One thing the MFC offers a young ambitious player who has already won a flag, is a challenge.

A challenge is a valuable offer to an ambitious player.

Interesting looking at another website who has gone at pick 2 the last 10 years! Hodge, Cotchin, Coniligio, H Bennell, Naitanui, Trengrove, Gumbleton, Dale Thomas, Roughead, A Walker. A handy group! So do we really want to trade pick 2?

Hodge was Pick 1, Luke Ball went pick 2 in that 2001 "superdraft" with Judd at 3.

Yes they are a handy group (your list), although I ask would you trade pick 2 for Coniglio or O'Rourke? Are they worthy? Because at this point in time that is its true worth (the associated unknown and only potential).

There is a good chance of obtaining a Cotchin or Thomas like player or one might slide to pick 6,7, or 8 like a Wingard, Wines, or Bartel. Alternatively there is a chance we could get a flop like a Gumbleton, a Morton, or Tambling and unfortunately this year there is no one midfielder that is well and truly ahead of the pack to make that Cotchin or Thomas like selection easier. It's looking like a 50/50 choice between Kelly and Aish, although its hard to split that overall pack of players.

I'm sure one or possibly two will develop into a star over time, although I'm also sure one or possible two will play out their career in second gear with every fan riding it on the hope from initial potential.

Add to that the fact that the club really stood by him and looked after him when his sister passed away. Luke came out and said last year (?) that he would never leave the club after everything they did for him at that time and there is every reason to believe him.

Some people just like to ignore facts I guess.

And the facts are that 8 weeks ago Paul Roos wasnt interested in coaching next year - yup - that was a fact too !

Whilst all the indicators are pointing to him going nowhere by all the noises made, if Eagles turned around and said they wanted our pick two and he was available and we offered him twice as much as he on now?

The fact is you keep pushing for anything and everything you want ( as we did with Roos) and rule out nothing. As we have found out with our coach, no doesnt necessarily mean no. Keep dangling the "no 2 bait" and if we get one we want on the hook, let the other nibblers know who also may want that the pick that it is going going and now is the time to put up or shut up. Then no will mean no.

Name me one player that has gone to a club that is by any measure way off the pace for a challenge ?

Players will come to us

1/ Because they are not getting a good go at their current club

2/ Because they are in their twilight and either wont be getting a go at another club or have tasted the ultimate glory so going somewhere for a premiership crack is not as important

3/ For truckloads of money.

The challenge of playing for us would have zero appeal.

Edit - i noted you said "that had already won a premiership" - the likes of Hannebery would come for the biggggg $$$$$$$

One thing floating pick 2 does is chum the waters. We say pick 2 is on the market, clubs don't offer true value players but do suggest players that don't warrant it and tip their hand. This could be useful with pick 20 to the fore. We can start a negotiation with the player - try to get them keen enough to come across, that's step 1. Then step 2: "Luke, they were falling over themselves to ditch you for pick 2."
