I am filled with paranoia I know, but could this happen to us.

As the compensation to a club who loses a Free Agent is based on his new contract, could a manipulative club, wishing to avoid slipping further down the draft order, get a player to agree to a low one year deal in writing, on the promise of a huge new contract in the following years?

The low one year contract, could see say a 3rd round compensation pick given to the club losing the player, instead of a 1st round pick.

Don't be so paranoid Redleg.

In the first place, Frawley has been a loyal servant of the club and any collusion to achieve such a result would be seen as a low dog act in similar vein to the little creep who was once accused of lying to our dying club president.

And secondly, the new AFL CEO is well known for his desire to run a competition with "integrity" and I'm sure he would see draft tampering written all over such a proposal and ask some probing questions and make the appropriate rulings.

To calm your nerves, remember that the new club gains nothing really by doing it. The compensation pick is pulled magically out of the "Andrew Demetriou Memorial Infinite 4rsecrack" at AFL Headquarters. They don't have to give up anything either way.

The endless animosity of Melbourne may not count for much, but the other club would also gain a solid reputation among all clubs for total douchebaggery.

It would be a collectively declared open season on any 'ploy' aimed at that club.

Not also that the ability of clubs to acquire free agents without 'paying' any price in list terms also creates a super-incentive to use free agency to recruit, even if it is more expensive.

As I describe it, what recruiter in the game would turn down a deal of "One additional first round draft pick, ready to go, definitely AFL level, but you have to pay an extra $100k on their salary'?

How exactly the AFL failed to grasp the implications of that market failure, just boggles my mind.

I would think the formula applied would take in more than just the first years salary...ie the players age, length of contract, total value ect.

I know. The paranoia makes me even think that one day the fixture could be done in such a way, that lowly clubs like Melbourne will be disadvantaged, by getting all the worst times, so as to kill any chance of financial improvement.

Then again remembering my paranoia, I am sure we would pick a dud and it wouldn't matter.

I think clubs have enough trouble managing contractual arrangements as it is ( front loading, backloading and approxiamtely 25-30% of the list coming out of contract yearly) to factor in a further complication just to gazump opposition clubs.

No it wouldn't happen. For an restricted FA, the existing club has the opportunity to match the offer being made. If the only offer on the table is a low-ball 1 year then the club would match it with gusto.

For an unrestricted FA they are in an open market.

Any suggestion of a "promise" for future payments finishes up in the Kurt Tippett scenario. The player is putting everything at risk. And any other club would bring it to the attention of the AFL quickly.....i.e we offered the player $1M per year, but he signed on for $500K......

Surely Chip wouldn't risk his career to leave for a one year contract and a hand shake deal. Can you imagine the s/fight that would happen if the FA player did a knee or badly broke their leg in that one year and the club delisted them?

Gee another burst of paranoia.

I wonder if the Swans who have grabbed the last 2 champions available, could get a top 3 pick through their Academy. Oh yes, according to the Sun today they can and will.

And another burst of paranoia. I wonder if we will be allowed to bid on that American giant who was over here training. No we are not allowed to bid as we didn't have the money to go the States and talk to him, so he has to go to another struggling club the Magpies, who like the Swans got Witts and Keefe through their Academy.

Wow, the way I am going, I won't believe anymore that the AFL is a fair and level playing field for all clubs.
