we should have won it mate! Free kick against Watts cost us a goal after the 3qtr time siren! Pathetic decision! Grimes under zero pressure missed Tyson alone on the wing! Kicked it on the full with 80 seconds left! Should have rolled those pr1cks on their home turf!

It is exciting though. Deadset 10 wins next year I am convinced
