Melbourne Turns to Meditation under Roos

On the subject of meditation I was reading the other day about a theory (controversial) of Quantum Consciousness (orchestrated object reduction) being put forward by scientists (Stuart Hameroff in particular) who have done a lot of work with microtubules, small structures found in cells, including neurons. They are suggesting that we experience reality through a series of conscious moments driven by quantum processes at a rate of about 40Hz. Hameroff claims that experienced meditators (and Michael Jordan) run at a higher clock rate so experience more reality per second than the rest of us and why, for Jordan, time seems to slow down when he is in the zone.

A controversial theory, interesting to see how it pans out in further research.

(do I need to get out more?)

have you never dropped into the 'zone', & then back out of it? when things happen in slow motion.

I have, sometimes used to happen when batting in cricket (wish it happened more often).

Sadly, when it came to the more athletic aspects of sport I moved so slowly that all those watching thought they were "in the zone".

Sounds fair to me, given that the linear constraints we ascribe to time are just an artificial construct anyway. And we all know that the 'passing' of time is relative, just witness how long the quarters go when the dees are getting hammered, as against the all too recently rare opposite! IGAG, I think you probably need to stay IN more, keep reading, and pass on the gems ;)

Gawnski, can attest to similar states at the crease(never for long enough).

Sometime a batsman can try to pre-empt "the zone" and come unstuck.

Long time sportsman are often gamblers ,risk takers in general .

I think the loss of that intuitive knowledge of "where the ball will be"

is what we call "form"

When you are out of form you guess and when you are in it you know.

I think if we were batting together our first mid pitch conference might be;

"No quick singles"

"Agreed-Not ever"

total focus is IMO is the slo Mo factor but I think its impossible to be in that 100% of the time.

but somewhere less than that is I think in the zone (constant)

just focus without any inner distractions = confidence in what your doing, X secure in your surrounds, X a quiet mind.

meditation is a help imo.

I think 'intuitive' is from the sub conscious. 'guessing', or 'a trying thought' is from the conscious mind (IMO), trying to 'force, - or think' yourself to play well. instead of belief & trust & letting it happen.

Does anyone else have issues of independence with this arrangement?

Meditation might be good, I don't know, but if it is should the coaches wife be benefiting from the provision of services or is she doing it for nothing?

Is she the best available to provide these services? Who is in charge of her appointment and who hires and fires her. If it's Roos there is a clear issue.

Seems strange to me.

Letting it Happen is probably at the core of meditation and related buddhist based religions.

Are you a Carl Jung fan mate?

Some fascinating studies of intuition, synchronicity and of course, the unconscious mind.

Unfortunately Melbourne has suffered a collective negativity as a club and supporter base.

Roos doesn't really trust negative energy which is doing us all the world of good!

Don't give a rats ring what we pay her .

I'm delighted the guy has involved his whole life into our little basket case of a footy club.

I raised this at the time Roos was being chased, as I was reading his book and it mentioned her giving the Swans players meditation advice.

If it is being provided free that would alleviate a number of concerns.

I would imagine Mahoney would be in charge as head of the Footy Department and it would be handled sensitively, if it didn't work out.

I get the very strong feeling from the book that money would not be her motivation.

Anyway I hope it helps us.

To be honest I would be happy to have some advice on meditation from her, as this club has stressed me out severely, over a number of years.

I sort of knew of it, let it happen, or let it be. but I didn't have any experience or confidence to support any of it when young.

after going thru the horrendous pain of growing from a wreck, & then over balancing the other way with the growth of confidence the pain erupted.

slowly the experiences grow & confidence grows & following that learning starts to happen.. if this is in conjunction with an enquiring type of mind, & an open & welcoming mind to other Ideas, then all sorts of growth happens when in a state of relative calm & normality.

I don't read as I can't sit still long enough to focus on text from a book unless its a goal oriented subject. (to fix the car)

my learning is all from my experiences & from pro help etc. no jung teachings as far as i know of. just a lot of bloody hard work, & thoughtful intuitive Ideas these days.

Great to hear everyone's thoughts on meditation. The human mind is not only endlessly fascinating but also can be very difficult to control as an individual. This applies to many life situations, not least of which high pressure sports. Meditation, as a way of understanding and training the mind, is both an ancient technique AND on the very cutting edge of modern science. Paul Roos introducing it, I believe, is an excellent initiative for the club. Well done Paul Roos and family.

Hi Biff, I'd argue that what you've highlighted is combination of focus, pattern recognition and decision accuracy. It may feel intuitive because cognition works at a subconscious level.

Whatever the process, if it means you are hitting boundaries instead of piddly 2's and 3's then I definately want you as my batting partner!

Our boys have spent far too much time over the past 6+ years "in slow motion" it would seem :-(

I wonder what Tammy is charging - if we're getting it at a 'family discount' rate then having her directing it is extremely helpful because the real stuff, with proper instruction, can get seriously expensive.

Practiced as a formal discipline meditation is a superb form of self-control training. Has been proven effective for anger management, stress relief, alleviating depression, improving concentration, post-trauma recovery, pretty much anything about managing mood and mental state. But it is a serious skill that requires focus and training to learn to use effectively. In fact, one of the reasons it has not taken off so much as a treatment is the cost of the sessions. Perhaps ironic that such a self-reliant approach incurs so much cost.

On the other hand, homeopathy and quite a few other 'alternative' medicines are absolute frauds that puts people in danger by misdirecting them away from actual treatment. In the case of chiropractic 'treatment', it can even do direct harm.

I was wondering when chiropractic was going to rear its ugly head in this discussion, especially with a couple of physios posting in this thread. I thought about introducing it myself when I saw ding's scathing attach on homeopathy.

this is why imo the past Aus' Test Cricket coach, & the attitudes implemented that got him hired in the first place, was born from idealism & ignorance. they were very wrong I believe, & this shook the fabric of the team & squad & the wheels fell off. add an indifferent & lost leader & splat.

boof has brought back a language & culture, easily understood by ours at a sub level, without thinking out aloud to themselves. just an instinctive way of things which allows natural play to resume & harmony to return.

Our boys have spent far too much time over the past 6+ years "in slow motion" it would seem -(

no mono, the opposite. ;) Their minds wheels spinning out of control & getting Nil traction. and going Nowhere (panic) but sliding downhill.

Slowing down the conscious thought process via a more relaxed mind, will allow a faster transference of information to switch from subconscious to the conscious brain & acts of spontaneity.

When confidence returns further, hopefully we will see less decision errors, as they gain belief in the new processes & themselves, & in time we should start to win more habitually.

It's conveyed above all by the way the coach is present. Nick on Demonology used to refer to Neeld in his training reports as "The Invisible Man", because he was so often absent and not very interactive when present. Roos is already showing something different - present, talking, teaching, overseeing without interfering. It's not just the words, it's the music.

No doubt, but Neeld probably hoped to become more present as his list evolved & he would then mellow. (good cop - bad cop) but he ran out of time.

but his cleanout was just what we needed. he weeded us out & pensioned off.

this Will help the changing of our cultural guard easier, & the instillation of the new culture more successful in adhering to the walls, paint & fabrics throughout our club.

the players will adopt it & eat, breath & speak it, as if it was always in our Clubs ways.

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe
