Reading Julian De Stoop's article today on the fox sports web site, he has asked the question that because over the years it has been a non event due to our sides performance he has suggest that maybe the AFL need to review who plays on the day. He writes the followng

Melbourne v Collingwood "blockbuster"

Due to Melbourne’s woes this game has become a dud in recent years save for one thrilling draw back in 2010. Since that day the Pies have cruised to 83, 42, 66 and 21-point wins. Crowds are dwindling with the Demons last win on the Queen’s Birthday coming in 2007 and maybe it's time the AFL looked at fixturing a different match on this day.

We can all rant and rave about how bad or good Neeld's coaching style is! its Baileys fault he left it a basket case! the useless and incompetent board.

This is our big money maker, if we did lose this we would never be rewarded with an occasion like this again.

There is a great possibility that if we do not become more competitive we will be axed.... It's a very scary thought on where that would leave us financially!

The fixture should be fairer to all clubs on a week-week basis.

I would gladly give up our 'Grand Final' (ugh) if ANZAC Day was spilled and every other bloody 'event' game and Friday and Sat night games were shared around.

Also, if you want to solve the clubs issues through fixturing - play 4 games at a 25k seater Casey Stadium a season. We would make $2m.

We don't deserve it anymore. I think many blockbuster matches should be rotated or more intelligently scheduled. Give Hawthorn v Geelong something; they never disappoint.

Anzac Day match should be the premiers from the year before.

Whatever happens the random timeslots (320?!? When did that become a game time) are really putting me off watching neutral games.

it's not about whether we 'deserve' it or not. We didn't 'earn' Queen's Birthday originally, and its existence is not about whether Melbourne or Collingwood 'deserve' it.

It's a fixture with its roots in history.

If the AFL wants to change it up because Melbourne's underperforming, then consistency would dictate that when Collingwood/Essendon have a bad year, they don't get ANZAC Day. When Carlton is crap, they shouldn't get two games a year against Collingwood.

The AFL shafts Melbourne already with its fixturing. Leaving QBD for us is no real problem to anyone, and I guarantee you that the AFL is more interested in increasing the number of blockbusters than maintaining the number and rotating clubs through them.

You could have said the same thing about Richmond Carlton over the years r1. Richmond were hopeless.

Gary Pert was on mmm yesterday and spoke how important it is to us to have it and Collingwood will keep on supporting us to have this game.

When the time comes and we are good again the crowds will come back. 50,000 was pretty good yesterday even though most of them would had been collingwood fans.

We are an easy target for everything at the moment. Other people questioned this game yesterday as well.

While I appreciate the revenue side of it, one must ask what it does to our psyche. It s***s me when Eddie condescends us and goes on about how it's our grand final but he is right. We cluck away like geese while Collingwood treat it like another match really. This rivalry we have with them is one sided. We talk about the old enemy and how much we hate them and they don't give a toss about us.

While I like the revenue it gives us, I can also look at it from the point of view that we lose it, we can simply play Collingwood on our merits, not as a part of a pumped up tradition.

God I wish that could happen. It would be fantastic to have our own ground (one we could fill) and base and something like that could save the club financially and set it up for a long time yet.

If we were ever going to do that (and I don't for one second think it will ever happen) we may as well just play games at Geelong. Would take me just as long to get there and back as it would to go to Casey (in fact Geelong may even be closer).

I'm sure there'd be a lot of people around Casey and the eastern suburbs happy to go though. Only a few games there as rpfc pointed out would be a huge benefit financially. As well as 4 home games there, 5 home and 5 away at the G (home games against large Vic sides) and the rest interstate, we'd be laughing.

If you have a 25k stadium no matter where it's located, you need 30k regularly trying to get in. Geelong make a huge quid at their patch because demand exceeds supply. So if you want to be sure to get in, you pay the extra - reserved seating etc.

Playng GWS at Casey ? You'd be lucky to get a better crowd than they do on their dunghill.

Having PJ, who in his own right is a proven football administrator, in no way guarantees a rise out of this mess. You'll find alot of the problems are at board room level above PJ's head.

Stoop has obviously conveniently omitted the Pies 1 point win in 2010 when he suggested that the Pies have "cruised" to four Queen's Birthday wins in the next three years, quite an acheivment in arithmetic even for the Queen to have four birthdays in three years! Although there is nothing creditable in getting beaten by the Pies, he is also drawing a long bow to suggest a 21 point win is 'cruising'! Our close rivalry in the fifties and sixties (in my lifetime) is good enough reason to continue the tradition through to our next "Golden Era"!

Another well credentialed journalist (and I use journalist very, very loosely) writing a balanced, informed piece on a club down on its knees. I wonder if he wrote about Matt jones and his rise from suburban footballer to afl midfielder, or dean terlich making the most of his second chance on an afl list, or Nate jones improving and carrying a young midfield and playing at a very high level week in week out. Or even mentioning that casey are top of the ladder with a host of young demon players really improving and showing the future may not stay dark for as long as some people think. But alas, it's another "sky is falling in" article to keep sponsors and the common supporter thinking that the MFC are stuffed. He could also have mentioned our home games against low drawing clubs on low drawing times lots impacting on attendance.

Mondays game started at 3.20. Can anyone answer why? After a long weekend, kids have school Tuesday and the game doesn't finish til 6, traffic means families don't get back until 7, 7.30. Country members don't get home for another hour or 2 after that. All factors on top of poor form. That game should start at 2.10 in my opinion.

It is ridiculous the game starts at 3.20pm - it is so channel 7 can show it live and leading into the news. Seriously who gives a stuff about the news anyway? Is it really that big a deal these days? Who the hell watches commercial TV news anyway?
