Dawes points a lot too, and people have been applauding him for it. Pointing doesn't equal bad player.

nor does it make him a good one. its value nuetral

Im not really sure why anyone particulary cares about Moloney currently. I dont

Many fail to acknowledge that none of our players stood up in those losses in 2011. Players such as Garland, Frawley, Green, Jamar, Dunn, Rivers, Sylvia, Davey and co were nowhere to be seen when we were being mauled. Our younger players were thrown in amongst it and it's any wonder we ended up where we did. Hopefully that's all about to change for the better.

With regards to those 13 losses in 2011, Jones did ok but he wasn't in anywhere near the form he is in now. There's no one else - that means we can point the finger at about 40 listed players from that year (including Moloney) Save for a few individual performances, our players all went missing when the heat was applied in 2011 - that continued on throughout most of 2012 and 2013.

We went from having a whole team of flat track bullies who played a bruise free style to having a whole list of no track bullies by the end of 2013.

It's a team game and when the team under performs, it's everyone's fault (generally) Coaches, players alike. The only bloke who can be given a pass mark from 2011-2013 is Nathan Jones. The rest failed (on an overall basis)

With Roos and PJ at the helm, we've at least got a chance of becoming a relevant footy club again.

Yeah he was really poor last week. I really don't understand why people get so obsessed about pointing though.

We're "obsessed about pointing" because we recognise that doing so is totally hypocritical when you don't chase or tackle or show even a basic familiarity with the concept of teamwork.

Meh... Still think people read into it too much

This argument is ridiculous. You know what, I'm sure our forwards kicked less goals when we lost too. Having less disposals, goals, marks etc is kind of expected when you lose isn't it?!

Is it?

This is the same argument used at the time.

Let's have a look at how much Melbourne in 2011 fared with this statistic:

2011

Melbourne Disposals in Wins - 383

Melbourne Disposals in Losses - 336

Percentage Decrease - 12.2%

Moloney Disposals in Wins - 28.5

Moloney Disposals in Losses - 21.1

Percentage Decrease - 26%

If I was to be mean and include 186 where he was ill and couldn't play more than a couple of minutes, his percentage decrease jumps to 31.5%.

As a measure, Nathan Jones in 2011-14:

Melbourne Percentage Decrease in Losses - 12.2%, 16%, 10.5%, and 9.5%

Jones Percentage Decrease in Losses - 2.5%, 15%, 15.5%, and +7.1%.

I am not going to give Moloney an out for his game diminishing by a quarter of his output in games we don't win.

Wow. Just wow. You're seriously putting that much effort an emphasis on numbers just to try and justify bagging out a former player.... Might be time for a hobby RPFC

PS- shouldn't you be including Jones stats as just from 2011 if you're trying to make a fair comparison?

This took me 15 mins to do, Stuie.

Please don't make yourself seem like such a pill when you tell me to have a hobby - you are also on here quite a bit, I just like to back up my comments with evidence.

And I am hardly bagging him out, I am saying his input diminished in games we didn't win, for whatever reason, and I found that unacceptable for a senior player who was also our best midfielder.

The notion that 'Neeld ruined him' is the fallacy here - Moloney had consistency issues - as I have proven here, well known behavioural issues, and defensive intent issues that Neeld was so ill-equipped to help him with.

When I say "Neeld ruined him" I'm not saying Moloney was the perfect player, I'm saying he clearly had strengths that helped us and whatever Neeld did he took away those strengths in the way he tried to add other parts to his game. Any decent coach would have found a way to add things without taking other things away.

My point about hobbies was how much work you put into those stats, not Demonland time, as we'd all had to admit how much time we spend on here i think!

Now, how's the Jones 2011 numbers going?

They are the first numbers - he decreased his output by 2.5% in losses in 2011.

Gotcha. So both Moloney and Jones had less disposals in losses than wins in 2011.

Must mean Jones is a "flat track bully" then.

Posted

Moloney was not a great loss, Rivers was and we always ran the risk that a fit Petterd would kick on at another club.

Moloney siimply is not good or consistent enough to get away with playing the game that he does.

Ricky will never get fit.

Rivers was ok at times but no world beater.

All rubbish players.

Glad they've gone.

Grand sale at the end of the year too.

You can only have a sale if there are buyers jr

Well, actually, in that particular year Jones went down less than 1 disposal, and Brent down almost 8 disposals.

So no, I am not going to agree with that assertion at all.

I feel sorry the way supporters attack previous (and current) players at this club. Some may call Moloney a "flat track Bully", I call him a barometer at that time at this club.

He played and wore his jumper proudly. The fact that his best was not as good as an Ablett, is not his fault. He was never an A grade midfielder. He performance was as reflective of the list that was around him at the time.

I love how some are backing Neeld in this case. IMO, Neeld had massive communication issues. He was offensive on so many different levels. Nuff said there

History will prove Moloney will be remembered as a better club man than Neeld. Nuff said here too!

As some people have noted, it remains essentially the one good decision Neeld made during his tenure. One dimensional bully boy.

Anecdotally, I have always felt that Jones has a bit of Allan Border in him - the harder the going gets the better he plays. No stats on it - just an observation.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
