Lets not kid ourselves here. Scully has done more than Watts so far regardless of what money he is getting. he is infinitely harder at the ball and is good at the clearances. something which watts is a novice at.

Both are different players but Scully is the more natural footballer. watts has greater disposal though.

Scully actually made our team better, Lets not kid ourseleves he was in our best 22, when Scully was on he could really run and carry, which is something we really missed last year. I was filthy at him leaving and still am, if his knee holds up i believe he will be an all-australian. Watts has shown glimpses but no concrete evidence on how good he will be. As the years go bye he's slipping into Colin Sylvia's column of has all the right skills, just doesn't show us enough.......

I beg to differ on both these points. Watts disposal skills are so far in advance of anyone else at the club (and Scully for that matter) its not funny. He will make AA before Scully will.

My AA tip? Watts starts to build a case this year, reinforces in next season and makes AA at the end of 2015. As a mid Scully will have tonnes of opposition for AA spots and may never make it. I hope i'm wtong though, i for one would happy to see him make it to the elite A grade level.

Watts was chosen to become a 600 goal key forward and he now minds pygmies on a half back flank having been dropped to Casey in his 4th year, and Scully has been too small to mix it with the good midfields of the competition, especially at the stoppages where he's easily brushed off the ball; and he doesn't hurt the opposition by foot.

Who has been better - the failed forward, or the disappointing mid ? Scully, but Watts has given more value for money.

Disappointed ? A strong sense of disappointment ? Why would I be "disappointed" ? I'm delighted to pick duds at one. I'm delighted that we manage to avoid drafting the very stars we needed to elevate ourselves back up the ladder for a chance at a flag. I'm delighted we pick a potential gun forward in the Nick Riewoldt mould and 4 years later he's manning Stiffy Johncock, or Sunny Walters on a half-back flank. I'm delighted that GWS get their hands on Jeremy Cameron as the next gun CHF and we get Jack Watts.

Couldn't be happier.

Watts is frustrating because he's been in the system for long enough now, but we have to continue to cut him some slack becasue he has been mismanaged by the club and he's now apparently a backman.

We're quick to defend our young players, sometimes fairly and sometimes blindly.

The very same people that have been cutting Trengove slack for an average 2012 are laughing at Scully for his 2012 form. Scully averaged more posessions per game, more clearances, was more effective with those possesions and same number of tackles. Yes GWS paid too much for him, but he's not rubbish

Watts was recruited 1 year prior to Scully and Trengove. Watts is only 6 months older and he was completing year 12 in his first year therefore he only completed a portion of the training in 2008. I see Watts recruitment a bit like Hogan this year. The club knew Watts would be a year behind his drafting year, dispite the club marketing him in 2009 with fluff games to boost attendance thus income.

Thanks Jose. Funnily enough Hurley may also end up playing most of his footy down back. I suspect a few people would prefer Hurley Watts, particularly in regard to his ferocity. But i'm with you i reckon he is over rated, is a bit slow and one paced and does not have a huge amount of upside.

That's right but how often does a player have a great first year and struggle to back it up after opposition coaches give more time and focus on stopping them having an influence. Also coaches have more intel about strengths and weaknesses.

Yeah, it's not always about other options, because its not like the opposition can just triple team him and let 2 players to free.

Sometimes it's about exposed form, and having enough of it for ther teams to analyse your game and find a way to stop you.

It happens more easily to some players.

I think it happened to Gysberts after his first season.

Opponents realised after time that he didn't have a tank, a burst of speed, strength or aggression.

Before that he had to be respected for what they didn't know about him.

Having said that, I think Cameron might be ok in his 2nd year and beyond.

Its not Watt's fault - the footy department didnt play him early enough or enough times in his first year, played in an unusual position with limited rotations and he was told to fumble.
