We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

GWS will go hard at 'quality' players at the end of this year, according to Sheepy.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/gws-going-hard-at-quality-players-20130505-2j1gd.html

How bout we trade Jamar for a pick around 14-18 mark to use on a ready-to-go, hard, young mid? Will Billings be gone by then?

I reckon we will be right there with them, we will have oodles of cash available in the cap.

Any player who wins there own footy should be drafted. If we were a good team we could look at outside mids with exceptional skills but as we have all seen we can't get the footy.

The way i see it, we are still in need of another quality KPD to help Frawley, Ruckman to help Gawn and need oodles of good mids.

Since the midfield is our most glaring weakness, it must be addressed first. Aside from N. Jones and Viney, we have nothing else for good inside mids. we need to bring n more inside grunt. Dunstan is the one we need to target and pick.

If we can upgrade our 2nd round pick or trade a few players to get ourselves back into the first round, another mid is the way to go. We also get hurt on the spread, so we need outside run as well, maybe someone like a Jared Polec from the Lions.

But as for the draft, Dunstan is our man at this early stage.

Let's not do this to ourselves. Looking to the draft is what got us into this position in the first place.

Which of the many 'positions' are you talking about Chook? (note to BBO: missionary is not one of them). If you are referring to the T word, no one is talking of that on this thread.

Except for snaring a mature gun midfielder or two through a trade or FA, we will have to draft and develop, draft and develop, etc. (though we've been crapolla at this so far). Its the way we will have to build our list

The season is only just one quarter over and there are forty players on our list; let's look at them before placing unfounded faith in kids we don't even have.

I haven't even talked about young Hogan yet because we've been burned in the past by hoping that some kid is going to walk in and shake up a horribly dysfunctional organisation. Build from within, not from without.

I love reading the bio's of the draftees's - its like Danos direct - the advertising on TV looks so good but the reality aint so good - not just for us but for everyone - have a look back over the bio's for Scullys draft - a whole lot of underperformers there

Man I am sick of the fact that the part of the season MFC supporters get most excited about is the draft. I enjoy the analysis but the fact that it is round 6 and we are already looking forward to the draft is pretty pathetic.

True, but this what happens when you gpo down by 10+ goals every week. Its not the supporters fault it is the teams. If we performed better we would not even consider the draft until the season was over.

Anyway I am expecting a priority pick, I am expecting 2 of the top 3 picks.

It is funny; "plays like Joel Selwood'. Suddenly everyone expects we've landed the next Selwood, Yeah!!!!!

....but wait he also plays outside, and not only that he kicks goals.

Love your passion Chook, but all clubs and fans at some point look ahead towards future drafts. I too have expressed sadness that we do this earlier than most other clubs, but we are where we are. Not sure anyone here is placing "unfounded faith" in prospects mentioned for this year's draft. That's putting words in mouths. We do, however, have to add some players to our list, that's the rules of the AFL. If we get one or more high picks, we'll use them to further build our club. Building from within AND from drafts.

An eye on what we have now, and an eye on the upcoming talent in the draft.

If we get a priority pick i think we should consider floating one of the picks as bait, see if a club would offer us a quality midfielder

Yep need a quality mid that can slot in and lead/teach our young players (Bartel or Luke Ball type)

Geelong has plenty of experienced mids and one would think they are coming to the end of their successful patch. They have already started to bring in young blokes/draftees and seems to be trying to rebuild whilst experiencing success - they would most likeluy jump at a high draft pick (trade a senior mid). Got to target teams that are going into rebuild and have experienced mids (Geelong and St Kilda)

Whilst watching the Carlton game I got the impression that Carlton no longer think Judd is that valuable (not as a mid anyway). He seems to no longer play as much time in the center and may be look odinary in a Carlton midfield but would look a gun in ours! Would at least be a great leader and teacher for the young draftees (better than Rodan or Byrnes).

At least Judd would offer that much, he certainly wouldn't hurt us in the middle either, as much as he isn't what he was, i doubt he will leave carlton though, but i get what you mean, Dal Santo or Montagna might be worth a crack?

OUT: Rodan, Gillies, Pedersen, Byrnes, Nicholson, Mckenzie, Davey, Davis, Bail, Jamar(traded)

Agree on all except Bail and Jamar. Would throw Sellar and perhaps Strauss in the list to go

I've been watching a bit of WAFL and have seen SHEED but not yet seen ROBERTSON. SHEED disposes of the ball well but is not the type IMO to find his own footy, although he seems to have a natural understanding of running & spreading when his side is in possession. Not really a stand out to me but then again an u/18 playing against men, He's a country boy and does not allow himself to be pushed around. Of all the WA kids I have seen this year Blake Acres playing for West Perth colts has impressed me the most. Plays across half back and runs through the middle, knows how to find his own ball and at AFL level will be a rebound defender who is hard at it.

Late player to pick up Tom Shanahan from East Perth, good solid midfielder who just does the easy thing, had heard a bit about him and went to watch him. First time nothing he did stood out, but then nothing he did resulted in turnover. He is playing in a very ordinary colts side but gets plenty of the ball through the middle very clean with his hands and IMO could be a Sammy Mitchell type. Has not made the cut for WA U/18's so could go under the radar later pick similar to Dean Kent.

I saw a mature age CHB on the weekend playing for the Perth Demons who really impressed me, attacked the contest with confidence and did not give his man any room. Set up attacks off half back in a similar mould to Chip playing rebound defender in 2010. When I checked up when I came home I found he was a Victorian boy recruited from Werribee, Jared RISOL, 22 year old who I will take another look at to make sure it is no flash in the pan.

Of the list provided above only seen video footage and last years TAC Grand Final and like the look of Billings

Great report PSD. Many thanks.

No worries, by the way I believe Shanahan's father spent two seasons on the Pies list late 80's never played for the seniors though I think

Forget anyone over 25yo if you are giving a high pick away, we've made some dumb decisions but that would be right up there.

I would go midfielders with our first three to four picks and then a couple later picks on a small forward.

I believe our backline and forward line have the potential to be great (with exception of a small forward), when our midfield improves the whole team will.

I hate the fact that we will have to wait another few years before this years draftees would have any influence. Its going to be a long road to success - buckle up!

We need to secure one star mid - Free agency or trade. We need a Bartel or Luke Ball type to help and lead with Jones (use priority pick if we get one)

Hate the fact that we are already talking about the draft but we have nothing else to turn too.

Mid's, Mid's and more Mid's please!

Question is should go draftees or 20-22 year olds? If we go draftees it means that players like Jones, Sylivia, Clark and Dawes will be out of their prime by the time the draftees find form.

I'd go for a big bodied power mid, followed by a strong key defender 'Hurley type', & quick smalls.

Getting Crouch or Dunstan would be good. We should chase Dale Thomas under free agency to inject a quality midfielder into the team without sacrificing a high pick for a trade.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
