Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

10 games.

Dom Barry is a freak and will be out there.

Of the very little footage I viewed of Barry before the draft, I was hoping we landed this kid over anyone.

Was stoked to of got him as steak knives!

Personally I think he'll play a fair bit this year, he is slight on - but has the pace, agility, skills to do damage right away,

looks to have a bit more of a tank than I expected at this stage aswell.

Fyfe was a stick insect when Freo introduced him.. Players with immense skill get by quite well.

Always great to be excited by a new player coming in. I know this has been mentioned before, but in case anyone missed his Combine results:

"Adding to his top-three 3km ranking, Barry was equal ninth in the shuttle run (level 14.2), had a third-best score in the kicking test and was top-10 in the running vertical jump (84cm) and repeat sprints (25.19 seconds)."

But can he put it all together when he's hot and hassled out on the MCG? Still 67 days for him to convince the selection committee.

A poster criticized Barry's fitness base, but as pointed out by Bing, it's a strength. He came 7th in our 3km time trial last week. Combinations of pace, evasiveness and endurance are quite rare.

Also, prior to being drafted in 2008 Stephen Hill's bio read 182 cm and 72 kg. Barry's reads 183 cm and 78 kg. Hill managed to play all 22 games in his debut year. If he's good enough he's big enough.

As supporters we're very much now trying to shy away from over zealous expectations of young players, because we've been burnt in the past, but in reality Barry will play as many games as Neeld/Misson thinks he's capable of. I don't think he'll be put in cotton wool and I reckon we've got a very exciting talent on our hands.

"He's a really nice kid, a top kid actually, and great with his family. I think he is a young Michael Long, very similar playing ability. I rate him as highly as that. I think he has got the capabilities of being something very special." -Scott Welly, former coach in Central Australia

I think that's going to be it, he will play as many as the FD think he is capable of whether that's none or 22.

He is a good runner both endurance and pace wise which will be a real bonus as the game starts to flow a bit more with less packs and interchange as the AFL are working towards.

Would love to see him show something in the NAB cup to push his name up for selection.

If he can realise his potential then this really looks to have been a great draft for the club and the move of picking him up with Hogan will be a master stroke.

I watched his first interview after being recruited and he was absolutely wrapped to be sought out and picked up by the club. If his effort on the field is as enthusiastic as that interview, I reckon he'll be one of the most pleasing to watch of the new youngsters. Team Neeld must really love working with a kid who is so keen and so coachable.

Too many changes? To a team that won 4 games last year? Hmmmmm that must be some of that humour you've been talking about...

stuie, is it impossible for you to have a reasonable discussion with anyone? you seem to just operate in demeaning ways & sarcasm?

I'm not doing anything to you mate, I think maybe the tanking affair is making you paranoid. I made a comment in the exact same spirit as the one's you've told me to "lighten up and have a sens of humour" about, so you need to be able to take what you're happy to be dished out. It wasn't intended in a mean spirit so apologies if it offended you, but if you're gonna preach don't be so eager to be hypocritical.

C'mon Stuie! Your steam rolling this Thread and getting way off topic.

Back To Dom Barry

Apologies about that, I'm sure the mods will delete all that stuff soon...

Anyways... One thing that hasn't been touched on in this thread yet is how awesome it is we have another "brother" in the team. It's been sad times for us lately with Jurrah, Aussie, and Bennell gone for different reasons and Flash not in great form, and I for one am really excited by what I'm hearing about Dom (and Flash for that matter) from training reports.

Some one (I think BH) likened Dom to Bennell in this thread (on the training track). I decided to contain my excitement after that.

Maybe Jason Taylor had some input into the drafting of Dom. I'm sure the only way Neeld would recruit another skinny under sized player is if he trusted the word of the recruiter who was watching him, or knew of him.

5 senior games will be a big win for him. The gap b/w AFL and TAC cap is growing every year. Can't expect a kid to have the physical durability or fitness base to do anything more.

He is skinny as a rake with no prongs but his fitness base is quite high from the sessions I have seen including last week where he was in number 1 group for repeat sprints with the midfield. Blease was in the last group with the ruckmen and talls as a guide.

No-one likened him to Bennell on the training track. Fan said that Bennell was often "training the house down" during the preseason, but that form didn't translate to AFL level. It WASN'T a player "likeness" he was referring to.

I won't contain my excitement when it comes to Barry. I very much like what I see.

You need to stop reading posts like they are an attack BH. I WASN'T referring Barry to Bennell as a player either. I was referring to the point being made that Barry was being reported to be "training the house down" like Bennell had been previously. I'll contain my excitement until the results are shown on game day.

Maybe it was because I confused you to Fan? Its an easy mistake to make.

Firstly, I didn't read it as an attack. Perhaps you can highlight the offending quote, or re-read my post.

Secondly, you said someone "likened Dom to Bennell". That's seems to suggest that you WERE referring Barry to Bennell as a player. I accept that it was a poor choice of words and not your intended meaning.

BH - I share your enthusiasm for Barry and think he will be a player for us in the years to come. However, I have seen different sets of statistics for him which suggests that when drafted he weighed only 65kg. If your information is correct then we might see him in action at the top level sooner rather than later but, on the vision I've seen of him, I would suggest he's still way too light to be considered at this stage.

Happy to be proven wrong though.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
