Name any players Neeld has improved.

Recommended Posts

I challenge anyone to name a player on the list who has improved directly as result of Neelds coaching.

This does not include players Neeld has brought to the club such as Matt Jones. Matt Jones can play but it cannot be said Neeld has made him a better player. Neeld has provided some new guys with opportunities but that does not mean his coaching has improved their ability.

On the flip side how many players have gone backwards under Neeld?

Garland, Sylvia, Davey, Howe?

Davey has gotten back to the required fitness, not improved as a player. I'd give that win to mission, not Neeld.

I'd say the only player to improve under Neeld is Nathan Jones

Another anti-Neeld thread where people will blame MN for every bad player that was drafted before him and players that haven't improved, then not give him any credit for good players that he drafted and players that have improved.

Getting very boring.

Watts. He's not where we want him to be or as good yet as we'd hoped, but he's a lot better than before Neeld started. Whether he would have been anyway through natural growth is a moot point, though. Ditto Blease.

And I'll agree on Garland, Sylvia, Howe and McDonald. And N Jones.

And clearly Neeld thinks Dunn is better because he plays him regulalry, although personally, I can't see it.

reason for edit: Forgot N Jones

Easy

Garland

Grimes

Nathan Jones

Davey

Clarke (He was a bit player at Brisbane)

Some long bows being drawn here

Garland - has been a good player for a while. I think he's physically stronger but not necessarilt better than when he was stitching up the likes of Buddy a couple of years ago

Grimes - maybe. Or maybe because up until this latest injury, it was the first time in his career he got to put a run of games together

Jones - every year Jones has improved an aspect of his game. Not quantum leaps but noticeable inprovement. He was on target to win the Brownlow at the age of 42. Whether he's improved under Neeld or whether he's playing in the right position (what was that year on the wing about ?) and contining his steady upward curve is debateable

Davey - uninjured & something like fit for the first time in years. Not sure that's down to Neeld

Clark - bit players don't make the AA squad which Clark did at Brisbane

Watts had what was arguably his best season last year under Neeld and is finally starting to show a little hardness this year, Grimes has improved, Jones continues to improve, Frawley and Davey have been rediscovering their respective mojos, Garland is playing the best and most consistent football o0f his career, Howe is starting to really develop as a player as Neeld seems to have been able to convince him to temper his inclination to always go for the speccy (sp?) and Sylvia is showing consistency and applying himself much more than he has ever done in the past.

As Bedraggled Dee mention, Clark has found marked improvement on what he was for the most part at Brisbane (he has been given the chance to play in his best position) and the same could be said for Dawes who has already shown marked improvement on what he was offering at the Pies last season.

Now, how about you name a few players that have genuinely gone backwards under Neeld, Mongel Dee.

Frawley and Clark are previous AA's - or squad. They don't qualify, but I'll be fair and give you Clark.

Let's throw in Garland, Howe, McDonald, and Jones. You can't have Sylvia, because there's been no marked improvement. I wouldn't give you Jones and Garland either, because they've both previously shown they can play and the have the amount of games under them now where improvement is expected. It should be a given. But I'll let you have them anyway. I'm that kind of guy.

That's 5 players, i.e. about 15%. Wowee. How are the other 85% traveling ?

Nathan Jones : gone from 2 grab player to strong in & under midfielder

Watts : toughened up Effort in 1on 3's yesterday were good

Evans : Patience with unjury

McDonald: WIP

Garland : has developed real passion.

Frawley : Has not really lowered his colours this year despite .....

Dawes : has changed the way he plays under MN. Giving us a target instead of being a decoy. Plus Leadership

Howe : is becoming a fwd/midfielder. Disposal/Kicking for goal has improved

Grimes : at least he is on the park (sometimes). Born Leader.

Changing roles : Blease, Tapscott,Jetta,Strauss,Dunne

Good Newies : Terlach,Matt J

WIP : VIney,Toumpas,Gawn,Fitzpatrick

Backwards :1 Players still demanding the ball when standing still.

