if anyone bothered to watch the game in a slightly different light with regard to Gadgetman he instigated a few happening with intelligent use of the ball.

He knows how to use his body

He knows how to negate the oppositions body

He knows where the drop of the ball will occur ...

...and has ready made options as to what to do with it

Doesnt shirk, doesnt second guess, is cool, calm and collected

Hes NOT mag cover material....so who cares

He just a fair dinkum footy player.... ffs weve been crying out for them. players who just DO the job. Good teams have them, Premiership teams have them.

Not directly comparing but he reminds me in a sense of Doull...just goes about a job...no nonsense

Move him in to replace whoever is on the 'long-term-injured' list asap [and keep him there]!

Absolutely right, BB,

Just an old fashioned, hard nosed, blue collar defender. Not surprising that he's been a key member of two premiership teams.

As I said I'm becoming more convinced that Georgiou's kicking wont impact his ability to play AFL too much. Now it's just a matter of whether he's got the right mix of speed and size and I'd like to see him on more opponents before I declare him an absolute certainty.

But this from Frawley is huge:

Speaking at Melbourne’s family day at Luna Park on Sunday, Frawley said the 24-year-old South Australia had done everything asked of him, after he was drafted via the NAB AFL Rookie Draft last November.

“He’s a mature-age rookie from Adelaide who hasn’t missed a beat,” Frawley said.

“I think he’s done every [training] session and he’s a big-bodied player and as you saw on Friday night, he just has a go. He has a crack at every contest and that’s all you can ask of a player.

I’d trust him with my life as a fellow defender, but he’s been a good player and hopefully he can have a good, long career at the Dees.”

That's the basic step of any defender and it's probably what Strauss is missing (but I'm still willing to give him a few more chances) and probably what Dunn is hopefully adapting too as a player who makes horrendous mental mistakes at times. Frawley, McDonald, Garland, Terlich and Grimes all have that attack on the ball that gives their fellow defenders a lot of confidence.

You cant really how a player goes until you see him in a match pressure situation.

This bloke has bucket loads of talent in one on one situations and positions his body perfectly.

The sort of player who when the ball is in his area you feel confident as a supporter there is going to be no easy ball for the opposition.

I heard somewhere on Friday night (SEN I think) that the players have taken to calling him Presta-gia-georgiou after the unfashionable but effective Pies defender.

MFC article on Alexis: We shouldve defeated Cats: Georgiou

He is not happy that we didn't beat the Cats. Says he has fitted in well with the rest of the defenders, sounds like he feels at home. Taking nothing for granted as a rookie who needs to prove himself

I appreciate Georgiou has only played 2 practice games and other teams will start doing their research on him now, but he does seem to be blessed with buckets of football nous.

He says, Its been reassuring that theyre happy with the role that Ive been playing. Im never going to be a player with flair, but its all about playing my role as part of the six defenders.

My role is to be the lockdown defender and then offer a little bit of attack. Last night, I was a bit disappointed with the way I defended but its been good to get the reassurance [from Roos and Rawlings].

I love his attitude and if he keeps putting his body on the line and producing 80%+ efficiency he will very quickly become a Roos favourite

At effectively pick 125 in last years draft he is already in the top 25 players at the club and it would not surprise to see him line up round one.

Wonder how long Riley will be kept on the LTI list if Georgiou consistently performs after his rookie elevation?

Got to be fair to Riley and put him back on the senior list once he resumes matches in the VFL. But it's rare to go too long without injury. I'm super impressed with Georgiou but once Garland is back then Georgiou will really have to force his way in (which is good for everyone). It would actually work nicely that if Georgiou gets promoted and then demoted if it coincided with Garland's return.

Hopefully in future we go for 5 or 6 rookies so we always have an upgrade at the start of the year.

Hate to nitpick but when is a turnover NOT unnecessary? :P

Anyway, he seems comfortable in his position but his drop of the ball is very awkward. Reminds me a lot of Bruce. Overall though been a nice addition.

Georgiou certainly has a lot to offer, much more than was expected.

On the other hand, it will be interesting to see what a real hard nut like Riley has to offer in this midfield or defence.

you might just find Riley come backs ...and Georgio re -elevated around mid season just as its able to lift a rookie anyway

Liked his game though he's lacking a little in height and was exposed by Mitch Brown who had 9cm (I think) on him.

This shouldn't be a problem when Chip and Garland return to the team, though it'll be interesting to see if he can hold his place when both those guys are back.

I agree with all of that 'bub. I said in another thread that he reminds me of our own Brett Lovett, in that he is an 'unfashionable' footballer who can be relied upon to do a great job playing within his limits. He will be picked to play a role, and indications so far are that he will play it to a tee. Roosy would love him for that!

I'm sure there will be another LTI before his time is up. (it always happens)

Hate to nitpick but.....he kicked very well vs Cats. His awkward ball drop didn't seem to make a difference.

I thinks that we'll always have a spot for a player like him - assuming it translates to the H&A stuff, which I reckon it will. He will make at least one player on the ground earn every touch. We could ask for more but lets face it, we've been given much less recently. In a full strength backline he is going to make the job of the playmakers much easier, and the job of his fellow backmen less pressured. People like him are gold. They might not win games but they'll make sure that the rest of the team has the best chance of doing that.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
