Kennett future MelbourneFC President?

I just don't understand the vitriol directed at "silvertails" and "private school boys". And before anyone gets on some preconceived hobby-horse, no I am not one of them. Who gives a rat's tossbag what a person's roots are?

Can they do the job?

Can he/she lead?

Do they have business acumen?

Can they cast vision and formulate strategy?

Can they inspire a club to dream big and go for it?

I don't care if they hail from Brighton Grammar or Hampton Park Secondary College - CAN THEY DO THE JOB???

Despite what I have been saying, I agree with you. It's just when your management ONLY come from a particular background that questions need to be asked. We have had a history of WASPs running this club with a few exceptions here and there. Where has this led us?

Maldon, with Jeff it isn't about which school he came from... it's political and thus more about which schools he closed as Premier, and his self aggrandising bullying style of management and him generally having a history of being a [censored].

lol I don't think I could have put it better myself. Though I don't think the school stuff is relevant, your turn of phrase there was spot on.

Agree - he is a [censored].

But he is a successful [censored]. Yes, it is success in some ways and horrible failures in others. And I don't want success at ANY price.

Ian Dicker may have done a great job but the Hawks would not have won a flag without Jeff's leadership.

He achieves results. I want some results. I want a flag.

I will admit there are probably better candidates than Jeff - but he is the best to present so far.

Firstly, I'll please myself.

Secondly, I note you didn't make that suggestion to others. My comment was merely a response to political comments already posted. I always find hypocrisy amusing.

I may have missed some posts, but the ones I saw where people didn't like Kennett for political reasons, were arguing how his political background wouldn't be good for the MFC. I have no opinion on that.

But you just started to carry on about how the nation was going down the drain because of the Federal govt - nothing to do with footy.

So sure, please yourself, and I'll please myself to continue to ask you to stick to footy.

We take coaches who played for other clubs, coached other clubs and the same with players.

And these guys are doing it for money and we dont question their loyalty.

That Kennett would put his hand up to take this position which is unpaid speaks volume.

I think you can question what he would do and wouldnt do and thats fine.

You can question whether you like his style or not and debate his past successes and failures but the fact that he is a Hawks supporter is a furphy for mine. To put your hand up as he has for an unpaid role as this leads me to believe that he would give 100% and do what he believes is in the best interest of the club.

A stretch to lay any credit for the Hawks 2008 flag at Jeffs feet. Reckon the Hawks masseuse played a bigger role.

Though I'm sure Jeff took any and all credit he could for "making it happen".

And as a far more amusing Pollie once said "a souffle does't rise twice" :-)

Ahhh, I've worked it out. In the best traditions of Wall Street - the movie - it is a surreptitious hostile takeover bid.

He's a defanged former Premier trying to eek out more retirement time in the minor celebrity limelight, and he's used up his welcome at the Hawks...

This thread explains exactly why a divisive figure like Jeff would be toxin for this club at this time. Would simply disenfranchise yet another segment of the MFC supporter base, further weakening us...

Ah if Demon fans can handle the division caused by one Mark Neeld, I'm sure we can handle Kennett.

Don't you get that we have had enough people who are of 'good character' and they don't seem to get a whole lot done? Give me a guy who is a blustering, loudly spoken bully, he gets what he wants and he gets stuff done. If he is after glory by trying to resurrect us, good on him, it benefits us too.

There is a simple and possible cure for Neeld's divisiveness, winning footy games.

With Jeff, there'd be no cure, just division.

I'd back us to win more games with Kennett at the helm than McLardy mate.

Passion for the club is the critical element in most of the recently successful AFL club presidents (with a couple of exceptions).

I'd prefer G Lyon took up the mantle and emulated his buddies Stynes, Eddie and Brayshaw.

A question, what would Jeff Kennett be seeking to get out of running a club he's never has an interest in, and recently advocated be merged with North?

I'd say it is mostly self interest, which lines up with his personality. However, that doesn't mean at all that he won't be good for the club. He is a successful person and a strong personality and as I said earlier, this is what we need.

What we need is a level-headed person with good business acumen, passionate about our footy club, who doesn't seek a headline for headlines' sake and whose vision for the future and long term viability of the club is crystal clear. We have been enough of a circus, we don't need P.T Barnum running the club thank you very much.

Agree we need a new dynamic on the MFC board, and with that a new President. But to be a successful club we need to forge our own President from our own players, supporters and history. While I don't like Jeff I would also object if people were proposing to draft in Cook or Kernahan for President.

Footy is tribal and I believe if you allow the club to be run by outsiders with no real attachment to the Club you are on the slippery slope to "who gives a [censored]".

Look, that sounds really great and I'd support someone like that but where are we going to pull them from? There aren't exactly guys lining up for the job.

Yes, of course it's grasping at straws. He only saved a financially crippled state that was the laughing stock of the nation and had a terrible credit rating. And he only helped grow Hawthorn into one of the powerhouses on the back of Dicker's excellent work and ended up presiding over a premiership.

The President is there to oversee strategies and corporate governance, not necessarily to be a flag waving supporter. Although I don't think it would take long for Jeff to buy in and show a contorted face in the stand after an agonising loss. Those were the days - an agonising loss. I look forward to when we get close to one.

You are kidding yourself about this muppet, the only thing he did was sell the farm and any muppet could have done that, he sold a public utilities that gave the government hundreds of millions of dollars a year was one of the biggest hirers of apprentices and sold that for a pittance and told everyone how much cheaper it would be well guess what we have all been screwed over, would not let this clown anywhere near our club!!

I'm absolutely all for it. He's quoted as saying he wants to and I reckon it would be fantastic. The current longest serving Sydney President was once the President of West Coast. I don't care who he barracks for now, whether you love him, or loathe him he has a history of success in the face of difficult circumstances.

It would be brilliant for this club.

i was just about to ask how many have been president of more than one club

One Government bankrupts the state, so the next Government is forced to make tough and unpopular decisions. Little wonder there's some that bleat and moan.

Blame the Greens and Labor's desal plant for your cost of living, smart guy.

How funny. You have no problem with the Government that bankrupted the state, but are critical of the one that dragged it up again. There should be a tax on stupidity.

I won't respond further. Stick to the footy.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