2 Players giving it to them

4 Not covering opposition running past them.

Granted it is not a large number, but the OPs original request was not about numbers as much as about the fact he believes not a single player has improved.

The inference to be taken from the OP is that players are going backwards under Neeld which is why I named Garland and Jones, because they continue to improve. Sylvia's improvement is in his attitude, which is something that can be attributed to Neeld. Also, as I understand it from other posts on these forums, Casey are applying Neeld's methods as well (is this correct?) and they seem to be on an upward trend.

So BH, do you care to name any that have gone backwards as a direct result of Neeld's coaching?

This question is clearly a trap. My money says this will end in a "ner ner, you don't know it was Neeld's coaching" sort of post.

Not sure about that, given that the OP actually posed the question (not sure if it was rhetorical though):

" On the flip side how many players have gone backwards under Neeld?"

The setting up of the thread seems to suggest that the OP doubts that any players have progressed positively since Neeld took over while suggesting that there are more that have gone backwards than have improved. I see no problem in asking the OP to actually list those players they are thinking about. If there's no proof then, then the OP shouldn't have made a vexatious statement.

I can assure you Nasher that that was definitely not the intent... it was actually a genuine question. I have tried to think of players that may have gone backwards as a result of Neeld's influence, but honestly cannot think of any.

If we notice one thing about Neeld, it would be that he got rid of the players who did not want to improve, who were werent in long term plans. Sure this may bring more short term pain, but guys like N.Jones,Grimes,Garland have really stood up and thats why Neeld gave them leadership roles, he knew they were decent players. Under Bailey i would not have said Jones was our best mid or Garland was near AA. add to that:

M.Jones- He drafted

Terlich- He drafted

Kent- He drafted

Toumpas- He drafted and gave a contract extension too

Viney- He drafted

Clisby- He drafted

and suddenly our drafting doesn't look to bad at all.

Then there are guys like....

Howe,Mcdonald,Trengove,Gawn and Blease who have bought in and really as young players, have stood up.

I really could not see what Neeld was doing early in his coaching career but, if you look at the stance he has taken, and how much certain players have improved, I actually think he has the makings of a decent coach.

You can say all you like about Gillies,Rodan, Pederson and Byrnes... But Byrnes is best 22... Rodan has actually been playing OK footy, same with Pederson and anyone at the start of the season would have taken Gillies.

The players that left... Gysberts... hasn't played a game.... Moloney... very much a one way player.... Pettard... very skilled needed a new start.... Morton.... hasnt played a game...... Cook... No one picked up...... etc. these were not his drafting calls and Neeld knows what he wants and how he wants to get there.

So I feel he should have the whole support of the club. Whilst he is coach and whilst he is shielding our players from a raft of media barrages, he deserves our respect.

I think it's been well and truly answered, but lets go anyway.

Improved:

Garland

Jones

Sylvia

Davey

Jetta

Blease

Watts

Evans

Fitzpatrick

Gawn

Howe

Strauss

Spencer

Stagnated:

McKenzie

Nicholson

Dunn

Frawley

Magner

Couch

Worsened:

Jamar

Unknown:

Davis

Tynan

Taggert

I'm no doubt missing some, but that's the ones that come to mind immediately. I have not included the players who have been added to the side this year since they don't have any existing form with us to compare.

Spencer - they are trying to get him to be more of a force up forward - kicked 3 at the weekend - Improved

Couch - came from park football, teaching him to be more well rounded, only a rookie but improving all the time 41 touches, couple of goals

Davis - great one on one defender but you also need to know how to attack, 28 disposals at the weekend, been shining light for consistency

So every player other than Jamar is either as good or better than they were before, yet we're losing more often and by more? Justify this, please.

Jones was always a good gutsy player, he's just matured, Neeld has not improved anyone, they've gone backwards

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
