Where is it coming from?

Is that rhetorical?

I think he is Band 3 as Pearce and Chaplin before him.

Band 3 is the pick behind out 2nd round pick. About 24 when pushed out by other comp picks.

That is where it is coming from.

You can tell me it BS but don't tell me you don't know the logic.

The logic is sound, the answer awaits.

you think...stop there...You DONT know

Arguments can be made for a variety of outcomes but only one counts....the whim of the AFL...and they really have our back dont they.

you know nothing...you are assuming..

edit

Not having a go per se but whilst the arguments all look good , there has been shown little rhyme or reason in past rulings by Vlad Inc. i.e no consistency. I would put it that many(here ) place far more value in Col than the market and the AFL actually do. He was a cheap pick up by Freo, thats the reality of it.

I fear Band 4 compo will be the case. My reasons are that B&F results and old and new contract size come into play. As we know Colin has a pretty woeful record in club B&Fs, he obviously wasn't on a massive contract if he was an unrestricted free agent (i.e. he would have been restricted if he was in the top handful of earners at the club), and lastly, he didn't leave for Freo because of a big contract offer, he left to chase premierships and finals footy, meaning he signed for similar, perhaps even less money.

But anyway, we will see. Hopefully Band 3.

You can think its Band 4, Band 5, Little River Band, Band-aid... I don't care.

But don't give me the rhetorical flourish "I don't know we're that is coming from" - I have been boring this site for a year about 'where it is coming from.'

RPFC by any other logic it can be shown that the AFL has scant regard for precedent... if they had...we'd have a PP right now. We dont

I am really sorry to correct you here but Colin was an UFA because he has 'played' at MFC for 10 years. 2004 was his first year.

The top 10 earners rule applies to players OOC after 8 or 9 years and are not in the top 10 earners at the club; they are UFA.

Sylvia was most definitely very well paid at Melbourne.

It's all a about equalization.

Look at the hawks for example.

We will get a good pick for Sylvia. He was as important to us as buddy was to the dorks.

Posted

its about the onward contract value for compo...not what anyone WAS on.

Whilst he(cs) was undoubtedly in the top25% pay at Melbourne he achieved little really in the Bluey and goes on to a mediocre contract at Freo. Not that much to crow about etc.

I think many will be disappointed. It may well be why some trades have stalled. Clubs waiting to see what the REAL outcomes of compos are before dealing.. you'd be mad not to.

I can't help but think there is bigger things happening with Frawley..... If he does end up as part of a mega trade I hope we don't get shafted. If he doesn't get traded we'll know his further intentions soon enough if he mutters the words 'I'll make my decision at the end of the season'.

I'd rather trade Frawley now rather than he leave next year for free agency and we get less compensation.

And there's always the fact that on the day of Sylvia's departure Mahoney said the club expects band 2 or 3 compensation.

Roos was pretty certain we were up for a PP.. Funny how it doesnt always pan out .

Alleged 700k a year for Shaw? What a waste of coin.

How's this idea? Let's throw big paper at Callan Ward.....surely he'd be a tad annoyed at the figures being touted?

Do you somehow forget that Ward also went to GWS as a FA for big coin?

I doubt Ward could care less what Shaw is on, let alone being annoyed.

Was he?

He publicly pushed the issue, but only when journos brought it up themselves.

Anyway, I fail to see the same logical deductions from rpfc's argument, in the reasoning for those who think we'll receive band 4 or worse.

FCS, B&F finishes have been used as a supporting argument.

Are you guys aware he finished 5th this year in the B&F??

Contract is for 3 years.

The only basis I can see Sylvia getting lower than band 3, is based on money, since we don't know what that is.

But I'd be willing to bet Sylvia is still making sure he gets his coin.

That's not the point. I was merely helping explain where the band 3 expectations are "coming from". They're coming from our own club.

Col has gone chasing glory. 3 years on similar coin to what we were paying/ prepared to pay. He hasnt gone for a fortune. Has low achievements to support a good case on compo. Band 3 will be luxurious. Wouldn t count on it though

Sorry machsy but you've got it wrong there. I don't suffer from the above or any form of mfcss. I'm level headed and see things as they are.

Thanks for the assumption though.....

I'll give you one simple (just for you) example. Brian Lake has 1-2 years left at best. Buddy Franklin's departure leaves heaps of cap space for the next two years. (Stay with me machsy, focus!) Lake retires. Frawley out of contract and is offered overs because he can do what Lake just did last month for the Hawks and get a medallion (or two) to boot.

You would have to be a goose if you think that 'one' example is not reasonably likely.

Don't be late for school...

I hear what you're saying about the categorisation of our compensation at Band 3 rather than Band 4 but I'm not convinced about one aspect. I seem to recall that the two players who left Port Adelaide were both put on 4 year contracts rather than the 3 year contract which Sylvia is getting. Hence, a possible difference in the compensation we might be given for Sylvia as compared with that for the Port pair. Does that make sense?

History seems to support the notion that when a player leaves to gain a better contract, longer and higher remunerations then the compo is better favoured. When they just leave , which is essentially the case with Sylvia...it doesnt seem to favour the club left quite as well.

However it is believed that Thomas (4 year contract) is going to have better compensation than Franklin (9 year contract).

Given Sylvia's age, previous contract, and contract at Freo - I'm hoping for Band 3 but might be Band 4.

I think an aspect to this that some of us are suggesting needs be applied when considering all this and thus tempering expectations is that theres little if any real consistency to this compo lark

At the footy late in the year, It was a stock standard home game over by half time garbage footy so I took up my position at the bar. The conversation was all the trade period and free agency. A bloke joined in the conversation he stated Sylvia will be gone as a free agent and we will not get a priority pick but we will be over compensated for Sylvia. I think if you work through the AFL Free agent compensation Sylvia will be Band 4, we might get band 3 because we missed out on the priority pick, the same blokes that submitted on the priority pick decided on the level of compensation for free agents.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
