Players to target at the end of the year

Would kill for Carlisle.

I was hoping for him pre-draft, but went on to be surprised how good he has been at times at Essendon.

Being forced forward hasn't helped him, but the kid can be an elite defender.

I'd give our 2nd rounder for him, maybe more.

As much as i hate the Scum, Carlisle is definitely worth a first round pick (and a highish one at that).

Would love him if he has a clean ASADA slate.

Theres the problem, while those 5 guys are quality our midfield only goes 5 deep. The shallowest midfield in the AFL

Roos will be stocking up in midfield talent again this offseason, its by far our biggest problem still although it has obviously improved from the depths of 2012-2013

You know we go more than 5 deep, plenty of other rotate through our midfield

Refresh my memory again how deep is Meth Coasts midfield

Priddis - very good inside and clearance specialist

Selwood - Tagger hard runner when fit in the words of Jack Dyer good ordinary footballer

Shuey - outside runner has been found out can't break a tag

Gaff - as above

Masten - doesn't need a tag let him have it he will turn it over

Wellingham - lucky to not be sent to the WAFL for the rest of the year, overpaid and been found out in a weaker midfield

Rosa - good hard runner who plays mostly on a wing

Sheed - not up to it yet finding the lift in pace and intensity difficult, they are crying out for speed and should have kept their pick last year and taken Freeman, because Waterman is similar to Sheed but an upgrade

Mark Hutchings - like many players very good at WAFL/VFL level but skills get found out at AFL level

Mcginnity - honest as they come but very limited

Prior to 2013 Teams went the hard tag on Kerr & Priddis who would feed the ball out to Shuey and Gaff/Embley and they were exciting on the break. Last season teams changed tact and tagged the outsiders hard who were a lot less effective without the space. They have yet to adjust and they have been found out as a very undersized midfield

I've always thought they were going to miss Kerr and they really are. I think we've talked before about his off field behaviour but there is no doubt he was a key player for them and very underrated over here with Cousins and Judd taking the limelight.

yes we go more than 5 deep numbers wise, of course we do. But we only have 5 deep of quality (Trengove excluded)

Who is our 6th best midfielder?

Rohan Bail? Matt Jones?

i saw something about Melbourne being interested in Carlisle from the bombers. Would love him!

Decent player. Essendon have stuffed him around. They should have kept him back instead of playing funny buggers and throwing him forward...and then back...and then forward...and then back.

I have two questions for you, JVFP. 1) Why would we need him? 2) Where did you hear it? :P

I wouldn't say no, but if it was at the expense of improving our midfield, I'd question the decision.

Apparently a few clubs have put feelers out for Griffiths from Richmond who has had injury problems in the past and now is struggling to get a game over there. Could be handy as a cover to provide key position forward depth.

He's played 10 games this year, which isn't overly too bad, but he's not a great player. Big bodied but that's about it.

I never said West Coast had a good midfield?

But you said we had the worst midfield in the AFL, I believe Meth Coast have the worst midfield in the league you say we only run 5 deep in quality not many sides barring the absolute guns of the competition go beyond 5 deep. So if you make a statement back it up

I will miss some here but off the top of my head the top liners in clubs midfields are

Hawks - Lewis, Mitchell, Sewell, Hodge, Burgoyne, Hill, Smith

Port - Boak, Polec, Wines, Grey, Ebert, Hartlett

Swans - Hanneberry, Kennedy, Jack, Bird, Parker, Mcglynn,Mcveigh,

Freo - Fyfe, Barlow, Mundy, Hill

Pies - Pendelbery, Swan, Beams, Sidebottom

Cats - Selwood, Kelly, Bartel, Stevie J, Stokes

Roos - Harvey, Wells, Dal Santo, Zieball, Cunnington

Suns - Ablett, Prestia, O'Meara, Bennell

Crows - Thompson, Sloane, Dangerfield, Crouch

Bombers - Goddard, Watson, Heppell, Zaharakis

Meth Coast - Priddis Rosa

Blues - Gibbs, Murphy, Judd

Tigers - Cotchin, Martin (tank is a worry), Deledio

Dogs - Boyd, Mcrae, Libba, Bontempelli, Dalhaus, Griffin

Lions - Redden, Rockliff, Rich

GWS - Treleoar, Shiel, Whitfield

Saints - Stephen, Hayes,

I still believe there are good players out there who have not come through the main feeders or have developed later. While the young stars seem to be in the draft pool there are mature footballers out there who could play AFL. Examples like Smith of the Hawks and Barlow of the Dockers are having great AFL careers after being given their chance.

These guys are often later picks as well.

What has happened to Butcher at Port? Must be injured.

Just looked it up he is not injured. Must not be part of Port's plans going forward, has hardly played this year I believe.

I wonder if he would be a cheap pick up as a backup forward, if our usual run of injuries continues.

I know we need mids but they will come from our early picks or a trade. We still need a couple of talls, one back, one forward and maybe a rookie ruckman as well.

Butcher is big and ready to go and apparently wanted to come home. He is obviously no star but under Roos maybe could improve. Maybe South Australian Tapscott and a pick could get him.

I think he'd be a great replacement for Frawley. 22 year old who has been All Australian, screams star to me.

I saw it on a rumours page about players... i dont take it as credible at all, but no of us actually have any idea who is interested where. So thought i'd just state what i heard.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
