One of my best mates is a fanatical Cats man, who is also an astute judge of footballing talent, believes the Cats are winding down.

Their champions are getting older and their youngsters are grossly over rated.

In 2-3 years they will only have Selwood and Hawkins, with players like Motlop around the fringes.

I found this an interesting observation and doesn't bode well for Geelong's short term future.

Hawthorn's future has looked similarly dire.

Sewell, Hodge, Mitchell, Lake, Burgoyne et al all getting into the twilight.

One of the keys is building a good culture, but most clubs are onto that these days, so it's very hard to stay at the very top.

Geelong are drifting back to the pack though.

Not as enticing a destination as it once was.

yes they've been looking stale, as I said a week & a half back. & 6 weeks ago I said Chip should look North to the Suns, if he wants success in his near future. thats IF he wants to leave us.

Their backline is built around old guys still. Rivers, Lonergan, Taylor (not that old), Enright, Mackie. They'll all wind down and they don't have the talent there.

Young forwards will be alright, Hawkins and Motlop is a fair start for any forward line. Rucks are fine. Young mids wont be bad - Caddy, Christensen, Duncan, Horlin-Smith, Guthrie and Selwood is still young enough to be around a long time.

Who knows how low they will fall but it probably depends on the quality of the 4 or 5 new defenders they need. Like Thurlow, don't like Smedts or T Hunt. The lesser twin Kolodjashnij apparently goes ok. But how they'll replace Lonergan is probably their biggest worry right now.

They're very happy with how Jake Kolodjasnij is going down at KP.

I think his own talents hid in the shadow of his brother's a little in scouts eyes.

Won't be long before we see him play (albeit not this season).

I personally think we're a big chance of retaining Frawley now. We've shown enough improvement and with Roos there for another 2 seasons at least, finals are a distinct possibility in that time. He doesn't strike me as the money-chaser type either.

I think the more defining point is that the Hawks stars are ageing, as are the cats, as are the dockers, if he wants to leave for a flag the suns might be the best bet, and they are probably 2 years off still, staying with us is suddenly not writing off any chance he has of a flag, we could be around the mark within 4 years the way we are improving and our list is shaping.

Disagree, I think he will be true to his word and make a decision at years end, he won't want to sign based on a few good games and have us play terrible after that, Roosy and PJ will do absolutely all they can.

I just don't agree that he is gone if he hasn't signed by our next bye, regardless of what we do on field I can't see him re-signing before the end of the year, if nothing else the concern over potentially losing him might get a better deal from us

we really can't lose, he's playing forward and we have the third best defence in the comp, that will continue to improve, especially as our midfield does, if he leaves we get a top 5 pick and add some more top end talent to our list, or trade that pick for another dom Tyson type deal.

To be fair Machsy, I think just about everyone is basing their positions on chip on their own opinions, hardly a reason to jump down someone's throat.

he did say he wanted to see progress and a game plan. there it is chip. I think he will stay now.

I think the fact our progress is so tangible and promising, while the likes of Geelong and Hawthorn suddenly seem shaky (moreso the former), will get Chip over the line to stay with us (unless he's thinking of moving interstate).

Our list, right now, shows more potential than any other Victorian team outside the top 8. Carlton, Richmond, Saints, Bulldogs and Essendon all look thoroughly average or downright awful this year, and all 5 have glaring KPP shortages. Three are starting a rebuild this year or next, one is underperforming, and the Bombers have an uncertain future. As for the successful Victorian teams in the top 8, Geelong and Hawthorn have aging lists, and I don't think he'd go to North or Collingwood.

In other positive news, Victorian players in other states trying to get home will be reaching a similar conclusion when weighing up their options; we're the most attractive destination in the bottom 8.
