Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

I never once suggested we should go after Byrnes or Rodan, Gillies. & interestingly 2 of them only had 12 month contracts, suggests they were

recruited as very shortterm, to assist in the list turnover, to start to refresh the culture.

we are in a better position to move the club forward in a healthy way Now, than we were at the start of 2012.

the big issue is trying to convince good players to join our revolution.

A year ago I was pushing for us to recruit Chappy, Sewell & Joel Corey as cultural revolutionists.

I'm of the opinion that we will get none of the players that we are after and I wonder if Roos is beginning to believe the job is even bigger than he thought.

We have a coach for the next two or three years and I guess that any players we approach will look at that and think why should I commit if he won't.

We must get the name of the Senior Assistant out as soon as possible; there is too much uncertainty at the moment. I think Roos should have just signed on and not made a point of saying he was getting out in two or three years; there is just too much of the temporary and not enough of the permanent at our club.

Viney, Toumpas, Barry ,Watt & draftees need to develop in the team and in the middle. Filling the team with Cross, Sewell, Byrnes is a waste, is it gonna win games? I'd rather Sewell over Cross but both were dropped to the VFL this year for form, both have lost a yard and I believe one of them is more interested in establishing a media Career than helping the Dees win back respect. They are better than Rodan, but same mistake I think.

You are kidding, surely... Sewell is a veteran finals campaigner in one of, if not THE best midfields in the AFL, is very well spoken in terms of getting a message across, has a very good football brain and would provide the kind of leadership and guidance that our team is crying out for. Yes, he is 29 which probably gives him 3 good years in the game, but what he can offer would go far beyond that... he would be helping to develop a midfield that will carry us for the next decade.

Sorry, but I can never understand the short term thinking that believes we should not be bringing in experienced mids who are in the twilight of their careers but who can offer the kind of mentoring that we would otherwise dream of (it would be almost like having another coach on the field). After all, it's not as if we are going to be playing finals in the next couple of years if we opt purely for youth and inexperience. I don't know, maybe it's a Gen-Y thing?

I agree, the whole "Senior Assistant/handover" thing left a sour taste in my mouth when Roos was signed. Add to that Peter Jackson only signed on for 6 months initially and then extended to the end of next year. No permanency there either. We need to build a solid base for the future of the footy club and it may be difficult when two fo the four pillars won't commit long-term.

Players from successful clubs to build culture didn't work last year. Is Sewell a leader or does he line up behind Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis, Roughhead and the rest of them. I think like Byrnes he could have been on the coat tails of a great midfield. Is there any evidence he can teach a kid how to play? And that's the coaches job anyway, and we have a great coach. Has he any experience working with a young midfield.

I'm Probably harsh, he would probably be our second best mid next year. But I'm not convinced he would be a valuable teacher in terms of culture, coaching and training.

Sewell shows fantastic leadership in tight games and finds an extra gear during finals footy.

Perfect fit for us next year.

I think that Sewell would be a great pickup. He is only one year (?) older than Sylvia and has twice the record.
Here is the downer though. While most of us would give our right nut to play with the MFC, I'm guessing Sewelly will have his reservations. In fact most players outside the club would have major reservations before coming to Melbourne unless they couldn't get a game anywhere else. Losing has a stigma and it's going to take quite a while to wash that stigma away permanently.

He was a good player in great team, never thought of him as a great player. The end comes around quickly these days, He will be Thirty (30) BEFORE the year starts and would require a trade and a reasonable pay packet. He is slowing down, He has one (1) - two (2) years left MAX - help for the next ten years - nonsense.

He is not quite good enough to even take the main tag from Nathan JONES. I'm still not convinced. And you didn't win me over with your witty insults. Still think CROSS as a free agent with no huge salary - fair enough. Costly trade / high salary - SEWELL too much risk. Premiership medals and TV contracts won't get the job done in our team

Jeez, the three-week trade period has been going for two days.

Come back on October 25 and then complain about the result. And even then, if we don't get someone, it'll be for a good reason.

Players don't see us as a viable option, we are not a desired destination and I can understand that.

We may pick up some players but it's my view that we will miss out on the main targets; hope I'm wrong but I doubt it. My bet; we will use pick 2 in the ND.

Perhaps you didn't read closely, but the "next 10 years" comment was relating to the young midfielders who would benefit from his example/mentoring.

As for the "witty insults"... not sure what you are talking about there... if it was the Gen-Y thing, then perhaps you need to grow a thicker skin as it was patently obvious that it was not a serious comment, and more particularly, was a general comment that was directed at no one poster in particular.

Personally I think Sewell has more left in him than Cross. Probably both great leaders. Neither can hit the side of a barn with their kicking. I'd lean towards Sewell because he could make an impact at the clearances. Cross would probably just be a bit spare parts and not even see out the year like Rodan. Happy to pay Sewell any $$$ he wants but not happy to give too much in a trade for a 30 year old.

I can't understand anyone saying no to Sewell. He's just won his second premiership at the Hawks and despite being dropped earlier in the year, was an integral part of their flag success. If Hawthorn was asking for the #2 pick, alright, but he will come relatively cheaply.

And of course we could play Sewell and Cross in the same midfield. FFS, have people already forgotten about how rubbish our midfield was this year? Jones, Viney, Sewell, Cross, Toumpas, Trengove and Grimes is at least competitive. Add Aish or an upcoming mid that we trade for pick #2 and we might be watchable next year.

Get some real grunt into the middle and I think that offers the opportunity to release Grimes back to the HBF where i think hes better suited and possibly Dimitri to the other side.

Cant see the reasons for angst either . Its a very similar model that many successful clubs use albeit the players we're looking at are obviously a couple of years older, but the idea is similar. Strengthen your core and get the team moving in the 'right ' direction and develop under this.

If we are to take one of Chappy, Cross or Sewell I would take Sewell instantly. He has monstered us over the past 5-6 years with his big body and aggressive attack on the contest - he would be an instant lift to our midfield stocks and he is an influence player. Others around him lift because of the way he plays. If he is available - go get him MFC.

If we do land Sewell, and a fringe midfielder like Vichi from Freo or Greenwood from NM, then keep pick 2 and use it on Aish or Scharenberg.

Can you imagine the stoppages with N Jones, Viney and Sewell going at it? Is that the sound of hope I hear????

Would change our effectiveness remarkably, and very very quickly. I think this is the type of thing that dare i suggest BH refers to when commenting that we could move away from our past paltry efforts and actually start up the ladder and do so with a greatly expedited timetable as compared to some's thinking.

If I was Brad Sewell and used to big games and quality teammates the last place I'd want to finish my career would be the MFC. I'd believe that i still had some good footy left and would try and position myself to go to a club that had a window to win a flag. I'd doubt that the MFC and its lot would get my competitive juices flowing. So with that in mind I doubt he'd come.

That said, I'm underwhelmed at the prospect. Footy is catching up to Brad Sewell pretty quickly and I'd like some longer term vision in my plans. For the same reasons I'm not that fussed on Cross either, but i see a better fit.

No thanks.

Viv Michie interests me far more than Sewell.

I agree with your first part BH but not so much your second. Sewell is very good at the bottom of the packs and can be pretty creative with his use of the ball. He would easily be a best 22 player for us next year the question is really how long would he last?

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
