The Trade/Draft Rumour Mill

I'm just sitting at the departure gate heading to Perth, Dean Kent is on the flight. I said he had a good year - he is a nice young bloke.

So on the way out of Perth airport I said "enjoy your break mate, I look forward to seeing you kick a few more again next year", I believe his mother had come to pick him up who was with him, he replied in a very nice manner with a "thanks mate".

This is not really a source but a mate of mine did see nick dal santo at ammi park yesterday coming from Melbourne doors with a smile on his face. Was pretty surprised to hear thag

Probably walked in mid skills session, that would be bring a smile to anyone's face outside the MFC

He is being courted by the Melbourne Rebels as a replacement for James O'Connor.

That's what this thread is all about - great stuff!

Would take pick 2.

Well this is the trade rumour mill but I don't hear pick 2 being given for that. At the moment I hear Pick 2 Adel for R Sloane, Pick 20 (or is it 19?) + ruckman to GWS for Taylor adams. If they can fit Rockliff in as well somehow, roll on Round 1!

Revisionism here is comical.

Prendergast didn't have issues with Rockliff - he just rated Jurrah higher.

We were set to take him with pick 1 in the rookie draft if he lasted through the PSD, after he had impressed when training with us following the ND.

Rockliff was taken with the 2nd last pick of the PSD.

There was a lot of talent in that rookie draft - Mike Pyke, Suckling, De Boer, Sam Jacobs, Broughton, Clancee Pearce, Luke Breust, Liam Picken, Tom Simpkin, Jarryd Blair, Luke Delaney, Zac Dawson, Ricky Henderson, Robin Nahas, Jeff Garlett, Jordie McKenzie, and of course Casey Sibosado.

Anyway, BH has a good recollection of Rockliff.

He was played at FF for the majority of the season, and topped the TAC Cup goalkicking, in the Murray Bushrangers GF winning side.

Was overshadowed by Sidebottom in the GF.

Again, the problem with Rockliff was where he would play.

Didn't really have the athleticism or size to dominate as a KPF at AFL level.

He just had an innate ability to win the footy, and then use it well.

I remember well, because I myself couldn't see how Rockliff's clear ability to make things happen, would translate to AFL.

He seemed too much of a tweener, and in the end he was, but had what it took to reinvent himself when given a chance.

Much like Cameron Ling before him, Rockliff was drafted as a FF with poor fitness, and it was his determination and work ethic that saw him eventually develop the tank to be a top line AFL midfielder.

I'd love him, but I worry pick 2 would be a bit too much.

We'd want a pick back in return.

Love the idea of getting him though.

Of course there isnt

This whole thread is filled with made up crap, as it is at every time this season

I can tell you right now that the rockliff rumour I put in this thread is not made up, i see no reason to put made up rumours on here, but like I said take from it what you like and keep the critisism to yourself

Personally I'm hoping Roos sees Terlich's hardness and agility in traffic as aspects of his game which will see him play in the middle. I said it during the season and I'll say it again, I think Terlich could become a pretty solid midfielder, playing a role

Terlich would be a solid midfielder at best and we need more than that.

He is a terrific back man and would never reach those heights in the midfield.

We need more than solid midfielder, we need absolute ruthlessness - or another Jack Viney!

Crouch would fit that bill, but could we instill that ruthlessness into a better skilled draftee - that is the question!

Salem would definitely fit the mould if he slipped to 20.

Terlich is a back man and if it ain't broke, then you know what they say.

I'd rather a solid midfielder to add to our one midfielder, than no other midfielders which is what we have.

Not every player has to be a gun. If Terlich could play a role in the middle and rotate through the backline, that would be great.

It's been rumored that kids want out of Brissy - Leppitsch even voiced his concern immediately after being appointed, that his first move would be to prevent the walk out.

Then there is the rumored falling out between Voss and Rockcliff.

So you are probably on the money... Rockcliff is impressive, he'd be definitely worth pick 2, without hesitation, hearing him speak in interviews - he knows his football.

That is what Grimes tries to do.

Jack Grimes has more strings to his bow as a midfielder than Terlich would.

Keep in mind we'll have two midfielders next year with Viney progressing.

Then on top of that there about about 5-6 guys who are worth persisting more with in the midfield than Terlich.

Those players :Trenners, Toumpas, Howe, Jones, Grimes and McKenzie will probably tag most games.

I understand where you are coming from, but maybe you underestimate how important Terlich is down back as well.

If Terlich isn't down back, so we want to see more of Dunn? I don't! And.. I'd rather Terlich running out of the backline than Frawley.

DJ, Nathan Carroll??

Very impressive choice.

Played one good game when he smacked Fraser Gehrig in a final against the Aints.

I watched Rockliff a couple of times in the stingrays sides with an old mate. He said he liked Rockliff, who was playing as a small forward kicking bundles of goals thru the season.

I said to my friend, he's too slow & too short to be a goal kicking small forward. I thought he was limited as a player & suggested he would have to be an in/under mid. but I didn't consider him seriously in that role with his pace, etc compared to other TAC kids playing thru the middle.

One of the mids I liked that year, as a 2ndRnd or 3rdRnd pick was DeBoer, as a hard working inside mid. I got canned for him as well.

its very easy, maybe too easy to discount some kids on early impressions.

Given how bad our mid field is I am not sure why we haven't used Dunne more in the mid field in the past 2 seasons. He has had some success in the past as a run with tagger but we haven't persisted. He did tag Judd this year with some success but then failed to hold

Ablett, not surprisingly.

He has some attributes as a forward and as a half back but why didn't we keep him as a bigger bodied tagger? Just because we had Jordie? At the moment I think he would be a keeper because Roos just might work out a very simple role for him to play that suits his mature body, size and experience, here is hoping.

Am hearing we are also looking at some OS players, Irish, USA etc

Did somebody read you the thread on Demonland entitled 'Big Americans training with Roos at Swans Academy' that began three and a half weeks ago in which the OP states: 'Anyway with Roos having the inside knowledge I wouldn't be surprised to see one of these guys come on to our list as a rookie''?

Optimistic hypothetical, but who would you take if we were in a situation where we offered pick 2 and were offered

Rory Sloane, or Tom Rockcliff or David Swallow

for mine i'd take Tommy Rockcliff, he has captaincy potential, inside outside mid, good skills, the right age to suit our list perfectly.

Rory Sloane would however get serious consideration, toss of the coin between those two really.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
