Anyone else want to buy the notion that we need outside run as opposed to inside grunt need look no further than todays contested footy and first use count till half time! We are getting killed!

So once and for all this should send a reality check to all you posters out there that think that we need outside run as opposed to INSIDE MID GRUNT! as our first recruiting priority!

So as I was saying spend our first two picks on that need, THEN maybe look at Billy Stretch to appease that outside need as a third round pick.

The other startling need is for a key Forward and as I have said throw a package to Richmond for Riewoldt which they cannot refuse!

Till half time this display has been diabolical!

Why not both? A player need not be one or the other, they can in fact be able to win their own ball and run well on the outside depending on the situation. Our problem is that for the last six or seven years we've been recruiting players who only have one of these traits when there were plenty out there with both. Even better would be to forget all about the perceived traits of the players and just recruit the best footballers, but that notion hasn't been in fashion since the 90s.

I agree with the overwhelming majority that totally disagree with the OP. It was Geelong's outside run that killed us far more than their inside work. Geelong got outside us, ran hard and used the ball well.

We lack speed and class.

I'd take one more inside mid (if they were a tall inside mid) but I'd rather focus our efforts on midfielders that can get outside and use the footy.

I don't like the idea of mutually exclusive inside and outside mids. I want players who go hard when they have to, can get there own ball, make good decisions, know how to play footy and dispose of the ball well.

Selwood killed us when the game was there to be won, good hard tough inside footy and hard running outside footy set the game up. Hardly the quickest going around but it doesn't matter if you know how to play the game.

we have messed up a lot, I always wonder if blokes like Strauss, Blease, Tapscott and co would have developed differently at another club and been very good players

we have a habit of going for skilled clean running players with little mongrel, at Melbourne. and we keep being impotent in the hurly burly of AFL.

And as the support base has waned only the mcc type supporters are the mainstays, & the Demon feral hords have died out like the Thylacine... so for the last 25Yrs our supporters want all our players to be like a cross between Robby Flower & Cliff 'cricket' Richard.

These type supporters want our players to be like choir boys. I was outraged one year when a Northern Stand supporter yelled at one of our players, for being too rough.

We have to become a harder, tougher, rugged club again, like under Checker.

Which of course brings me to Jack Watts! On the small screen at home, I have been perplexed watching his lack of endeavour at the contest. Today, with the vision of the whole field, I am totally bemused at his half-hearted leads at nothing but jogging pace. 12 disposals for a wing/high hf and 2 tackles (which I did not see). Run flat out or run away!

Our ball movement and decision making is the number one thing that kills us and that's plain obvious from looking at either a Melbourne game or key stats from our games.

It's not anything else.

I've pointed out in previous posts that we've either matched it or come close to matching it when it comes to contested ball winning, (bar a couple of horrors).

Our turnovers, slow decision making, poor skill execution and players not willing to hit up targets for fear of missing or making a mistake is what has killed us most this year.

It's glaringly obvious.

I don't know how posters are still going on about being beaten at the contest.

It's the number one area we've improved most in this year and we are matching it with teams.

It's simple. We no longer have trouble winning the ball. We have few problems over-possessing the ball with dinky sideways kicks in our backhalf, (which are mostly pointless possessions). But we have major problems holding onto the ball and trying to move it forward with purpose and potency. It's almost non-existent.

your right, theres not enough Bounce, because mostly ours are tucked up too high to be effective.

we need more courageous aggressive players, & less of the right-eous choir boy wayz.

And some of those aggressive's should have elite mental & disposal skills. courage & balls is what we're short of.

Seriously 'dee-luded', these comments wear thin. I couldn't care less if they are choir boyz or not, I just want us to get good footballers and just maybe a couple outright champions. The last one this club had looked like a bit of a nerdish choir boy.
