With Roos repeating his words about young players earning their place, and older bodies "protecting their development", I reckon Byrnes will play round 1 instead of JKH. Both on display at Casey on Saturday so it will be interesting.

Thank you Maldonboy you have just darkened my night.

Sad but probably true.

I think we have a stirrer in our ranks!

Not sure why you say that WJ.

You and many others know my thoughts on his worth.

Stirrer or not I still think it will be sad.

he was OK last week

Definitely not stirring the pot, I just see the current landscape this way.

In similar fashion I don't see Viney playing round 1 because of the same principle. Roos sounds dogged when explaining how his coaching regimen will manage young players. He will protect them, he will take them slowly, and "make it hard for younger players to get a game". I reckon he sees a decent team maybe 3 years away and wants our young guns to be front and centre of this bunch.

In the NAB challenge, look at Dunn, Bail, Pederson, even Georgiou - used extensively while some of the younger, inexperienced players were used sparingly.

It is a bit sad because I am dying to see Viney, Toumpas, Hogan, Salem, JKH, Harmes and Hunt get a sold run for the Dees but I am having to wait.

Only one? I think there is at least one whose initials are not OD ... :-)

Gee I hope you are wrong.

Viney, Toumpas and Hogan are in our best 22. JKH and Salem could be there by the end of the year. Harmes and Hunt will probably need the year at Casey, but then again who knows how much they will develop and how quickly. Hunt's body is the least matured of the group.

You don't think he has any X factor? :):)

From the Misson injury update and Clark article it sounds like a 22 regular season side featuring a sub to play the Hawks. Pedersen, Toumpas, Strauss, JKH, Viney all mentioned as due to play. I'd go with:

FB: Dunn Frawley Georgiou

HB: Grimes McDonald Strauss/Terlich/Clisby

C: Watts Jones Cross

HF: Michie Pedersen Toumpas

FF: JKH Hogan Howe

Foll: Spencer Vince Tyson

Int: Fitzy, Trengove, Viney

S: Bail

Left out who could feature in round 1 ahead of that 22:

Left over small defenders, Byrnes, Blease, Matt Jones, McKenzie?,

Close to the money I reckon. I'd put McKenzie ahead of Viney at this stage, but that could change if Viney puts in a couple of strong ones over the next two weeks (we already know what we will get from McKenzie). I'd currently have Terlich with his nose in front of Clisby for the second HBF, but again the next couple of weeks will be decisive.

Viney may be used more at half-forward or on the wing this season, with coach Paul Roos keen to ease some of the load on the 19-year-old.

Utility Cameron Pedersen (hamstring) will also return in the game against the Hawks, while Jimmy Toumpas has been given the all clear – provided he gets through training on Thursday – after copping a head-knock from Billie Smedts in the NAB Challenge game against the Cats.

Exciting youngster Jay Kennedy-Harris will also play against the Hawks.

I thought the same, but after reading what the Captain says. JKH a certainty.

Demons co-captain Nathan Jones said Jay Kennedy-Harris – who booted three goals in the club's opening NAB Challenge game against Richmond – was firming for round one against the Saints.

"I reckon he's a big chance. I've been pretty excited by his pre-season and he had a pretty game in the NAB Challenge," Jones told AFL.com.au.

Was talking to the sister of Harmes last week, she is a life guard at the local pool in Cranbourne, who said he and all the new players are loving life under Roos and the vibe at MFC was one of excitement and expectation. Also mentioned that they had basically been told that their development was paramount and any games would have to be earned.

Given this I would not expect a lot of game time particularly early in the season for the new recruits and when they do get opportunity it will be when they are ready.

I thought Byrnes was a shoe in, but his game in Alice was atrocious.

So many fumbles that ended up in the hands of his old club.

It looked like the Cats had 19 players on the ground at some stages.

Sure hope we promote Georgiou before Round 1. He may be quite had for us this year in providing depth in our backline!

Weren't they explorers? Crossed a desert or something didn't they?

I think you are correct RM.

The sad part is they perished after their legs gave out.

Chippy did you and C & B watch the same game?

He assures me he was ok.

Some how I think I will take your view.

Not the desert, south pole I believe. Clark hasn't been heard from since he left the tent with a parting "I may be some time".

He was fine. He missed handballs a couple of times and kicked into the man on the mark at a crucial stage.

As a FP/HFF in a team that got 31 Inside 50s he was surprisingly lively.

Lewis and Clark went across North America to the Pacific......called the Corps of Discovery Expedition, bit like reading some of the posts on Demonland.....except that is "Cor!, what the hell is that!"

Whats happening with Kent? He can take Byrnes spot.

He has gone under the radar this preseason - he is now fully fit I think.

He showed a lot last year - if he is being moulded for a midfield position he might find himself at Casey a bit this year (that might not be a bad thing)

It's really strange, at the end of last year i had him in the best 22, not sure what the go is, doesn't even seem to be on the radar at the moment.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
