Yes ''we'' do, unless I'm the only one reading this forum.

I often see negative opinions on here regarding draft selections and usually don't agree, but generally accept other views and move on (you'll find that ironic). However, you seem to feel the need to continually comment on most negative views.

Like you, I know nothing about these rookies, so don't bother entering the fray. It makes me wonder why you have so much to contribute on topics in which you're thread bare.

I didn't comment on your negative views in that training thread...

I think you should stick to worrying about what I said, not any supposed sycophantic motive for what I said.

Looked ok in the highlights reel though maybe indecisive at times.

But is he big enough for KPP defender at AFL level? Looked a bit small for that role.

If you freeze the reel at 1:24 the background signage may be the key - it says "Georgiou - trauma cover." Just a back up at this stage I would imagine.

Could have got Tippett, but I know you don't want me to go there.

It seems to me we could've gone:

ND: Salem, JKH, Harmes

RD: Tippett, King, Hunt, Jetta

That has a nice balance of types.

Best of luck to Alex Georgiou - WE picked him.

Ah..predictions.

I am sure there will be predictions ranging from "spud, delisted after one useless season list clogging" to "AA full back and key premiership player".

Such is the joy of our game and our freedom of speech.

This is the prediction above>

Think some people are getting a bit caught up with the whole mature aged key defender thing. Tippett has improved, but I just don't see him making the grade. Kory Beard is more likely.

Alex Georgiou would be the best mature aged defender in the state leagues, but he hardly gets a mention.

Melbourne will take Georgiou at some point in the rookie draft. Its great for Alex, he is better than Tippett.

Is that Bernie Vince in the bottom right corner crashing in on what I must presume is Norwood's post grand final celebrations

Georgiou is a scrapper who battles hard and can play a shutdown role. Skills are average and we may be nervous when he has the footy.

Casey key defender IMO.

He's 187cm. Developing him purely on talls at Casey would be a waste of time IMO. He needs to play on the most dangerous forwards we can find in the VFL and prove that he is an absolute elite shut down defender. Elite shut down defenders (N Smith, Toovey, Steven Morris even Dale Morris although he usually plays talls) become worth developing regardless of skill level, with the caveat being that they have sound decision making.

At the moment Garland is the only defender I have any confidence in playing against the better mid sized and small forwards especially those who can crumb and mark - Le Cras, Betts, Michael Walters, Wingard, Lindsay Thomas. It would be nice to have a second option so when teams play 3 talls we use Garland tall and the second option small.

I noticed that he was out by himself quite a bit and it made me wonder; where was/is his opponent

I presume Norwood being a dominant team means they often play with the ball in their half and drop numbers back across half back. Similar to the way Sydney, Freo or Hawthorn often have spare defenders floating across half back.

Love how we pick this guy out of almost complete obscurity, and all of a sudden we're all experts on him.

It's a good point.

But then look at recruiters. Almost every time the flaws that are visible at 18 and strengths that are visible at 18 are the ones that remain throughout a career. The secret to being a successful AFL player is to maximize your strength so that you have the ability to impact games above other AFL players and to minimise weaknesses.

I'd be surprised if Georgiou isn't a competent defender who gets in the best at Casey for quality shut down jobs and also isn't average by foot and with the ball.

I mean if he turns out a rubbish defender and great kick that would be an interesting surprise.

Good article on Georgiou on the MFC phone App and website. I didn't realise that he was 24yo. They sound very serious about him by the article so it will be good to see him play!

Good pick up, I think it is Vince.

He wouldn't be too far from a celebration.

Expecting Georgiou to be Matthew Warnock 2.0

Plug-and-play shut down defender that comes into the side when injuries deem it necessary. Nothing flash, just plays his role and gets the job done.

Also interesting to hear him say in one of his interviews that he doesn't mind playing on key forwards or resting ruck men - all that at 187 cms! Must play tall, as they say...

That might work at SANFL level but I worry about him doing that same role at AFL. The big blokes are even bigger, move better and are better players in general. I think it's more likely that if a key defender gets injured he steps in to Dunn or Garland's spot as the third or 4th tall and they play on ruckman and so forth.

I just have this sneaking suspicion with Roos's love of bigger mobile mids that he ( Alex) might be moulded into a highly effective tagger. Just a feeling I admit :)

I think he is depth for Frawley and Garland and nothing more.

I'd hope he's not depth for eother of those two. He is Jack Grimes height.

He must be an extremely highly rated lockdown player. His skills look god awful so I don't imagine he'll offer a whole lot more.

I am never excited by pure depth players, and this is one of those, but if you want to get someone to play FB at a pinch you choose the undersized FB playing in a state league over the taller kid who might develop into that player after a few years.

Perhaps. I'm still not sure he'd fill a kp spot in the backline if Frawley went down. I'd be sending Hogan down there if that happened.

Hypotheticals.

Just seems an odd choice if what you're saying is the case. You'd think there'd be a plethora of KP backs out there with great lock down ability as well as better size. But I am merely a demonland poster...

I see him as a depth role player. That's about it.

I'll wait. And see.

I am sure there are better players out there with greater scope to be a player than Georgiou - I think he was the FB for Norwood and that is why he is on our RL.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
