Every team needs an absolute gun.

Hird, Voss, Buckley, Carey, Lockett, Riewoldt, Harvey, Ruccuito, Jarman, Brown, Kelly, Pendlebury, Swan, Watson, G Ablett, Hodge, Franklin, Rioli, Cotchin, Pavlich, Goodes, etc etc.

All top teams need that top 10 in the league player.

I think Jesse Hogan can be that player. I think Christian Petracca could be that player if we draft him.

The cavalry of Jones, Tyson, Vince, Dawes, Frawley, Toumpas,Viney, Salem will be very good but not the star that carries you over the line in a tight one or rips the game to pieces.

I live in hope.

I think Jack Viney will be every bit a superstar, is see him as the next joel selwood

I reckon Tyson has superstar potential, Nathan Jones and Bernie Vince's best footy is upper elite

Jesse Hogan looks a future star, Max Gawn is the smokey I think could become an extremely good player

Tom Mcdonald sorts out his kicking and he's the best defender in the comp imo

I think Viney/Tyson will both be very very good players.

Same goes for Trengove, Hogan and Salem.

But i genuinely think that Toumpas has that class about him, he has more polish than all of those players put together.. All of those 6 could be stars, hopefully 2 or 3 will become the stars we need.

Dom Tyson. That is all.

After that, our premiership chances rely on Viney, Salem, Hogan, Toumpas, Trengove, getting to "elite" status, which will be one level below where Tyson is.

I hope that by that stage, Jones, Frawley, Dawes and Vince still have something to offer.

Stand by for the "we should have taken Wines" responders :-))

I hope that you are 100% right and those who love to look backwards eat their humble pie.

I seriously think Tyson is the one. I see some of Simon Black and Hodge in him. Its easy to forget he is a kid - if he played a few less games last year he would be elligible for the rising star this year

he is slowing down in the past month but the scope to improve is massive. Also he has that x factor about him in that he has that confidence (bordering on arrogance) that all champs have and that i havent seen from a Melb player in years. another preseason and tidy up disposal and watch out

We'll be popping a bottle of Dom when he wins a brownlow in 2018 ;)

Tyson, all he needs to do is get some consistency back in his kicking (which he did have for a while, before it dropped off again recently) and he'll get there. Heck, he's played 20-odd games and is already nearly there.

Chip will have something to offer, when he's down in the slumps with his Geelong teammates

I remember having this roundabout argument with a few posters prior to Rd 1 about Viney being ahead of Watts and Michie in the midfield if he pulls up for Rd 1. Now he missed 2 weeks but he immediately became the next best mid behind Jones, Vince, and Tyson. Just like he did last year behind only Jones.

I am not as bullish about him being a 'star' but that word (and others like that one) are simply reserved for the best players on good teams - and I definitely think he could be one of those.

I thank the heavens his kicking is neater than his dads, though...

Probably Morton, Scully, Jurrah or Clark.

Dom Tyson to me seems to have the credentials of becoming a star. Howe should really be setting the league alight by now. He's turned out to be a great player but hardly star worthy.

Viney? Maybe. We need someone to go a level ahead of what Jones does (as great as he is). We need someone that is going to win us a game off their own boot (but not necessarily do it all the time). Tyson can be that guy.

Howe is FAR from a great player, and I honestly don't think he has what it takes to be anything but a B-grader, and that's not meant to imply he's at that level as yet.

So he is having a C grade year so far?

I give our backline a solid A this season and Dunn, Grimes, McDonald, and Howe are a big part of that.

Howe has been excellent back there.

To be fair Howe has had a few games where he wasn't good, but it's only because he was still finding his feet as a backman. He's been solid the past few weeks, our backline as a whole has been superb for the most part of this year.

RPFC - kudos to you for working out where I have rated Howe this year. You're progressing.

He is by far our most overrated player, and the gap between his good (which isn't great) and bog-ordinary is very wide. Has there been a player this year that's copped more blasts from the coach? I doubt.

If we had more depth, or more to the point, if blokes like Blease, Strauss, Tapscott and even Michie were pushing harder at Casey, I would not be surprised if Howe was not in the senior team. I should add Terlich in there somewhere too, but he's obviously played in the same team as JH, so I probably shouldn't add him in there.

Our backline is being held together by Dunn (clear standout) and Macdonald, with Jetta playing some great roles. Garland is down on form, Grimes is as hit and miss as anyone, and Howe (see above).

Patty Dangerfield...

Oh wait that deal isn't done yet.

But seriously I can't see any, I've said all year that Tyson moves like Pendles in and around packs so he might get there with a lot of hard work but apart from that it's probably a bit early to call on Salem Hogan and Tomp

Having said that I think we have a lot that can be B+ like Jones Watts Viney Trenners Howe TMac Dawes...

hahahahahahaa

Jones is an A grader mate.

Viney, Trengove, Tmac and Watts should actually be A graders at some point, they're only young.

I was assuming A grade to be the highest, which Jones is not. Close but not quite. And I agree the others should get to his level but if we are talking about stars, A+ Game winners what ever you want to call them (players like Ablett Pendles Judd as the op stated) then none of those blokes can get there IMHO.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
